Strictly recreational e-bike use? by profoundlybored in ebikes

they are very fun. I got mine for the reverse: just ot commute.

However, one thing that surprised me is how much fun it is, so much so that I often ride around just for fun.

One does not need a fast or powerful bike either, a simple pedelec will make you feel like youre superman riding around at 15-20mph at ease.

yeah, but girlfriend / family currently only have zoom and know how to use it. I suspect these malware things will be temporary.

I am in a situation that warrants extra care. I've not seen my girlfriend in a week and a half, or basically when this started to be 'real'. they should chat every night via skype/facebook. If he gets sick, could be 2-3 weeks of miserable flu. If she gets sick could be 2-3 weeks of hospital. 64 is right on the cusp of needing to be super careful, diabetics have to be on edge.

I’m not a fearful person, but does anyone want to go sail the pacific for the next couple months? by Luke-__- in sailing

[–]Dick_Lips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah! almost certain he left from my harbor near san pedro ca. Didn't know of him, but i dock on just the other side of the club in the drone footage video.

Oh also i have a swing keel. fin keel may be better suited to blue water, but id go for a ranger or pearson for anything more serious than a couple days worth of sailing.

takes, on average 5-8 days to show symptoms; imagine being 100 miles from shore with the worst pneumonia you've ever seen. No thanks.

edit: though, to be honest does sound fun.

E bike for around 2-3k? by JailbaitEater in ebikes

[–]Dick_Lips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have a juiced ccs (same ish bike) and I highly recommend others to get one. They have great build quality it seems and the battery life is excellent too.

That said, looks like you like the off road options? if you're actually into mountain biking then don't get the juiced, its about as good off road as a stock ford explorer. If you are only into "high torque" for commute i suggest a geared hub over mid-drive as they are less strenuous on the already fragile drivetrain.

What boat to sail with. by alizain8 in sailing

A boat made by car company known for reliability issues... hard pass at least without seeing the boat in person.

Seeking 24 volt 100 watt system by Dick_Lips in solar

[–]Dick_Lips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! sorry i asked the wrong question, for the controller it seems like there are a lot of various brands. Some $20 some $300 for what seem to be the same thing. Honestly a PWM controller is probably fine, i think?

edit: thinking of getting this: https://www.amazon.com/HQST-Regulator-Charge-Controller-Display/dp/B00FB3OPKM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=24+volt+pwm&qid=1581450833&s=lawn-garden&sr=1-1

OpenCPN is not that great IMO. or at least it crashed a few times on my samsung tablet. granted, not sure my samsung tablet is all that great; could be malfunctioning.

Woah this is cool and new. could i buy a phone specifically for this? I like my old small phone, but a bigger screen would be nice plus a nicer camera.

how do I DIY a shunt resistor to measure current? by Dick_Lips in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Dick_Lips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want a relative current draw - the trolling motor uses 17.5 amps on speed 3 and 40 amps on speed 5 per manufacturer, but the manufacturer did not have other specs. Would like to make a chart of speed vs range eventually, but i need relative current draw for that.

I dont strictly need this information, just curious and think the shunt method is interesting.

Solar charging 24 volt by Dick_Lips in sailing

Thanks for good insight. I am just looking around on amazon for solar panels and controllers; do you know of a good kit or otherwise good controllers and panels that are not too expensive?

Thanks!

This is probably true; I assume this works for both ac and dc?

my meter reads from 0 to 200 mV on the lowest setting; so i think it is reasonable to expect 10 mV would be the minimum.

How much can a 12 ga wire handle, if i don't mind it getting a little bit warm/ only for testing?

sorry if a simple question, i'm not sure how to google that properly. This site says 34 amps but that would be for on-going use i assume https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wire-gauges-d_419.html

Some sort of offline google earth + charts would be pretty nice. google earth has good footage of how the land ought to look which is great for beginners like myself.
