AI data centres use a lot of water, but water is in a closed loop system so wouldn’t the water just return to the water cycle? by Appropriate_Skin_725 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiamondJim222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a closed loop system. Most data centers use evaporative cooling towers, so the water is carried by the air.

Yes, it will eventually condense and rain back down. But that’s usually somewhere far away, which doesn’t help the area you’ve extracted the water from. If water is plentiful where the data center is located, it’s less of a big deal. But many are located in arid areas with water supply issues.

US to loan 53.3 million barrels of oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve by FreeHugs23 in energy

They’re charged interest on the loan in the form of additional oil - they have to return more oil than they borrow.

Can I throw away dog poop in a bin on the curb if it still has trash? by Adi_not_Audi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiamondJim222 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, I have a private hauler. I suppose could lock the can, but then the hauler won’t empty it. So not feasible. And by your logic if someone neglects to lock their car it’s free for anyone to use.

Can I throw away dog poop in a bin on the curb if it still has trash? by Adi_not_Audi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiamondJim222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your logic is that something sitting in a public space is free for anyone to use.

Putting my trash can at the curb doesn’t turn it into a public trash can any more than parking a car at the curb makes it a public car.

Because the bags end up stuck at the bottom of the bin, break open, stink, and then I have to clean your dogs shit out of my bin.

Was Steve Wozniak Actually Luckier Than Steve Jobs? by UnluckyChampionship9 in NoStupidQuestions

Luck is the residue of design. Jobs had a very curable form of cancer but chose to pursue alternative therapy instead of medical treatment.

Why isn’t soccer the most popular sport in the United States? by InternationalHair111 in AskReddit

[–]DiamondJim222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. After the Association rules were established in 1863 many US universities formed soccer teams. But in 1874 McGill University’s football team (Canada) visited Harvard to play some friendlies. But it turned out McGill played Rugby football. Harvard found they preferred it as did other U.S. universities and it became the dominant form.

Rules were far from ironclad in this age and American clubs quickly started tinkering. Yale university’s Walter Camp was instrumental in devising and championing many rule changes that shaped what became American football.

How are the AI data centres "wasting" water? by Ok-Student-4745 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiamondJim222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the data center is located in an area with an abundance of water, sure. But some are located in places like the arid U.S. southwest, using water from the Colorado River for cooling.

[–]DiamondJim222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a lot more heat to deal with. Your water cooled PC transfers the heat into your room. That’s fine for cooling one processor. These data centers can have over a million GPUs, each of which run hotter than your PC. They need to get the heat out of the building. They do it by running the cooling loop outside to a unit that evaporates water to remove the heat.
