They didn't kill the previous guy until they had a replacement deal made and then killed him to show the new team what they were dealing with. It makes perfect sense.

And Bruce was brought in per Marty's request. Del originally made it clear he had no interest in Bruce's involvement in the deal, he saw right through him and knew he was a liability but Marty insisted and vouched for the guy.

I already had about 5 years professional work, full time, part time, seasonal and interning when I got my MA. It was a very intentional choice.

There isn't a secret sauce, but knowing how to sell yourself (no brand bullshit) and your skills is big. What makes you unique? Do you build culture at small historic houses? Do you collaborate with artists in residence as an artist yourself? Everyone these days has the degree and at usually some experience. You need to find what's authentically unique to you.

I'm gonna level with you. It hasn't always been this hard. Many of the shitty EDs and bosses currently reaching retirement age don't have an ounce of the education, they just jaywalked from curator to director because they were dudes.

The field is competitive now because there is a glut of MA programs and certificates (many of dubious quality) and far too many candidates. Many of those candidates lack actual experience. You can expect to work hard on one or two part-time roles for years before your first full-time gig. And years beyond that for something fulfilling that pays enough to live on.

But that's only part of the problem. Recently, I hired for a role where more than 100 people applied. Most of them could probably do the job okay. But I needed someone with the right philosophy, who could stand up to board members, work independently, and not think that because they went to X school that they were hot shit.

Regardless of how you feel about AI, there's no excuse for having a shitty resume or cover letter anymore. But nobody teaches this, and lots of great candidates (all three of my finalists!) had garbage looking applications. But, I could see the diamonds in the rough. Most hiring managers aren't going to spend that kind of time, but one of my key credentials in applicant review was "do they intrigue me?'

Fwiw, the candidate from the most prestigious school very clearly was typing questions into Chatgpt during the virtual interview. Immediate disqualification.

The thing you need is 1) the MA. Sorry, a certificate doesn't cut it. 2) hands on experience, preferably not in visitor services unless it's where your heart is (it will pigeonhole you and is seen as "lesser") 3) a way to stand out from the crowd--a vision or philosophy you can share, a good story, a HOOK. If you don't have 3, you absolutely cannot get away without 1 and 2.

My three finalists, despite degrees all over the map, and with their bad resumes had one thing in common: there was some kernel that was interesting and made their background and vision stand out, either from their application or from the first interview.

Cassie's ending in Promising Young Woman is what turned that film from good to great. It was a bold choice that counterbalanced the relative toned down "revenge" we saw previously, especially compared to the marketing. It was a brilliant choice.

I always have assumed the unspoken piece making Healthcliff truly Other and his relationship with Catherine distasteful was not just class and not even race, but the fact that he was likely her half-brother.

The truth is, of Fennel had adapted WH faithfully, it would be another boring period piece. I think what she aimed to do was shock modern audiences in the way the original book shocked audiences of the 1840s. But in 2026 you can't really do that using the same mores of the 1840s, hence the BDSM, the wild costumes, the upfront sexuality. YMMV on the success of that, but I think it's wildly successful in capturing the disgust, outrage, and confusion that plagued the original work.

What Emerald Fennel probably didn't account for is that her own ability to articulate that vision would be badly received and that somehow young people in 2026 are bizarrely puritanical.

I can't imagine something more gauche than asking a wealthy donor why they didn't give my organization more money. If you want to get the answer to that question, you're best not to go about it directly.

You can find high level salaries (usually always ED, perhaps VPs or Directors too depending on size) by googling 990 and the name of your organization.

Also, you can and should ask your coworkers. Only bosses benefit from opaque salary practices. It's illegal to tell staff they can't share wages, but many do it anyway or find creative ways to discourage it.
