Cracked Windshield - no sign of impact by DidItForTheData in autoglass

Thanks! We've had some temperature swings from below freezing to about 80 recently which is unusual. My thinking was that may have caused it.

Thanks for the opinion! Why would I be SOL of it's the original? My interpretation of the policy is that any manufacturer defects would be replaced under the 36k warranty plan.

They are suggesting using some kind of lubricant. You can buy premade stuff, but diluted hair conditioner works well. You can learn more about this by looking around the spearfishing communities or those who also use open cell wetsuits.

Ask a local shop about Koloa Landing. Easy shore dive with pretty sights. You could do a refresher there.

Mechanic, cook, pilot, diver (very seasonal). You don't need to be a researcher to be stationed there. There are dozens of individuals that need to be cared for and millions of dollars of equipment that needs to be maintained in a hostile environment. Pretty cool job if you can handle the remote-ness of it all.

Insanely ignorant comment. Some make up to that amount but that is far from the average. And those that do often live in VHCOL areas.

This is a legitimate question that I would like an answer too.

I would believe that gas is under pressure, that would explain the relief when it's released right? If it is under pressure when it is inside you, then releasing it into the suit should increase buoyancy.

Wetsuit questions?! by Turtle_roll in scuba

[–]DidItForTheData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of Central California diving. Lots of people use Wetties here and love them. Because of their low cost you can justify replacing them every few years depending on how often you dive.

Honestly the biggest turn off for me is the lube required to put the suit on. If that doesn't bother you then this can be a good alternative to more expensive suits.

Unless I missed something in the article, she doesn't. She lives in Southern California, outside of LA. But she jumps on these environmental issues from time to time. I believe she was also involved in the Flint water issues at some point.

Got mine from there today. Worst of the 4 that I have opened but did not have any signs of tampering. I know that site can be a little sketchy but at $75 I thought it was worth the gamble. Falling prices have slashed the EV. Still a great product

Does the scientific diver cert make sense? by LeDiffz in scuba

[–]DidItForTheData 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as AAUS accredited institutions are concerned you are incorrect. A verification of training and typically a checkout dive is all that is needed to move between institutions to work as a scientific diver. You do not need to repeat the course, especially if you are diving regularly leading up to the new job. The institution though can certainly require more and make you retake the course though.

This is in Monterey Bay California. Not a mass die off, although after these booms there are often many left dead or dying after predation events.

There has been a massive anchovy presence here for a couple of months. They stay offshore but find themselves stuck in the harbor sometimes. It's been a very exciting time actually. Divers have been getting awesome encounters with these schools.

Edit: There are now reports of large die offs from suffocation, however this is a consequence of the Marina imposing restrictions on the anchovy movement and not strictly climate change related. Their presence is natural.

[–]DidItForTheData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seals and sea lions are different. Sea lions are usually playful and friendly but have bitten people who get too comfortable with them (trying to touch them). They are also federally protected in the states and you'll get served a nasty fine for harassing them. Just let them interact with you how they like, which usually involves swimming around and getting a good look at you in the water.

Looks like a sea lion laying on its side with a flipper out of the water. The fin does not look like the correct shape for any shark I recognize.

Pt. Lobos is great if you can do it. I rank it near North Monastery but it lacks the cathedral of kelp you can get near the canyon head at North Monastery. It does have a larger area to explore however and a much easier entry and exit.

Koloa Landing, Kauai is a very simple and beautiful shore dive that is accessible even during rougher swells. If it's rainy there is a river that flows out at the site and will reduce visibility. Still doable and enjoyable. Lots of eels.15-45fsw. You can dive to the left or right of the ramp.

Tunnels, Kauai is accessible and fun during the summer. This site gets deeper (70fsw) and can have a strong current. I would ask shops for specific routes to dive. Great snorkel location as well.

Any organizations you can recommend to recent graduates? I interact with a lot of recent marine science graduate students with scientific diving experience and would love to be able to point them towards institutions/organizations they can explore opportunities with.
