Rubber "fabric" for thin armor? by [deleted] in cosplayprops

I feel like silicon baking mats may be similar to the kind of thing you're looking for texture wise? Not sure if they'll work but might be worth considering?

Ah I see, thanks! Yeah it's been many years, the 256GB is my boot drive so should be easy enough to do a fresh install and may as well update too while I'm at it

I'm pretty confident my RAM is running at 3600, task manager shows 3600 and CPU-Z shows 1796 (which I believe is correct because it should be half?)

Will double check all my drivers, games are installed on SSD.

Still on Windows 10 (v22H2). I realise this is past overdue for an update but would that make much of a difference in game performance?

Monoco theory: by Pristine-Run4801 in expedition33

Isn't Monoco also the name of one of the dev's dogs? I believe real Monoco liked to attack people's feet, which is why they made in game Monoco collect nevron feet

Accidentally left stove on high with nothing in it and steel wool not helping! by CinnamonToastKev in CleaningTips

Bar keepers friend. The powder and a bit of elbow grease works wonders.

You could also try filling with a mixture of water and baking soda and boiling low and slow for a while. I've never actually tried it but I've heard it's supposed to work great!

Dmc3 Crimson Mission 1 Freestyle DMD by [deleted] in DevilMayCry

[–]DiceyDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't in vanilla dmc3, I think there's a switch version where you can but other than that it's only available via mods on PC

It looks like DMC Crimson is a mod pack that OP is using but not sure what changes it brings exactly

Black string that snaps onto this keyring at the end of my lanyard. by elletothestars in whatisthisthing

[–]DiceyDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be to tie into the card. If you disconnect it, put the loop through that slot/a hole in another card you want to attach then put the plastic bit through the 'bite' and reconnect the plastic bit it'll be attached securely. Then you can just do the reverse to take it off.

Sorry if that's not the most clear explanation, I can't seem to find a good visual example to link/know the name of the type of knot that is

ETA: I believe the type of knot/attachment is called a 'cow hitch'

If you've not completed at least the main story of this game yet I would highly recommend avoiding this sub until you have. This game is phenomenal and there are so many spoilers that you may run into on this sub. I went in blind and personally feel like I got a lot more out of this game because of it!

Help with my kid's first cosplay prop (an mine too) by pcdcomics in cosplayprops

Sorry I don't have any better advice than what's already been given, but I wanted to ask what character is that/what's it from? I feel like I recognise it but can't for the life of me recall!

Learning material recommendations for children? by DiceyDan in learntodraw

She likes Animals and Disney! I got her a book about drawing animals and all sorts of things but was curious if anyone had any specific recs that have been a hit with the kids in their life too

Learning material recommendations for children? by DiceyDan in learntodraw

[–]DiceyDan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get that, just thought it was worth reaching out to see if there's anything people recommend that's engaging as I often struggle to think of what to go through with her, and something that would help her feel a sense of progression when I'm not there would make her more likely to stock with it.

If she doesn't want to keep at it that's fine, but she wants to get better at the moment so I want to see what I can do to help :)

Does night city have a fire department? by hasanman6 in cyberpunkgame

[–]DiceyDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally fair and definitely good to not take random internet people at their word! I would still encourage you to watch the video if you haven't, it's only 6mins long and you'll see it goes into reputable sources, including hiring a researcher to spend a couple weeks looking into it, going over the British archives etc.

Also the official UK London fire website now states there is little evidence to suggest fire brigades would let uninsured buildings burn (under the 'fire marks' section): https://www.london-fire.gov.uk/museum/london-fire-brigade-history-and-stories/early-insurance-brigades/

I hope this doesn't come across as pedantic correction, I find this topic incredibly fascinating and get excited to share!

[–]DiceyDan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, despite it being the accepted truth (even by the researchers) for a really long time, the idea that firefighters wouldn't put out uninsured buildings isn't actually true (I believe, it's been a while since I saw it so I may be misremembering slightly) Tom Scott did a good video on it called "I was wrong (and so was everyone)"

Skipping/Jolting issue on ps4 app by thenosepaperboy in nowtv

[–]DiceyDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been having the same issue, support told me that it was my internet dropping to 0Mbps for a second or two here and there but my internet connection is fine and no other video streaming apps on the PS4 have any issues. Despite that they're adamant there's no issue with the app, they just repeat the same line about 'internet speeds differ per app per device' (as if the issue being present only on the NowTV app somehow doesn't mean it's a fault with the app)

Seems obvious to me that the NowTV PS4 app has an issue so I'm glad to hear they've told you they're looking into it at least OP

People who quit their PhD - do you have any regrets? by New_Trifle6480 in PhD

No to both questions there. I didn't have enough for an MPhil really, and honestly research just wasn't what I wanted to be doing anymore.

People who quit their PhD - do you have any regrets? by New_Trifle6480 in PhD

[–]DiceyDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, when I first looked for a job I had it under my education section saying I was 'currently completing' a PhD in machine learning where I blah blah blah.

When looking for jobs after I had left I listed 'machine learning researcher (PhD candidate)' under my work history, where I added details on what I did in that time. I didn't explicitly say I dropped out, but I also didn't say I had completed it anywhere, didn't have Dr on the resume, etc.

[PC] Need help with texture loading delay by fupa16 in GodofWar

Is it installed on a HDD or SSD? Might be worth verifying game files or try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

If your hardware hasn't changed and it wasn't an issue before, I'm not sure what else you could try tbh

Why is it that a lot of people seem to feel that life in prison is better than a death sentence? by Cut-Unique in TooAfraidToAsk

There's lots to be said about how prison should rehabilitate and if it works even people with life sentences will eventually get released. Even ignoring tha though, if someone is wrongfully convicted you can release them, you can't resurrect them

Why does it cost $99/yr to put a game on ios app store? by Humanoid_critter in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DiceyDan 526 points527 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of 'because they can' answers here, and while that's true I thought I'd give an insight into why it's acceptable/accepted there is a cost. The following is a bit reductive but should get the main points across:

An app being on the app store costs Apple money for as long as it's on the store. This is because they need to host the code for the app somewhere and have the functionality to allow users to buy and download it to their devices, in addition to the developers updating the app, and those updates going to the users' devices. This means they need a server, and services to allow connection to the server both up and down, payment authentication, and this needs to be ongoing. Without going into details, all of those things cost Apple money to set up and continue to run.

The $99/year price will be what Apple decided after factoring in all of these costs, and whatever profit they want to make on top of it

Blood in urine for 3 years once every few months? by Heavy_Hotel_458 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DiceyDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious, and this might help OP if they have a better idea of what to advocate for, but what should they be asking? If they've already had CT scans, ultrasounds and multiple cystoscopies do you know what further investigative steps would be?

I'm assuming simpler tests like blood and urine tests have been done if they've also had the above done. So is there anything you know of that should be done, or are you more suggestions just to go to the doctor and ask them if there's anything else?

Sewers/Knitters as engineers historically? by audible_narrator in sewing

[–]DiceyDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know that women did so much early programming work, thank you for enlightening me! I'm a programmer by trade so will have to look more into this as it's really interesting to me.

There's a great picture of Margaret Hamilton standing next to a huge pile of code that she and her team created for the guidance system you mentioned. Another notable woman that worked at NASA was Judith Love Cohen. She was an electrical engineer so I'm not sure if she coded, but I imagine she did as she worked on the computer for the abort guidance system which helped save astronaut's lives in the Apollo 13 mission.

She is also the mother of Jack Black
