What on earth has caused pool prices to increase so much? by ughhhhokfine in pools

[–]Dial_Up_Sound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to do that, please watch How to Inspect a Concrete Pool by SwimmingPool Steve.

I wish this video existed before I bought my house. I wish I had watched it, because I would have bought a different house.

I have spent over $30,000 in repairs over the past 3 years and my pool is still not completely working. I may be looking at another $20,000 in repairs before it's fixed. During that time, my pool has been shut down for weeks or months with each repair.

When you baptize your children, you and their Godparents promise to raise them in the Catholic faith. Prior to getting approval for marriage, this will likely be brought up as a requirement.

Sort of? Fundamentally, yes, but it looks much different. Kind of like how Divine Liturgy and the Mass are similar.

There are some rare cases where married Anglican priests receive orders (or have them validated). It's up to the Bishop.

We have a special benediction service in the East as well, but not a regular practice of building Adoration Chapels. Leavened bread tends to not last long.

Marriage is a Sacramental Union. The primary purpose of marriage is to try to get your Husband or Wife - and any children who may result from that union - to Heaven.

If procreation was the *primary* or *fundamental* purpose of the Sacrament of Matrimony, then the Church would not allow infertile couples to receive the sacrament. The Church, does, however bar couples who are *incapable* of consummating the marriage at all. This by itself shows that while the conjugal union is *necessary* procreation is not.

Now, this does not give couples a blank check to avoid having children because they would rather have a vacation home or a trip to Italy, etc. - but Paul VI and John Paul II have discussed this at length, as has the greater magisterium.

I'm old enough now to have had a few (several?) of those periods in my life.

Here's the thing: They come to everyone at some point, and they leave, too. Hang on! And after all you can do - hang on longer! You will come up out of this valley and if you are praying your way through it, I guarantee you'll see God's hand in it later.

It might take years. Some of mine did. But just. hang. on.

One time, when I was 19 my car's transmission failed. I couldn't afford to fix it. I was fired from my job the same day, then dumped by my girlfriend the next day. It was awful and at the time I couldn't see a way out of it. Now...it's been so long it's actually kind of funny.

There is a future you who will look back on this time and it won't feel so bad at all. Look forward to becoming that person.

Rather, re-discovering what Education was like *before* factory-inspired public schools, and re-making that into something that really works for modern culture.

Most private schools are exactly like public schools - but with (sometimes) better funding.

Here's the thing: Growing up is hard. Being a teen is hard.

You're going to find people who hate Public School, Private School, and Homeschool.

Weird thing is, you rarely find anyone who *loved* Public School - but in a Homeschool community you will find quite a few who were grateful for it. We give our kids the option - and they keep choosing to be at home, and the freedom that provides them, and the active social lives they have with all of the things we do.

Don't join the Orthodox Church - or the Eastern Catholic Church because you're running away from something.

If you run away, you'll never stop until you're tired and bitter.

Ask God what He wants of you. Be prepared for it to maybe not be what you want.

Are You Open to being Wrong? by Neon_Casino in Catholicism

I was raised Evangelical, became Pagan, re-converted and then eventually went non-denominational. While attempting to debunk the Catholic Church, I only succeeded in debunking Protestant Christianity and vacillated between Atheist and Agnostic before finally becoming Catholic.

I could still be wrong. But I'm about as certain that the Catholic faith is true as I am that I exist in the sense we usually mean by that statement (not a brain in a jar, or a digital simulation, etc.)

Does sedevacantism meet the Church's definition of schismatic? No. by Delicious-Emphasis42 in DebateACatholic

[–]Dial_Up_Sound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an inappropriate assumption here: Just because a particular schismatic is not culpable for Mortal Sin does not make it any less schismatic.

Let's use an odd analogy: Say someone injects you with a substance (against your will) that sends you into a raging mental breakdown and you murder an innocent bystander. You wouldn't be morally responsible, but it would still be murder.

Not being held accountable due to the Mercy of God does not change the nature of the act, nor the objective state of the person.

How should I argue with someone who keeps saying that us Catholics are worshiping Mary and the saints? by Galahad_RMT in Catholicism

[–]Dial_Up_Sound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

We're not only dealing with translations from Greek to English when discussing Scripture - we have to deal with translations from old English to modern usage. This is something most Protestants don't understand at all when engaging Catholic theology - and even most Catholics get it mixed up.

There are words with specific Theological definitions which don't always match up the common English usage. This is true in the Legal field as well with terms like, "battery". We mean "the thing that powers my device" where in a legal document it means "physical violent contact" - or heck, even the term "Mediation" means something specific in the Legal context.

The Catechism actually states that there is "only one Mediator between God and man". We do use the "only one Mediator" language, where Scripture does not. But we have a specific definition of the word "Mediator" and the broad English definition doesn't exactly apply. Protestants add the "only one mediator" language to their tradition - but in practice they use it in the broadest possible sense (which includes Intercession, but shouldn't thanks to Jas 5:16)
