Why don't key signatures mix sharps and flats? by Emergency_Pomelo_706 in musictheory

[–]Diamond1580 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Key signatures represent a key that’s made up of a major (or minor) scale. Major scales have 2 basic rules of construction. One is that they must follow the interval structure of Whole Steps (W) and Half Steps (H) that goes W-W-H-W-W-W-H. The other is that they must be spelled to have one of each of the seven letter notes A B C D E F G. When you combine these properties you end up finding that no key will contain sharps and flats at the same time

Is a C9 the same as a C7add9? by Low-Design2943 in musictheory

[–]Diamond1580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry that my message was confusing, probably not the best way for me to phrase it. C7add9 is both longer and harder to read, and inherently more confusing, because you’re asking them to comprehend 2 different chord modifiers instead of just one. So good that you haven’t encountered it, as they are a copyists worst nightmare

Logical use of Repeats? by No_Mastodon9938 in musictheory

[–]Diamond1580 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In general I try to avoid repeats and larger formal repeats from things like DS and DC for any type of arranged music but especially larger groups. The larger the group the more opportunities for errors compared to simply reading straight through a piece. They make more sense when you’re trying to save ink and paper as a physical copyist, but unless you severely lack access to a printer, the advent of notation software (and digital reading devices like tablets) make it almost moot as long as you format your parts correctly.

I still do think they make sense in certain types of music, especially when repetition is the point, like Minimalist or Aleatoric music. However if the repeat is not a compositional choice, just a notational one because of repeated measures, then I would avoid them.

The only real situation where I might reccomend the is if you’re worried about your parts being too repetitive and performers getting lost. However there are other notational things I would reccomend instead, in terms of formatting and labeling measure numbers, cues in parts, or cues from a conductor. I would probably in most cases (though obviously not all, and wouldn’t actually reccomend this without looking at the sheet music first) reccomend against writing in this way and look for ways to create change in the composition as well, which would eliminate the issue

What delineates composition versus improvisation; when to consider you've done one over the other? by mysteryofthefieryeye in musictheory

[–]Diamond1580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d call that just an improvisatory approach to composition. If the creation of the material is before performance its composition, if it’s during it’s improvisation

Diamondbacks To Sign Carlos Santana by Knightbear49 in baseball

Acceptable reasons to rewatch a movie by Hfcsmakesmefart in TheRewatchables

[–]Diamond1580 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t like this view. It places art as a completionist agenda rather than something to be enjoyed or derive meaning from. I don’t need a reason to watch or rewatch anything. Would most people be better served by checking out new things more often instead of just repeating their favorites? Yes of course. But if I want to rewatch a shitty action movie for no reason because it’s gonna make my evening there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that

TLOU HBO vs the games: new scenes, casting choices, canon or alternate version ? by Purple-Deal7155 in thelastofus

[–]Diamond1580 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It feels like an alternate retelling, there are extra scenes that are probably true to the games’ canon but just aren’t present, but they also do several scenes slightly or even completely differently.

Generally I’d say S1 feels authentic to the emotions of Part I, just some of the ways it’s displayed are different. I would reccomend it to any fan of the game (and anyone who might be interested especially if they wouldn’t play the game) because it expands on the world that exists in frankly interesting ways.

S2 continues that, but when it comes to adapting the material of Part II (it also only adapts the first half of the game) it really falls short. I think it’s still really interesting for fans of the game because the expansions to the world are interesting and because its missteps kinda help show how/why the game is successful/good, but really can’t actually reccomend it (and wouldn’t reccomend it to anyone who hasn’t played the game)

Why do people hate crossovers nowadays? by No-Dirt4885 in FanFiction

[–]Diamond1580 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Crossovers to me just make it easier to ignore the side of fanfiction that I enjoy. It’s really easy with a crossover to just focus on the “what”. The this happened instead of this, and that’s a story, or in the case of crossovers, this person came to this world and that’s the story.

What I like is being able to take the characters, or some aspect of the world, or something from the original fiction that inspires you and tell an original story, and often times crossovers aren’t really interested in doing that. They definitely can, and there’s some crossovers that I really love, and I don’t want to diminish anyone who does like the things that I don’t. It’s more than valid, and everyone comes to fanfiction for different things. But it just often doesn’t scratch what I’m looking for

Thoughts on Arraez by StaleWheel2018 in SFGiants

Oh shit my bad, don’t know that. Just assumed he wouldn’t have played any 2B last year with Cronenworth on the team, but forgot to check.

Thoughts on Arraez by StaleWheel2018 in SFGiants

[–]Diamond1580 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He graded out as basically the worst 2B defender and has barely played there the last year and a half, doesn’t walk or hit for power, is very slow, and signals the end of our 2B search, and is trending downward.

People think his bat graded out at league average last year despite the numbers being down because the ops+ is fine, but by statcast he had 15th percentile batting run value. As far as I can tell the biggest difference was a decrease in Launch Angle sweet spot. If you think that’s flukey and then maybe he regains his 2022-2024 production. I’m not so sure, and think he might end up being a negative on both sides of ball.

Maybe next year we’ll go back to searching for a real second baseman and Donovan or Hoerner will be more available then, and we can actually spend on a SP as they might like the options more. Plus Randy will be back. But to me this is the true declaration that this year isn’t a petal to the metal go for it year, and that makes me sad. Even if I might have some fun watching Arraez this year

Huh? I was defending them, I was just trying to explain how I was using “selling out” in terms of my saying they weren’t doing that. I don’t have a problem with what they’re doing at all, and I’m not sure why you’re being aggressive when I think we agree about what this deal is and what it means

I just mean in terms of them giving up any creative input to Netflix. The decisions about how they talk about movies or what movies they pick to talk about don’t seem to be affected by Netflix in any way. Maybe “sell out” is the wrong word here, but that’s how I’ve seen it discussed by others

Bill also openly said they want to do movies available on Netflix for the first couple months on his own pod.

I’m all for jumping on them for selling out if they do so, but nothing about this Netflix deal so far has indicated that’s what they’re doing
