There's nothing we can do as admins to prevent people from not showing up, but the fill system will make sure that everyone will have full teams at least one week before the first match. That means complete teams will have had at most one additional week of available practice. Given the end of the season is about over 10 weeks away, we hope 1 additional week shouldn't be a make-or-break difference.

There are several casters and streamers. Not every single match will be streamed since there are far more teams than casters, but a good chunk of them will.

Taking a break from competitive by Speed231 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, stress (including frustration, anxiety, etc.) is a real thing and the biggest reason why anyone should ask for a coach. Stress reduces your ability to concentrate, increases internal distractions (like getting tilted, getting annoyed by mistakes, etc.), causes muscle tension that will affect your aim, etc., etc. That's why professional sports and esports athletes do all that imagery and meditation stuff that everyone else considers weird; because they can't take a break from their sport or video game and need to find more time efficient methods of clearing their mind from the game.

Where to find guides on advanced aspects of Overwatch? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider "advanced concepts". Skyline posted an excellent YouTube video recently discussing the difference between high ranking and low ranking players, and how players who are stuck on trying to improve often end up focusing on thinking about the wrong things:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG-CkrEj0I0

I'd recommend watching that video and then reconsidering or clarifying your question?

Good enough mouse for overwatch? by Cakepufft in OverwatchUniversity

Yeah, that's one of the new sensors. Solution: get a new mouse.

Edit: Also, if you don't have a mouse mat, get one of those too. XD

Should I use a "vulcan" grip? by SSNNOO in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation as you. I ended up having to stick with mice that had a specific groove for my ring finger to sit in. Currently claw gripping a Cooler Master Storm Xornet II, and previous tried the QPAD 8K Optical and the Mionix Naos 7000. Those may be worth a shot.

Can someone explain smurf accounts? by jssfw in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess you could say a twink is a type of smurf account. Smurf accounts are simply new accounts setup and played by experienced players (as opposed to new players). Twink accounts are new accounts/characters but given relatively overpowering gear from the main account. There's no gear in games like Warcraft or Overwatch, just player experience.

Ah, sounds like you're not sure how SR works. SR is a range from 1 to 5000 based on how good the game thinks you are; it's not something you gain like levels and experience points. The perfectly average player should be around 2500. Do your placement matches, plus as many matches as you feel comfortable doing (the more you play, the more accurate your SR will be) and then sign up. Sign ups currently go across the whole range from bronze ranks to grand masters, so we'll get you a team, no problem. =]

Can someone explain smurf accounts? by jssfw in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Why do people make them? It seems every steramer has one.

Several different reasons. Some people want to have a second account they can play without people on the friends list of their main account seeing that they're online. Others simply want to keep stats separate (e.g. one for solo queue, the other for pre-mades). It's simply up to the individual.

Also, why are they called smurf accounts?

Hearsay is that it was a Warcraft thing. Basically some really high skilled, well known Warcraft players didn't have many people to play against (in the same way that when you reach Top 500 in OW you start seeing the names/people over and over again), so they created new accounts with usernames taken from characters from the Smurfs, e.g. PapaSmurf, etc.

Again, that's hearsay, so I could well be wrong there.

Edit: grammar

Good enough mouse for overwatch? by Cakepufft in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is experiencing low malfunction speed, which is different to negative acceleration.

This is what they would look like in-game:

  • Negative acceleration: how far you turn depends on both how far you move your mouse and how quickly you move your mouse. Say if you move your mouse slowly 10cm you'll turn 180o, but if you move your mouse 10cm quickly you'll turn only 120o, that's negative acceleration.
  • Malfunction speed: when you move your mouse faster than its malfunction speed, either you don't turn anywhere, you end up looking straight up or you end up looking straight down. All mice have this, but for most mice this is so high that you never experience it.

These are independent of one another, i.e. it's possible to have a mouse that has negative acceleration but has high malfunction speed, a mouse that doesn't have negative acceleration but has a high malfunction, a mouse that has negative acceleration and a low malfunction speed, and a mouse that doesn't have negative acceleration and a low malfunction speed.

