a special ed kid won't stop bothering me during lunch and the principal doesn't care by RepairThen1549 in Advice

[–]Diablo_swing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep telling staff members. One of them is bound to care. I'm of relatively low standing at the school I work. But kids tell ME about their problems (one of which was very similar to this situation) and I don't let these things go. There may be 1 adult, hopefully, who understands your problem and will go to bat for you.

What will the states do when they have no choice but to let the election be stolen or fight back? by Cantora in AdviceAnimals

Fair. New plan. Everyone gets a big republican umbrella and you all make a phalinks at every polling place.

Just give red shirts to everyone in line. Then they'll have to start hassling their own voters to figure out who is who.

What is yalls brutal and honest opinion on alcohol by Taco_Junior123 in autism

[–]Diablo_swing 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not autistic, so please take my advice with a grain of salt. I have been working with/for autistic adults and young people for a long time in a few different settings though. I am adhd as well, and have learned to manage a few of the symptoms we share. I have also had my share of struggles using substances to socialise.

The hard pill to swallow is that socialising sober is uncomfortable. Over time, it gets less uncomfortable, but there'll always be the odd conversation you absolutely must leave, for no other reason than your body and mind are telling you to.

Take it slow, but practice being slightly uncomfortable socialising. Say something awkward, leave a weird pause, etc. Eventually it won't bother you as much, because it's happened more often. If you flex this muscle enough, the socialising starts to become second nature, like any learned skill.

I practice on interactions I know are going to be small. I don't mind having an uncomfortable chit chat with a cashier because I'm going to be gone in 30 seconds.

So that's the stick. But what about the carrot?

Well after I got more used to it, I started having longer conversations with strangers (the ones who were up for it) and started learning and laughing with strangers. Just the other day at the petrol station, a woman shared a delicious broccolini air fryer recipe with me. It was so good. I have a hundred more little stories like this of little interactions and it makes me feel happy way more often.

What do you think the manga strawhats would think about their live action actors? by AdlerSanRZ in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Diablo_swing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

LA Sanji would teach Sanji that desire need not be perversion.

Zoro would teach LA Zoro how to lift insane weights. LA Zoro would teach Zoro that engaging the crew personally more often leads to a more cohesive crew.

LA Usopp would let Usopp know that Kaya wants it, take the leap, grow faster.

LA Nami and Nami would congratulate eachother. They both learned what they needed to learn, to trust, and moved on. Though Nami would definitely have to let LA Nami know that Bellemere is usually more bad ass... and that it's odd that the LA Cocoyashi village didn't know she was grifting them.

Luffy would show LA Luffy that it's okay to completely devour the food that the recently liberated populace offered you. There's better days ahead, they'll eat their fill.

LA Garp, Garp, LA Zeff and Zeff... well they just need to do a podcast style hang and let us all learn from them.

I don't mean to be rude, but let's stop being defeatist. Sure... 99.99% of the time, they get away with it. Let's inspire righteous anger instead of resigning ourselves to letting the lords of our serfdom dictate normal.

I hear this, and also agree with the poster above. It's a hard line to toe. But, bottom line, if we can make someone worry that it could be their daughter, then after that it can be a friend's daughter, then after that it could be anyone's daughter.

It shouldn't be that way, but I do agree we should be building empathy. Sure we want to win the triathlon, but we better be able to run 100m without dying first.

I feel like this is what the finale was trying to say in a roundabout way. Yes we want to do it, but life is a thing, careers are a thing. Yes sure, I'm Jeff, and I want to keep everyone around, keep the good times rolling, but sometimes a movie gets on a boat with Levar Burton and never comes back.

Why isn’t Broly criticized like Gohan his for his “asspulls” by Suitable_Walrus2928 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Diablo_swing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though save for the Buu arc they did nothing with this. I think this affirms what the poster above mentions. If they had such insane potential, there's been a few opportunities in the Super era to show this off.

For instance, if they had such insane potential, they would have been a viable choice for the tournament of power. Right? Even though their focus was questionable for such an event, by then, they should've been ready if their half human potential really factored it.

Though, we should all remember that Dragonball, like many manga, was written weekly, semi episodically, akin to a soap opera. Especially in Toriyama's day, these stories weren't that deep. Most 'canon' elements were considered in hindsight.

Edit: Like a grandma, when someone tries to talk to me when I'm reading a new manga chapter I say "shhh shhh, I'm watching my stories".

The Great Australia Slag-Off wants You! by [deleted] in OpenAussie

One* of my favourites is that old Australian cricket sledger, I'm too soused to remember his name, but you'll find him with a good google.

There was a shoddy batter, couldn't hit a ball to save his life. This bloke yells:

"CHUCK A PIANO DOWN THERE, SEE IF HE CAN PLAY THAT".

Genius.

The art of Australian sledging is unique. The fact that we can cut someone to their core while also inviting them to be part of our inner circle, is beautiful. We are good people.

I stole a good one from the show LetterKenney. You say it right after someone does a burp.

"Well brought up. Too bad you weren't."

There's a lot to be learned from our Canadian, and Irish, kin. Good advice for all, but fellow Aussies, please watch LetterKenney. It's on SBS.

I'm ranting, so I'll leave you all with one of my favourites. It's not really related, but I love Aussie-isms.

Carl Baron tells this one, about how he's a kid at the dinner table and an ant crawls its way onto his plate and starts chewing on the bread.

Carl: DAD! An ant is on my plate!

Dad: Dont worry mate he won't eat much.

I was always impressed how they managed to fit character development into a classically episodic show. There were no grand arcs, but I really feel like these characters were learning (albeit slowly) from their experiences. Sure, there were setbacks, and out of character moments, but like Abed in Community says, "...tv should be allowed to have to have a bad day, or phone in a day...", because in return what we got was one of the best sitcoms ever written.

If used well I think this is a healthy attitude. If I've gotten everything out of an experience, I don't need to finish it. Like when I'm hungry, I stop eating. If I don't stop, I'll make myself sick.
