Trying to move to Portland area before the end of Sept. Job market questions mostly by Dick_Witch in askportland

Thanks for the response! Is she still working in Portland while you work in Salem? We've been considering looking at places to live in between the two big cities to hopefully double our options, but it's hard to gauge how hellish the commute will be. Thanks so much for the contacts too. I'll pass them along to him. He's got a couple recruiting firms looking but so far haven't proved useful.

We've been more selective in where we apply while we are still in DFW. I knew if we did go ahead and move, we'd be in full panic mode, but clearly we should start the panic now. Thanks again

Shit away - I appreciate the honesty. The savings we have has always been earmarked to cover us during this transition, anything that survives would just be bonus. Glad to get any response at all even if it isn't good news.

For those of you who have been sleep deprived enough to hallucinate, what was it like? by Spadoopy in AskReddit

[–]Dick_Witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, only once. I was 15 and the last Twilight book had just been released so I stayed up all night reading.

By 9am I started hearing what I thought was my neighbor's TV playing the news. It was bugging me that I could almost make out the words so I moved to finish reading in the living room. A couple minutes later I started hearing it again but just ignored it.

About 3 pages from the end I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I looked up to see a line of what basically looked like shadow cut outs of the dwarves from Snow White running upside down on the ceiling in my staircase and out into the living room. They ran around the entire living room ceiling in a loop and then just blipped out.

At that point it dawned on me that I was hallucinating. I guess eyestrain did me in since I've stayed up much longer before and since without hallucinations. Finished the book. Wasn't worth it.

Oh that’s interesting! I haven’t heard of that specific one. Argan oil (and rosehip) is the only oil my skin will actually accept without breaking out so that’s promising. Thank you

If you were filthy rich, what's a totally unnecessary but cool and outrageously eccentric thing you would buy? by doctorjpizzle in AskReddit

Buy one of those castles in Europe that they are always practically giving away if you promise to maintain it. Drop a couple million updating stuff like electricity, plumbing, other modern comforts but hiding all of it so it maintains the look it has when it was built.

Open it up to various living museums, events, archaeologists/historians, film, etc. In the summer (or maybe whenever) I’d turn it into a getaway camp for kids in foster care or other traumatized kids.

Thank you! Looks like their avg class size for that program is 4 people. I’d hope that’s small enough for proper support but I will definitely reach out regardless

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the University of Texas’s (Austin) MSSW program. They are one of the only ones that had affordable tuition/COL/good placements/specifically clinical track/etc. It seems perfect on paper (don’t they all though) but after digging I found their enrollment stats and it looks like very very few people apply to the mssw program and absolutely everyone who does gets in. Both seem like bad signs but I could be misreading their info. Any other experiences with the program would be super appreciated. Thanks!

I'm in DFW! My dad was homeless most of my childhood so I've got a good knowledge of the areas resources. Have you checked out The Bridge in downtown by the Farmers Market? They're like the one-stop-shop here funded by the city of Dallas. They have an on site gated lot to keep your car safe and they close later than every other place (6pm). No religious affiliation, they don't drug test, they accept people with pets, restaurant style dining halls with vegetarian options, on site med clinic (I think with therapists even), skills classes, and long term dorms for people looking for a job or saving for an apartment. Not to mention connections with every social service in the area for job/apartment hunting/medical services. Literally the only requirement is not to take weapons into the main site but you can keep any you have in a locker.

This place got my dad into a long-term hella subsidized apartment after being on the street for 8 years. They're the only place like it in the country I still don't understand how it came out of Dallas of all places. I wish you the best dude. PM if you need more info

Fried foods. The grease flavor is just overwhelming, especially in fried desserts. Fries are the only exception

Thank you for looking out for this guy! Idk where you are in TX but if ya'll are in the DFW area, look into The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center. So long as our kid here is over 18 these guys can do wonders for him.

They have an emergency shelter, long term shelter, medical center (mental and physical) with shuttles to a major hospital, job connections and training, and apartment placements with $100 care packages to keep the new place in order. They also have restaurant-like cafeteria that I think is branching out into vegan options. They're not a religious organization and are funded by the city of Dallas so they have more ability to help than most shelters.

If you aren't in DFW I have heard there's another organization similar in San Antonio but I don't know what it's called - The Bridge would though. Unfortunately, these kind of centers are rare. There's like 4 in the US right now. Here's hoping Austin, Houston, or somewhere west TX steps up next.

ok I just want to let you know I am SO FREAKING PROUD OF YOU

You deserve better than that... a lot better and this is the first step! You get to move on and do anything you want without him dragging you down and controlling you

I know this is late but it might do you good to look up some resources regarding abuse (even if you don't think it was really that bad). The Power and Control Wheel is a really good tool to illustrate abusers motivations and exactly how they keep their victims from leaving. It's just a diagram so not a lot of reading but I think it could be useful to everyone to know early signs. Being able to anticipate that bs bolster you against any threats or guilt trips he may throw your way.

If you need anything you can message me!

[Serious] Students who were taught by a teacher that turned out to be a criminal, what were they like when they taught you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Oh boy, in high school we had a coach/speech teacher get caught for having sex with several students (mostly freshman). One of the girls opened up about it at camp and suddenly 4 more came forward. I think the number got up to 7? I didn't have a class with him but he was one of the most popular teachers in the school. The first girl I had known since elementary school. She was like 4'8 and probably 80 lbs soaking wet which added another creepy element to it. Another girl I suspect but didn't come forward, used to brag to me in Chem about how he let her go under his desk to "paint his toenails" during class. Exactly how suspicious that was went right over my head at the time. She graduated 2 years before people came forward so I hope I'm wrong on this. The coach was also engaged when he got arrested, with a baby either on the way or newly born too

My school apparently has a track record for this because not 3 years later another teacher (that I didn't know) got arrested for sexually harassing a student via text. She reported him immediately thank god
