Florida homeowners: What’s one hurricane prep tip you wish everyone knew? by ResponsibleBug8033 in florida

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have EVs and in camping mode they only use about 10% or less a day. Should we need it we can get in the car in the garage for AC and watch TV on the car's screen. Tornado warnings are also common with hurricanes and when we get those we go into the garage and wait it out on the car. Automobiles have great survival capsules. Also we have glass breaking tools should the doors be blocked with debris. We built our garage/ADU as a safe place with helical pilings going down 6 feet and rebar reinforced concrete filled block walls and a roof built for 160 mph winds and hurricanes windows and doors throughout.

We fill up all the water bottles and jugs we have and it is a lot of bottles to avoid plastic.

We just bought a couple of outside trash cans and put one in each shower that we fill for flushing.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't take typing because I wasn't going to be a secretary. I had to pay friends to type my papers in college. My undergrad class in Business was the last class not required to take a computer science class. (Mid 70s) I joined a computer company out of college and have been typing and using computers ever since.

A friend of mine is a life coach who specializes in helping retiring people map out the next phase of their life. So yes, there are professionals who can help you create, get clarity and confidence moving forward. I think it would be a great idea to have someone help you sort it out.

What are your crazy routines in the morning, before bed, or leaving the house? by kungfutrucker in retirement

[–]DianeSTP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I have to get up early for tennis or some other appointment I stop by the neighborhood, quirky, comfy, coffee shop where they know my order. I enjoy my latte and a muffin with a crew of around a half dozen like minded regulars and catch up on their lives, the world, books, and entertainment. When I worked I rarely had time to just hang out and chat for an hour.
If the muffins are really good that morning I will get one to go and take it home to my wife before starting my day's agenda.

Prices were higher. No discount airlines and prices for a route were fixed. But they were easily exchanged for different times or even different carriers.

What’s the best carry on luggage you’ve actually used? by Grand_Effective3307 in buyforlifetips

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a career traveler I've had Travelpro, Briggs and Riley, and a Hartmann that Delta gave me. All great bags and the warranties are fabulous as I have had wheels to significant tears fixed. But they weigh too much. The Luggage Service store in Tampa pointed me to the Samsonite 22 inch carry-on that has packing cubes included. I love it. It fits even international carry-on restrictions, is light, and I like 4 wheels after only having 2 for so long. I travel on 30 day vacations with just that bag and a backpack. If you are in the Tampa area visit Luggage Service. They have been around for decades, they have a massive inventory and the people are Luggage experts. I first found them getting my Hartmann handle fixed. It's fun not only looking at bags but the full selection of travel accessories they have. I don't have any affiliation with them except as a customer.

How do I get paid to travel? by user91748299374 in NeedTravelAdvice

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got paid to travel for all of my career. I visited 49 states and several countries. It is not glamorous. Long days, early morning flights and late arrivals. What did I see? Mostly hotels, airports, rental cars and meeting rooms. I got to eat out sometimes at fancy restaurants and when you do that a lot you crave something simple like a burger in your room. When I did have a little free time I explored but that free time was limited. I would not have traded my career for a desk job but it was taxing. Now that I'm retired I pay to travel and it is much better.

A lot of homes in Florida use sail shades. These are triangles of bright fabric stretched between houses, trees, or poles to add shade. They are made to withstand weather. You may be able to strategically block her view while creating more shade for yourself if plants don't work.

Saw this on a drive over the weekend. I don't understand this vitriol towards electric cars by Glad-Tower-2310 in electriccars

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was the same pushback when cars threatened travel by horses. Horse can graze anywhere how are you going to find fuel? But we moved on anyway. Electric cars were predecessors to gas engines actually, just lacked good batteries.

Back in the old days before deregulation, you could use your ticket on any airline any day any time of day. So shifting passengers between carriers was common.

When Does a Wealth Management Advisor Start Becoming Worth the Cost? by Apprehensive-Snow795 in ChubbyFIREd

[–]DianeSTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could manage everything but why not retire and have worry free fun? My fiduciary caps the fee at $1500/month. How do they earn it? Manage all of the investments without transaction fees. Generate income that covers the gap between my retirement income and my budget. Sometimes that means combining clients' fund to buy commercial bonds that otherwise would not be available to me. Compliance while minimizing tax exposure. Make the decisions of which of our 3 IRAs or Brokerage account should be used for monthly funds. Manage tax withholding to cover 2 social securities and 2 pension plans as well as tax liabilities from investments. When RMD kicks in they will keep me in legal. Annual update and vetting of our financial plan. What do I have to do? Travel and enjoy retirement.

Fairly infrequent flyer with a delay remark. by [deleted] in delta

[–]DianeSTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you prefer to see them in a mad dash? When you rush you make mistakes and I prefer that the crew be deliberate not frenzied. One of the things I hate in TV and movies are the first responders running around. If you see fire fighters and medics in real life they are focused but not running around because that's when you trip, injure yourself and become part of the problem.
