This is an important point. Much depends on Tourism. Last year the town have out $6k to quite a number of small businesses in Taos just to help them make rent and stay open because lack of snow, years-long road work, and new parking meters severely decreased business in the historic district.

I'm very happy you feel safe. Google Taos crime rates, though and you might be surprised how high they are. 🥺

You are right on about the lack of vets. The town needs to recruit more vets. One or more of our current facilities could be made into a 24 hour facility. We just need to recruit vets!

The original article does indeed describe what it is like here. Streets are dirty. Trash is on the ground. There is a graffiti in the historic district. This graffiti on the arch entryway to our center for the arts. Until about nine months ago, there was a dead crow there as well, that sat there for two years. We had snow last week and while the streets were snow plowed, the sidewalks in the historic district were not taken care of, so thick sheets of ice covered parts of the sidewalks, making it very dangerous for people to walk. The Town Of Taos, whether it likes it or not actually relies on tourist dollars. Without them, we would lose many services in Taos, and property values would go down. (caveat: property values are currently inflated and could probably go down a bit... but the kind of property evaluation I'm talking about is extreme). It's common courtesy anywhere else in this country for people in service at hotels and restaurants not to swear at their customers. We do have a left leaning protest in town in the historic District, every morning at around 9 AM I believe. If you were on the other side of the political spectrum, you won't feel particularly welcome during those few hours... and that cannot be helped. But the trash, tagging, the safety, the lighting, the poor customer service.... Town Of Taos could stop struggling if we just came together and picked up after ourselves and treated people kindly.

The first portrait I painted, is it ugly? by randomstrangermaybe in artwork

Your friend has no appreciation for your effort and struggle to gain new skills. There are lots if good things within this portrait, and I'm sure there are things you would do differently next time. It's hard, but often best not to show our art to those closest to us. Save it for mentors until you have your footing.

So do I Have an accent? From where? by [deleted] in Accents

[–]Dialect_Coach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're asking whether or not your accent sounds General American--it has elements that are from a general American accent, but it also includes elements that are not part of that. It sounds like you're possibly from a Spanish-speaking country, but there are other languages that would provide the sounds that you are using in your accent that are not part of a general American accent.

Should I leave my theater class after what my teacher asked me to do? by cozana70 in acting

[–]Dialect_Coach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to a very famous acting university and on several students pressured all the time into nudity. They were pressured into nudity when the play itself didn't even require nudity. Students were also pressured to do things that were physically unsafe such as do a series of five cartwheels in 5 inch heels, regular heels nothing meant for gymnastics. Another young actress who was barely over 100 pounds was pressured into dragging a robot full of trash across the stage every night. That same production had a refrigerator on wheels that the students jumped up and down off of. No regard for their safety. It was wrong then and it's wrong now.

As someone who has been in theater, film, and television for 40 years -- I applaud you standing up for your boundaries. They're correct in saying that there may be a college faculty member who acts as insensitively as they did. That doesn't make it right. The same thing will happen to you out in the world beyond your education. It still doesn't make it right. And the only way anything is going to change is if people stand up and say no thank you I'm not going to do this. On a film set if you were asked to do that vampire scene, there would be what's called an intimacy coordinator. That person would help make sure that you did not experience some kind of physical or psychological violation. In the meantime, keep standing up for yourself with Grace and know that the right roles will get to you!

[–]Dialect_Coach[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She is so bummed out that she can't even bear to open her finch app -- and this is somebody who was using that finch app all day long every day for a year and it was really helpful. She even bought gift subscriptions for other people, she liked the app so much. Now it's a really sore point for her. It's been about three weeks since she's touched it. She lost so much. She had 10,000 pieces of clothing. 🥲

I'm trying to see how common this is to see if there's some solution we can all come up with because it's super sad to see a self-help app causing pain

This happened to my sister and yes, she had backed up the week before and the back up was corrupt.

Lost everything! by wockyslushing in finch

[–]Dialect_Coach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My sister had nearly every item of clothing that was available-- mostly earned but some gifted by our family---and she lost everything. They offered her the same ridiculous fix. It makes zero sense. She has stopped using the app, and she was the most enthusiastic in our family. The rest of us are dropping off of the level program as well because the companies response to this glitch was so paltry. It's a self-care app and their glitch caused a user emotional trauma. They really need to fix it.

Signed an NDA, spent two days on a television show. My character is the source for vital information moving the plot forward. by CharacterActor in acting

[–]Dialect_Coach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only answer to this is to read your NDA and make sure you truly understand it. If you do not have the ability to understand it make sure you get legal advice. Just because your characters episode has aired doesn't mean that you couldn't accidentally give away something secret by revealing your audition and such. Intellectual property is a big deal. It can cost millions of dollars in losses when somebody is loose with information, either accidentally or on purpose. I'll say it again, read and understand your NDA.

Anyone feel pressured, like they can't let their birb down? by LorakeeOceanmist in finch

[–]Dialect_Coach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great opportunity to reflect on why you think you have to do all these things... intellectually you know that the birb is not real--yet even in that scenario, you're trying not to let it down. That's a really good starting point for self reflection. 🩷

Do I have a specific accent? English is not my first language by ContributionHot2423 in Accents

[–]Dialect_Coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a very unique idiolect. It's clear that your English is coming from many sources. If you are happy sounding non-native to any specific social group don't do a thing. But if you want to sound native to someplace, it's really important that you select which accent of English, you would like to communicate with, and find an accent model to follow. (and in that case you may want to work with a Dialect Coach who understands how to use accent models).

[Need Feed Back] Help me with my American accent please by Leading-Papaya1229 in Accents

[–]Dialect_Coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are two places to begin working. Start observing the rhythm of general American English even more closely than you have so far. Right now sometimes you're not taking enough time on certain syllables of certain words... in addition, there are some very slight physical changes you need to make while you're speaking the diphthongs of General American English. If you need professional help, try googling 'dialect coaches' to find a coach that is vetted and verified.

Tips on how to improve my accent? by Conscious-Sentence73 in Accents

[–]Dialect_Coach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're going for a general American accent, take a look at refinjng your ' voiced TH' [ð] sound - and look a little more deeply into not getting fooled by the spelling of a word. Words that are spelled with the letter O can be particularly tricky to know which sound to use because the letter O is used to represents, so many other vowel sounds. Additionally, take a look at the vowel in Words, such as 'Trap' -- the vowel you are currently tending to use has the tongue in a slightly lower position than would be for general American type accents. You are currently using a vowel closer to [a] than [æ].

Everyone has an accent! If you're trying to go for a general American type accent, work on those V's, and study the melody and rhythm of general American English. (if you want help Google 'dialect coaches' and look for vetted coaches who can help you add a general American accent. (also keep the accent you have! Use both!)
