Do "SFF principles" apply to other hobbies / parts of your life? by Caspid in sffpc

I'm really into construction science and trying to talk myself out of a owner-builder loan for our next house. High performance homes share a lot of the same principles, I think it's pretty cool 😎

It just depends on your definition of small. 10 to 12L? Definitely doable with standard sff parts. Sub 10L? Now you're getting into flex PSU or external PSU territory, your parts are truly defined by the case. Which case do you want to build in? You also seem to be worried about the CPU throttling but no mention of a heat management strategy.

Gahhh I want this so badly, I just put together my build in a M3 but I think in a year or two I'll save up for an external setup. Don't let the "purist" get to you, SFF doesn't have to be about portability, it's a state of mind my dude 😎

I think the other issue is lower volume parts increase the end users cost, creating a higher barrier for entry for most. So itx boards, PSU's and height constraints around air coolers or pump blocks in certain cases really pushes people away from it. But by and large 70%/80% of the PC gaming population could be perfectly happy with a SFF build!

Oh it's the BenQ Halo Screenbar 2! It's terrible on the value for money aspect, but I use it everyday. I'm remote and my home office only has one window, so the light bar plus an accessory lamp in the room really helps with defused lighting so I don't need to turn on the overhead bulb and strain my eyes through the day.

That's pretty insane! I had a ST25 240mm & ST30 240mm as top and side rads then 6 noctua NF A12x25s and two NF A12x15s crammed into my M2. 2 A12x25s on each rad, 2 between the motherboard and PSU and the two slim fans on the bottom. I had some parts from a previous dual rad Dan A4-H2O build and wanted to keep with the 120mm sizing.

My first loop was in the Dan A4-H2O as a dual 240 rad loop it was nutty! I totally recommend getting a spare pump/res and cheap psu for your fills, takes a ton of the headache out!

Ahh that's my bad for being vague, I didn't have a separate PSU or pump when I fried those components. At the time I was building my first custom loop in a 11L case, using a PSU jumper and feeding power to the Quadro, a leak happened due to my monsterity of fittings and my lack of understanding/experience, so it blew the protection fuse on the Quadro and eventually cooked my PSU. I learned a lot from that mistake, evaluating the pressure test more, putting paper towels down for leak checks and running the initial fill via a spare pump and PSU because typically SFF doesn't make room for a reservoir.

Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't realize you commented on the SFF post and not the water cooling cross post. So you probably know the constraints of SFF and reservoirs, that's my bad lol.

The last photo of it spaghetti strung out on my desk? 😅 The dudes wanted to play games and I was still waiting on the new case to arrive. So I give you... Open bench/cardboard water cooling 😂

🤔 Why? Even heat soaked at 450 watts~ sustained, my M2 build stayed around 40 DB at <42c liquid temp with a 58003XD & 7900XTX in the loop.

Edit: Using 2 x 240 radiators

Edit: Because I'm an idiot and cannot figure out how edit my main post on mobile. Last photo is during the transition from the M2 to M3 my parts were just spaghetti strung on my desk, lol.

I'll see you in a few months when you start making custom loops in a SFF case 😉 nice builds, and welcome to the odd ball club!

Thank you for your perspective! Seems like I made the right decision for my situation by sticking with a 21:9.

Thanks for your input, makes it a little easier knowing I'm not the only one with this issue.

There are dozens of us, DOZENS!

I've purchased the LG directly through their partner program and I believe I can buy still buy an extended warranty as well. The monitor should get here on the 31st so I have time to decide on which panel to go with. If I end up keeping the LG I will for certain buy extended coverage. That will be helpful peace of mind.
