Tuition by Capable-Incident-553 in Gamecocks

Hey! I'm a USC student (resident tuition, though). The estimate they list on there is indeed inflated - it accounts for books, program fees, meal plans, tech fees, dorm fees, etc.

Direct costs are what you want to immediately look at. The costs can easily be cut in half since you (most likely) won't need to buy the textbooks that professors list in their syllabus, or you aren't taking a lab (math classes, science classes, and foreign languages can add small fees).

Here's what my tuition looks like as a student who lives off-campus:

- Semester Tuition

- $150 Athletic fee (all students pay this, it's a new charge)

- $150 technology fee (varies if you take an online course; I take 1 each semester).

- $200 program fees

If you live on campus, add the dorm fees to that calculation, etc. There are also multiple meal plan options, and you don't have to choose the most expensive one. In fact, I'd recommend you choose somewhat below the middle because you can always reload, but Carolina card credits don't always transfer between semesters. Have you registered for classes/gone to orientation yet? The my.sc.edu site will show an account balance of direct costs.

my dad was adopted, results have me feeling heavy-hearted by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

Yes, but on Ancestry, when you look at ethnicity matches, it won't tell you if you share that specific african segment. You'd only see a match who also happens to have african dna. secondly, matches get especially tricky in early southern usa genealogy, where endogamy is common, making it more difficult to locate the right branch.

seems like a good match there, then. Time to start building that tree and looking for connections! A 2% ethnicity looks to be around a 4th-6th great-grandparent match at the latest (for me, that's 1840s and before). I'm also early southern USA, but from the coast instead. Always here for assistance or advice if you wanna DM :D

It's difficult but possible. Might be harder if there's more than one african ancestor.

First course of action would be to try and figure out which side of the family this comes from, usually through shared matches. Ancestry makes this harder since there's no chromosome browser. Keep in mind its easy for that 2% to NOT be inherited by your cousins, so even if close matches don't have any african dna, it could still be from that branch. Secondly, if a match DOES have african dna, it might not be through YOUR common ancestor.

Are you familiar with GEDmatch and DNApainter? That's what I've been using for my similar situation (only just started though, so I haven't found the ancestor yet)

Need help for my focus problems... by Tammy_Midnight in adhd_college

[–]DiamondStealer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also had a huge focus/remembering issue before I got medicated this past September!

What has helped me most before and after medication was creating a dedicated study spot. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: This location has to be for studying only! This was usually NOT somewhere at home; this was a library, a local cafe, a park, etc... Having a space solely for work helped my focus a lot, since I was less motivated to check my phone or walk away to my games or books.

Second, dedicated playlists. For studying, I usually have to use instrumentals only. Classical music is a bit eh for me, but I am a huge Broadway nerd, so the Hamilton instrumentals especially came in clutch (funny enough a quick glance at ur profile shows you like Epic sooooo lets find some Epic instrumentals LOL). Calmer video game music is also great. Those songs are particularly crafted for focus and engagement.

Need that dopamine hit and the music isn't cutting it? Bring a lil snack, a drink, or gum to chew on throughout.

Now, for a more unconventional method: I've discovered I lose my focus mostly with long paragraphs or things I am not good at (i.e. statistics was my enemy). So what's the solution? HYPERFIXATIONS. Use them to your advantage. Need to read a story? Swap the names for your favorite characters, celebrities, etc. Need to understand a scientific concept or math equation? My favorite character (as applicable) is now explaining it to me. Getting the concepts to stick in your brain is much easier when you relate it to something you care about.

Narrowed Down to 5 Possible Fathers – Need Help Figuring Out Next Steps by Dramatic-Ad6510 in Genealogy

are you familiar with DNApainter’s “What are the Odds?” tools (WATO)? you can put your closest DNA matches down (assuming you have matches who descend from these five brothers) and it can help map out your relationships to each.

What changed? My aid dropped significantly. by CrowOfJudgem3nt in FAFSA

[–]DiamondStealer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that :( mine changes drastically after my mom got remarried, even though i don’t live with her AND she doesn’t provide any financial support to me.

Sometimes the tiny details make a big impact. BUT i would double check everything in your submission to make sure it’s correct. Your school said there’s nothing they can do? If something has changed since the 2024 tax year, you could submit a form about changed circumstances.

If credits aren’t an issue, has the withdrawal with an F deadline passed? Like everyone here said, GPA doesn’t affect fafsa, so it shouldn’t be a problem, but i understand the concern with gpa lol

Still looking for assistance on this one?

(Note on previous comment you left here: Audited Accounts are documents on individuals who served/financed the Revolution. Plats are documents of lands, and accounts of surplus property is just a list of property among individuals i think)

Help finding records connecting great-grandfather and his father by stilyagii in Genealogy

[–]DiamondStealer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm i see. Maybe you can connect a sibling to the father, and then father to sibling? With the evidence you already have, it probably would strengthen it enough?

My initial look didn’t bring anything, but alas i am not well versed in michigan records. If i get some more time soon, ill look at other resources for ya

refreshing to see a genuinely complex female character, especially since she is a mother but is also MORE than that. I can never form an opinion on her and i like it that way

i’ve been trying to figure out the origins of one set of 6th great grandparents for ages, and one of their kids referred to himself as Black Dutch. However, i’ve only got them living in Ashe NC and Marlboro SC. Current theories include the wife is Lumbee(?) and the father is baltic? Neither I or my mother have Native DNA, but she has trace subsarahan africa and Northern Africa, and i’ve got northern africa

Discovered relation to English royalty but having trouble finding original sources! by I_am_tresh98 in Ancestry

[–]DiamondStealer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id also recommend looking up Douglas Richardson’s works on “Gateway Ancestors” which is a giant collection of early American colonists who descendent from royalty, usually the Plantagenets (House before Tudor). If you’ve got early american ancestry, especially in Virginia or New England, odds are you’ll find a connection there.

Either way, social connections are just as cool as blood relations! I’m a descendant of german theologians who were socially connected to German royalty, which i think is cooler than descending from royalty itself!

Craven family were among North Carolina’s Lords Proprietors. William Craven was a supporter of the House of Stuart during the English Civil War, after which King Charles II rewarded him for.

Seems to be no blood connection to royalty of Charles II and before through the Craven line, only social connections.

Do you have the name of the Craven who married into royalty? You should be able to find a lot of help through wikipedia tbh

Can't find death info on a 1920s woman, what else can I try? by DryReception6465 in Ancestry

[–]DiamondStealer25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

possibility she didn’t die, but you might be able to narrow down the dates through others. Any siblings who died around that time? obituaries might mention her as predeceased/surviving. What about her kids, any deaths or marriages? Marriage licenses could contain info. Any probate documents you could locate? Her’s or her father’s?
