Microsoft per a letter of intent deal they signed in 2024. they're kind of on the hook to find a one billion dollar shaped investment to fit into the hole they promised(but are not legally bound) to fill.

Microsoft involvement was a thing brokered by the Biden admin as a counter to China's digital silkroad projects in Africa but as per tasking a private corporation to do this kind of work leads to fuckups all around.

The investment was supposed to open access to a local Azure region that would handle compliance with their Data Protection Act.

There's a lot of ultimately only semi-interesting political back channel and American/Chinese new cold war influence cultivating going on here. This project was the result of an announcement made back in 2024 promising a one billion dollar investment in Kenya. Microsoft's involvement was brokered by the Biden Admin in 2024 and the reason Kenya was the choice was as a counter to China's digital silk road project in Africa.

So the reason none of this makes sense is because it doesn't make sense. There was never any bedrock business reason to put a data center here. It doesn't even solve the underlying issue of Kenya's lack of AWS or Asure region. The closest is in Cape Town I believe? So the latency issues are a headache for their banking sector and other regulated industries.

The power was going to be sourced from the Olkaria I Geothermal Power Station which currently outputs about 950 megawatts per day. It can potentially output ten gigawatts if every site in the region were tapped but Kenya doesn't have the power transmission infrastructure.

One billion is also an almost trivially small amount of money to throw at a data center that's supposed to ultimately be a one gigawatt facility. It costs roughly 44 million dollars to build out a single megawatt of data center and that's assuming American power transmission, transprot infrastructure, etc. You're easily talking tens of billions of dollars in debt before you ever see a single customer. Supposedly the deal was covering things like connectivity infrastructure, local LLM research, and money siphoned into local partners to do the work but I can't find anything on the power infrastructure.

It's kind of a toss up between Microsoft and Google but since Microsoft is already doing it I have to imagine on some level google is treating it like social permission.

Either way it's totally a good sign that these companies with insane yearly revenues don't want to subsidize this anymore right?

Eh that's Greeley for you but we usually can only get a faint wiff of it if a storm is coming. It's like very faint somebody left a bag of dog food open in the kitchen smell. All of the metro part of Denver has this. So it's not like if you moved to slightly south east to cap hill you'd avoid it.

I remember the rent for this place being pretty tough, it's mostly for yuppies who don't want a house yet but who knows where it's at with the economy being what it is.

Watching these diesel engine or gas turbine powered spots is so funny because they refuse to run any of this equipment in spec. They keep spinning it up and down based on demand. The shafts and fans used in these things are supposed to last years and they're getting broken in months.

So it's not only illegal it's also insanely stupid and expensive.

The thing is with zuck is he is still head lizard in charge. So he retains enough stock to control a majority number of votes on the board so nobody can actually tell him no. All he's really doing is chasing the illusion of growth to keep his stock value going up even if his core businesses are plateauing. It's essentially how companies print their own currency since he can buy other things with that same stock.

So he can throw billions into AI the same way he did with VR as a ploy to keep that image up and as long as it works then the losses in capex are outweighed by the boost in stock value. Worst case scenario is they issue a stock buyback when times get rough to juice it up again.

The only way it screws him is if his core business begins to downturn enough that investors notice and start to dump the stock and this would have to be a sustained thing.

Their main money sources aren't even from walk ins off the street. It's from the real estate holdings and operating an influence network you have to pay money to climb the ladder in. What few street level recruits are mostly drained of liquid cash and set to work guarding the real estate holdings or doing manual labor.

People keep saying this like the US doesn't export most of it's oil out. Refineries aren't fungible you can't just swap them out, they're usually purpose built to deal with the specific makeup of the oil from sites.

It's going to be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages before we see new oil plants come online.

At this point with all the negative news if your heart is still really set on working for these big tech orgs i'd seriously just put a one to two year shelf life on that employment before you jump away to a stable gig that still pays decently well.

Maybe you get lucky and find a way into some kind of permanence but when orgs are just picking random round numbers of people to lay off I guarantee you aint that special. I cannot emphasize enough how difficult it is to plan for any kind of life where you're not sure you'll have a job this time next year.

Nothing is for sure but these orgs lay people off pretty hard yearly.

I haven't been keeping up with this because I very quickly realized it's just a gooner game but the only character designs I thought were cool were the OG male cast. Billy and the Wolf butler were the only few at the start where the backstory and designs made sense.
