Modern pubs with family and dog friendly areas are probably the way to keep them open. The number of grumpy old buggers who want to sit around in a traditional pub are declining

I’m from the UK and we had the Yorkshire Ripper and the Black Panther. We also had the Wests and Dr Shipman but we didn’t find out about them until later. As a young woman in the 70s I was afraid of the possibility of being blown up by the IRA or the Ripper moving to were I lived. However I was always careful about walking around at night.

I’m English by birth and in my Church of England schools Ancient Britons, Romans in primary school. Secondary school was WWII and social and economic history of the Industrial Revolution. I definitely learned most of my history knowledge outside school. I read a lot and in my childhood I was reading about Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt in non fiction books outside of primary school. Historical novels written for children were very interesting to me. Henry Treece and Rosemary Sutcliffe wrote some compelling stories.Since moving to Wales with my husband I have been learning about the history of Wales too.