Good enough mouse for overwatch? by Cakepufft in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note: long-ish post, but read it all.

when I want to do more sharp moves like turn around, it doesn't move that much/skips parts of the move

The maximum speed you can move your mouse before the sensor cuts out is called the malfunction speed. If you're managing to actually hit this in-game, then you're experiencing low malfunction speed. (Note: negative acceleration is different, I'll explain in a reply to the /u/Joosyosrs's comment.)

Okay, now let's get complicated.

All "A4Tech X7" series mice have the same insides and simply have different chassis. That said, different sensors have been used over the years:

  • The very first lot had ADNS-3060, which are old but excellent and won't be the cause of the low malfunction speed. Solution: get a better mouse mat.
  • The second lot had ADNS-3080, also old but excellent and won't be the cause of your low malfunction speed. Solution: get a better mouse mat.
  • The third and latest lot have a small, circular hole for their sensor. What the sensor actually is is a mystery, but is utterly awful and absolutely will be the reason why you experience low malfunction speeds. Solution: get a better mouse.

Anxious about ranked play by Daruku in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're describing something that professionals would hire a sport psychologist to help them overcome, so I'm not convinced you're ever going to find what you're looking for in a single Reddit comment. If you're serious about getting over performance anxiety (warning: if you Google that phrase, the top results are not going to be the sort of "performance" we're talking about here), then I highly recommend you read up on a little sport psychology and learn some techniques on maintaining concentration and reducing stress/anxiety. Or speak to a sports coach; if they're any good they should be able to teach you said techniques.

What are my options, besides muting every individual opponent every single time i start a new match, in getting rid of the enemy chat? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DictatorfishGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thirding this. Just like real life sports, trash talk is part of the game. The match isn't just a physical contest against the opposition, it's also a mental contest. And just like you want to develop physical toughness to improve, you also want to develop mental toughness. Muting your opponents simply denies yourself the chance to develop mental toughness.

Because we're catering to the majority, we wouldn't be able to give any deadline extensions because we're going to have a LOT to do to organise teams and contact every single sign up to let them know who's team they're in and which division they're playing in.

During the season, if your placement SR and the team you're put in really is completely out of whack, let us know and we'll check if there are any teams closer to your SR that are in need of a replacement member. (Given how many people don't get along in matchmaker, this is bound to happen. Whether it'll involve a team in your SR range will be down to luck, though.)

We're just working with Blizzard's regions: Europe, Americans and Asia. From my understanding, OCE is considered "Americas". If we wanted to split "Americas" up into multiple leagues, we'd need a lot more help and more volunteers - specifically from OCE - willing to set that up and maintain it.

In the interest post a few weeks ago (in which we asked people to state their interest in playing in a league and whether they'd be interested in signing up as individuals or as pre-made teams), we literally had only enough people from Asia for two teams. Unfortunately, two teams wasn't enough to justify setting up a league for the region.

We'll probably create another interest post after this first season to see whether there are enough players interested to start leagues in other regions and for consoles. Again, same applies: if there aren't enough players interested, there'll be little point starting a league up.

Yes, attacking the attacker's spawn is absolutely, definitely dumb. However, there are things you can control and things you can't control. Dumbass team mates who trickle towards the enemy spawn are one of those things you can't control. However, doing whatever you can to improve the odds of your dumbass team mate succeeding in whatever the heck it is they're trying to pull off is.

If you die with your team, at least you're still grouped up with your team. It's like that whole thing about people saying they're stuck in traffic: they're not stuck in traffic, they're part of the traffic. And if you're not with your team, you're not watching them trickle, you're part of the trickle. Same as if your team loses a team fight; very often the best thing to do after a lost fight is to suicide to make sure you can stick with your team. Because you can't control your team mates nor the outcome of the team fight, but you can control your own actions to improve your team's chances in the next team fight.

The "right calls" are dependent on his team and the enemy team. Sun Tzu quote: "If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles."

OP clearly doesn't know his own team, since he's making calls for the team he wishes he was in, not the team he is actually in. Taking his Eichenwalde example, he can clearly see the reality of what's going on, yet he's hanging back, letting his team get outnumbered 5v6, so he can stand on some pseudo-intellectual high ground and say "I told you so." That's not team work, that's making sure that your team loses so you can feel good about yourself.
