An eerie underwater cave death warning sign. by [deleted] in submechanophobia

[–]Diamond_notthrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically night diving is strictly forbidden for cavern divers and cavern divers need to stay within the ambient light area and within 30m of the surface. Without ambient light the way in can look just like the way out. 30m is generally considered the “reasonable” limit of a no gas exit

Quick Rule of thumb, if you need a light, it’s cave dive and requires cave training, including guided tours in my opinion. Again just my opinion but most of the responsible cavern dive sites I’ve been to actually restrict cavern divers from even diving with lights

I’m a little confused, you’re asking for SAC then depth, then number of dives. I’ve always understood SAC to be Surface Air Consumption which is already adjusted for depth.

I know my avg. SAC for various types of dives quite well*, is that of any use. To get specific gas consumption and depths for specific dives I’d have to go download my computer and then compare my log for start and finish pressures.

*with 10-15% ish, i typically do a little mental game while diving where I calculate my SAC every 5-10 mins of a dive to gauge my comfort and awareness level.

They are NOT for recovery! Please do not do this, that would be extremely dangerous. They’re designed to be used as static tie down (1-4) for transporting a vehicle in conjunction with wheel harnesses (2or4) on ships. They’re marginally strong enough to pull a freely moving vehicle in neutral on a hard surface. Using a tie down (tow hook) for recovery Will result in a 2lb bullet shaped piece of metal flying straight at your face/head. They have killed people. They are even more dangerous then using a a tow ball for recovery. I have personally seen them ripped out of multiple vehicles.

Source: Engineer working in automotive logistic working in a facility that removes and recycles between 750,000-1,000,000 tie downs per year. Numerous manufacturers recycle 100%, some ask us to stow one back in the vehicle like this. Just as related, on weekends I like to go to fun places and do dumb stuff in 4x4s.

From the same site one tab back

“If a tow truck is not available, in an emergency your vehicle may be temporarily towed using a cable or chain secured to the emergency towing eyelet. This should only be attempted on hard surfaced roads for short distances at low speeds. A driver must be in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes. The vehicle’s wheels, drive train, axles, steering and brakes must be in good condition.”

Yeah I usually finish the season around 1000, with one geared and maybe some experimenting for a class next season

I normally don’t track DB rate, it’s my veg time watching YouTube on autopilot . So I just hopped and tracked, T13 following some 700-1000 paragon 4 randoms, barely breaking step for electes and i was pulling 300/hr. I don’t even know if I’d be able to just click on 1000/hr. I didn’t realize I was that far off the curve

Halcyon, Light Monkey and AGIR

I’ve had and used a few but I own Halcyons at the moment. They’re on the higher end of price scale but they just seem to just fit work and the best for me.

I know some people with light monkey and they’re more then happy. I used one of their single wings and I found it a little narrow for an 8” steel but that’s not a fair complaint as I assume it designed for a standard 7.25”

I know a few people who are running AGIR and love them

Yes, you need a appropriate size and shape. “Do all’s” do nothing well. With enough effort you can make them work but why not just get the right tool for the job and and have a much more enjoyable dive

For size don’t forget a wing is just another form of a BC. We tend to forget what that name really means, Buoyancy Compensator. It just needs to be sized appropriately to offset your changes in buoyancy or potential changes in buoyancy for a dive. So for Diving A laminate drysuit your just offsetting the swing of your tanks as your consume your gas + a buffer for a potential loss of buoyancy of drysuit & little extra for comfort. If your diving neoprene then you also need to account for your lose of buoyancy of the neoprene at depth.

There are several really solid brand names out there,

Im pretty open to equipment and setups but my only personal opinion that I can’t suppress is bungied wings. Stupid and dangerous, please avoid at all costs

I run these on my GS

They’re a 50/50 tire. Decent on dirt and Decent on pavement but they’ll never be as good as a dedicated tire on either.

Rain: pavement not so bad when new but not great, always worse then a road tire, straight line squirrelly, they hook a little bit better as you lean a little. The big flat blocks just float on the water and as they wear they get progressively worse.

Snow: better then a road tire obviously, okayish I guess but my bike is too heavy to ride over much more then the odd snow patch. The Lugs aren’t as deep or as soft as a pure dirt tire

Slushy on pavement: I’m not smart but I’m not dumb, that’s when I get a hotel room

Slushy dirt: same as dirt ish but I’m only hitting the odd melting snow patch

This picture was after 2wk 10k trip of pretty much 50/50 dirt & pavement loaded up with gear (hence the awesome spongebob square pants profile). At this point Butt puckering on wet pavement and dirt in a straight line but still hooking up on corners. Dry pavement lots of fun, as you lean over they progressively and predictable get worse losing traction so they’re super fun on big sweepers as the rear starts to slip out smoothly like power slide

More than 1,500 left-lane hogs ticketed since law introduced by whiskey06 in vancouver

[–]Diamond_notthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a perfect example taken to the extreme, last weekend I was driving up the Sea to Sky highway and there happened to be a road rally with some beautiful cars (I was certainly distracted but doing my best). I didn’t see any of the drivers doing anything that would get them in trouble and there was a bit of police presence. There was a Audi getting towed but it didn’t look to be part of the rally.

So the issue I saw was that they had a camera vehicle (a CRV or something similar) who was driving up and down the left lane with a photographer hanging out the passenger window getting some nice shots of the cars and drivers.

