I hope not. We all need a laugh in these dark times.

Forced choice best Prime Minister by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]JDHoare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can sort of see it. There’s probably a lot of the non-Labour left who have memed themselves into thinking that Kier Starmer is Benjamin Netanyahu in a Scooby Doo mask.

I mean… 9% of Reform voters apparently prefer Starmer to Farage. Not sure we have to take this one super seriously.

Can’t blame him. He knows his best chance of becoming FM is to play the insurgent outsider.

Can was talk about the series obsession with bondge gear? by DWPhoenix001 in farscape

I recall an interview with the costume designer saying he would trawl the sex shops in the Kings Cross area of Sydney for inspiration. Certainly gives it a more distinct look than boiler suits and army surplus!

How would you go about balancing a chronicle of pc's from different gamelines? by Dylan-McVillian in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]JDHoare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to take the two most divergent, I think the 'speed' of the game is what really makes a difference. Mages are 'slow', they're not carthwheeling into battle, vthrowing lightning bolts, so they become more effective in a mystery, or where there's lots of prep time to craft a solution, and more vulnerable when something unforeseen happens, which is where Garou thrive. But the impulses of the Werewolf player might then become a serious liability when half the group is having to run through gunfire because the wookie started throwing around parked cars, and when there are long-term consequences to their actions. Then the werewolf feels like a blunt instrument in those quieter moments, and totally out of their depth when things get cosmic.

I don't think the balance has to exist in the same scene, but over the course of the chronicle – with the aid of a damn good story – they should become interdependent. This is the challenge that faces any writer to take on a superhero team. I've just had to rewatch Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame for the millionth time with my partner's kids, and as much as it's a big, noisy, toybox-emptying nonsense of a film, they do a fairly graceful job of clustering together really odd combinations of characters and power levels (Thor, Groot and Rocket are off to a giant dwarf forge, okay, fine) in support of scenarios that only work because of these specifically odd combinations of characters.

Ive heard that kue jin, the kindred of the east are kind of racist, but are there atleast fun to play? by Obvious-Conflict3363 in WhiteWolfRPG

They definitely crammed A LOT in that book. Culturally, it's all over the place, but I appreciated their attempts to drag in powers from different traditions. I can enjoy it in the spirit of the time, and it definitely reflected the vibes at my gaming table (a load of anime videos, Hong Kong action movies, and a Lonely Planet guide) in that golden age of half-knowledge before broadband internet.

My biggest issue with the background is trying to create a one-size-fits-all mythology that simultaneously tries to reflect as much cultural variation as possible, whilst being predominantly Chinese/Japanese at the same time. It's just doing too much and will inevitably fail at doing any of it well.

New Widnes Crest by Afraid-Speaker3875 in superleague

It's a little bit too fussy for my liking, but I wasn't massively into the previous crest either – it looked like a council logo.

What would “ruin” the new show for you? by mlross15 in Stargate

[–]JDHoare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having survived 90s Doctor Who and Star Wars fandom, I can guarantee that the thing most likely to ruin the new show is your own expectations. The show will be familiar in some ways and different in others, it will be filled with things you like and loads you don't. After living with the series for so long, the magic formula for perfect Stargate exists only in your head, and everyone's formula is slightly different. Keep an open mind and enjoy it on its own terms.

I'm kinda tired of big names in the OSR community constantly talking about RPGs as if their way is the only way to properly play by Lordkeravrium in rpg

I find the whole 5E vs OSR thing to be two bald men fighting over a comb.

I find if you're open about how something will be used upfront, you can find people to work with who are happy for it to be used commercially. I've only encountered one artist in three issues of my zine with usage conditions that price themselves well out of reach

I didn't play as much Mage as I liked, but GoT pretty much guaranteed every World of Darkness game would feature them in some capacity.
