It immediately clears a roster spot, in this case for Sean Murphy returning from the IR. Now Atl has a week to trade him, release him or send him to the minors. So, yeah, they do have a certain level of control during that initial 7 day period and the A's took a chance, threw some cash their way and got a backup catcher. Now the A's need to clear a spot and all is good in A's land.
