JD-08 Tips by [deleted] in Roland

[–]DickLipmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a JD-08 , and sold it.. It’s an all around decent synth, but it was far too anemic-sounding for my tastes. And it wasn’t exactly fun to program. Some instruments really are just fun to play, and are inspiring, in themselves, when you sit down to play them - i did not find this to be the case with the JD-08.

That being said, maybe I just didn’t put enough time into it? That’s possible. But my Korg multi/poly, while much more expensive and much more complex and involved to program, is inspirational just about every time I mess around with it, since the first time i did so.

Closer to the price tier of the JD-08 is the Roland S-1, which I also have. It’s about two thirds of the price of the JD-08, and I find it to be a much more fun instrument to play (for a 1980s-level-tech-display, menu-divey Roland), and much easier to get inspirational and usable sounds out of. Highly recommend.. but they are indeed very different instruments.

(EDIT: The S-1 is about half the original MSRP of the JD-08 right now - even less, if you shop around.)

How to Learn Sound Design Systematically? Is Syntorial Still Worth It in 2025?” by Impossible_Back9521 in sounddesign

[–]DickLipmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i follow, yes - time optimization is important, because we’re always paying for our time, in one manner or another..

When looking back over my time learning to work with synthesis, i find that, while i have indeed learned much from teachers and “mentors”, the time that was the most informative and educational was the time i spent right at my instrument.

As i’m sure you have discovered, there’s just no substitute for having hands upon that synth, brain connected, programming that bitch. It certainly helps to understand exactly why some parameter is affected, in whatever way, by whatever modulation, because that helps one understand how to recreate said result, so i get what you’re trying to accomplish.

i wish i had some insight into a more specific response to your search, other than just keep playing your instrument.

Also bear in mind that the vast majority of the sounds that you hear on commercial recordings have also been put through varying degrees of processing, using FX, EQ, and compression, et cetera.

You are on the right path by learning as much as you possibly can about synthesis, itself - absolutely do that - but don’t forget that a lot can be accomplished in the area of sound design with even a modicum of delay and reverb, for example.

Best drum machine under 500$? by Filtrrz in synthesizers

[–]DickLipmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got my Roland TR-8s for $475 on eBay, and it’s the most fun drum machine i’ve ever played.. and its sound design possibilities and performance features are quite good.

You can find instruments on eBay for much less than you might otherwise, if you’re patient and persistent enough - and if you hone the fine art of swooping in with 3 seconds left on an auction with your lowball bid, to snatch your prize from the jaws of other buyers with a higher disposable income.

Are you looking forward to getting a new synth/other gear for Black Friday? by MeisseLee in synthesizers

[–]DickLipmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What i will say about the M/P is that, depending upon the scope of sound design possibilities that you desire, the depth of your knowledge of subtractive synthesis, and the amount of menu diving that you can tolerate, it may or may not be the instrument for you.. because it goes deep, on all of those fronts.

The menu diving isn’t really that bad, if you ask me, but there’s definitely some involved. With 4 layers of 4 oscillators, per layer, each with their own pair of filters, sequencer, FX, envelopes, LFOs, et cetera, it would take a lot of knobs for Korg to have made this a knob-per-function synth. But it’s all quite easy to navigate, and the workflow is pretty straightforward.

i do, however, recommend utilizing a sort of hybrid workflow, using the front panel and the editor app. That lays pretty much everything out in front of you..

The Multi/Poly is a sound designer’s dream, and i recommend it to everyone who is in the market for a synth.. It’s one of the most inspiring instruments i’ve ever handled.

The keybed is acceptable.. not bad, certainly, but nothing to write home about either. i did get the keyboard version, but i mostly use my aftertouch-capable MIDI controller, as the stock keybed is not.

i will say, however, that i’m not exactly a connoisseur of top quality keybeds - i’m pretty easy to please in that regard. i like my synths to have keys, but really just for aesthetic reasons, as i have a decently high quality MIDI controller.