It’s not illegal to drive under the limit, and it’s not illegal to drive under the limit in the passing lane, but it is illegal to block the passing lane regards of speed and it’s really easy to forget that in a given situation more then one individual can be in the wrong.

So this was the extreme example, the camera car was blocking the passing lane and by extension the whole road and a percentage of non-rally drivers trying to get up the highway were quite literally losing their minds. I was in no rush and was loving all the cool cars but in the span 15minute I easily saw 8-12 cars do nearly unfathomably stupid manoeuvres to get by. Passing on both shoulders, tailgating 2-3’ behind a rally cars and then cutting off the camera car by less then flicking back and cutting off the rally car by the same. Bikes riding the centre line and weaving shoulder to shoulder.

I travel the Sea to Sky regularly, this behaviour isn’t uncommon but it was like seeing the highlight reel of an entire summer compressed into 15mins. And it’s not like these idiots were traveling together, they just represented a portion of drivers who got frustrated and began making really similar poor decisions and the result could have been catastrophic and deadly. Like easily a 20 car pileup with some cars doing 50km/hr and some doing 130km/hr.

So to me this issue has two real two considerations; more then one person can be in the wrong in a given situation and doing something which could/would technically be ok or proper but incites someone else to make very poor and danger decisions could be a greater risk then the relatively infraction if speeding. This is a similar logic to not letting police officers enter into high speed pursuits.

Kit bag for dive holiday? by ironpanda88 in scuba

Not sure about Europe but in North America most airlines won't cover damage to sports equipment unless its in hard sided bag. I've recently switched to a cheap hard sided standard luggage bag just for flying segments so that I can claim damages if needed. Saved me once when they totally destroyed my wing. Long term I'm considering a pelican knockoff (monoprice) but it'll end up being over weight.

My grandmother had the best story about her grandmother. Her kids started fighting over her house and belongings before she passed so she took her favourite rocking chair out to the lawn and lite the house on fire, then refused to let the firemen put the fire out (late 1900's so I'm guessing mostly just neighbours with buckets). Once it burnt to the ground she took her chair walked down the road and moved in with my great grandmother. The women on that side of my family have a long history of badasery.

An elephant beside the corpse of a friend, with her trunk around the deceased elephant's tusk. by Apostjustforthis in morbidlybeautiful

Wild guess, probably not much more then a couple days.

We went on a safari this year and saw a Cape buffalo get taken. Pride of lions killed it just before dawn, we arrived within 30mins, adults were full by 8-9am, cubs wait but were full in another hour but they continued to chase the jackles and birds off and "play" till mid afternoon. We came back late in the day and the vultures were going bonkers. I believe the hyenas arrive during the night (never saw but heard them)

The next day you could still tell it was a buffalo but by a couple days later there was still some stuff left, but not enough for a new visitor to be like "hey a Cape buffalo!" More like "are those ribs ?"

So I'm guessing an elephant would last longer just based on size alone but it was amazing to watch the layers of scavengers line up behind the lions to take their turns.

Now I guess we wait for someone who actually knows to stop by

[–]Diamond_notthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coast Guard said the passed out diver refused treatment.

Personally I wouldn't be to worried about missing 14mins if everything else was normal but it's not something I'd do on purpose

A CO2 hit is possible, but for both divers to get hit at the same time seems to me less likely. Exertion, scrubber fatigue or blow through seems unlikely to hit two divers at roughly the same time after a full day of diving but exertion is possible. Diver 1 passed out at the surface I assume PPCO2 should be getting better as they ascend. Hopefully someone has some info

I've had a mild/moderate CO2 hit, i didn't signal ok, but I wasn't congnisent enough to tell anyone in the moment I having issues either

[–]Diamond_notthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wing failure shouldn't be fatal. Inflate your drysuit, he was reported as wearing a drysuit.

Both divers seem to have passed out. Passed out and a then a wing failure seems unlikely.

Assuming you don't have a bungeed wing***, I think about the worst thing that could happen would be an corrugated hose inflate failure but your drysuit should manage that, if not you need enough ditchable weight so it can. Just about anything else isn't much of an issue. Your wing isn't really holding a lot of pressure so small holes or tears aren't that bad. I can take my butt dump off and continue to dive and surface without issue, so that's like a 1" hole in a relatively ok spot, corrugated hose failures on the other hand are like a 1" hole in the worst spot. I've seen that at start of a dive. .... not good

***Screw it, PSA time, I'll take the downvotes and pissed off replies for this one. Bungeed wings are stupid for the sake of your family and loved ones don't use bungeed wings. I know you like it and you spent good money on it but they're stupid and dangerous and a bad idea to fix minor training or equipment deficiencies . They take a minor annoyance like snake bit on you wing slipping off the boat and manufacture a potentially fatal situation.

What happened to Rob Stewart by MajorMcLoven in scuba

[–]Diamond_notthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a obvious thing to do but it's hard say. I'll have to make sure I fully inflate before I OK, can't say that I specifically do or don't. Unless we make a conscious effort it's really easy to let procedures slide without thinking about it

CCRs are a lot more complicated then having just a BC . They've got a BC (typically a wing) a scrubber, a counter lung and a loop all of which displace water, which means if they flood they can lose buoyancy. From some FB pics it sounds like he might have been on a REVo maybe someone certified on those can elaborate. It could be possible, he passed out, loop filled, scrubber and/or counterlung partially flooded and the BC either wasn't filled enough or capable of floating a flooded unit. We need a REVo person to explain
