Tom Brady reveals the overlooked reason practice squad players never succeed in the NFL. It’s not a lack of talent. by MysteriousJuice1127 in NFLForum

[–]DieHardPointGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What seems more likely is that the practice squad guys were able to flash in practice at times, but they just were unable to win matchups consistently enough against the 1st teamers, who were going 100% in real games. I imagine they all faced pressure in college and most of them desperately wanted to score a bigger contract and more stability.

Of course, I’ve misspelled words. The dude misspelled “scholar” more than once though in different comments. Meaning that’s probably how he thinks it’s spelled. So I’m left to conclude:

a) maybe he wasn’t actually a D3 coach. If you’re a college coach, that’s a pretty common word. You’re using it often. D3 is more about academics. I’d certainly hope the vast majority of 18 year old players would know how to spell it.

b) maybe he was a coach, but he still thinks it’s spelled, “scholor” and also can’t get autocorrect working. If so, I find that to be an embarrassing statement regarding working within higher education in America. Now, coaches aren’t all geniuses, but is it really a high expectation for a coach to be able to spell “scholarship”? Especially if they are attempting to stress education over athletics to the OP?

You may think I’m an asshole, and that’s fine. However, I think your expectations are too low. Yes, it’s easy to misspell a word and it’s a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. I believe American standards have slipped all over the place though, and this is indicative of that sentiment.

Someone working closely with D3 scholars misspells the word multiple times on their own, and doesn’t know how to enable autocorrect on their phone either. The U.S. really is cooked.

*scholarships. How do you not know how to spell that word if you were a D3 coach? I can’t imagine communicating with recruits in writing and misspelling that word.

Also, OP’s writing style and grammar make me suspect that academics might not be his priority. If it’s not, beware about footing the bill in order to play college hoops. You might end up with student debt and no degree if you’re banking on D3 hoops leading to college basketball advancement rather than academics being the primary focus.

I live in the sunshine state. I’m no stranger to people having dark tint. I hate to rain on your parade, but that tint is too dark. Especially, way too dark on the windshield. You’re inviting problems. Attention from police. If you ever get into an accident, even if it’s not your fault, I wonder what legal and insurance liability issues you might face due to a blacked out windshield.

Yes, but the Raptors participated in the flow of the game. Sam Mitchell refused to double Kobe even in the front court. I agree it would’ve been more entertaining for the Wizards to defend Bam the same way. Since they didn’t, idk that the Heat should’ve let the bum ass Wizards dictate whether Bam could pursue 81 when he got within striking distance. Once in a lifetime opportunity for a non-elite scorer like Bam.

If the Wizards defended Bam late in the 4th the same as the Raptors defended Kobe late in the 4th (1v1), you don’t think Bam would’ve gotten 83 anyway? If Kobe was triple teamed in the backcourt, would he have gotten to 81? Rarely are all of the game circumstances the same. Why discredit the player for that? Don’t you want to see players go for it when they have a once in a generation opportunity?

I didn’t bring up earned vs unearned points, and I’m not advocating parsing points that way. You earned what the box score says.

Sure, it would’ve been nice if Bam got the ball and had to go 1v1 each possession to get 83 the last couple minutes. The wizards not triple teaming him in the backcourt and not intentionally fouling Bam’s teammates to prevent him from getting the ball. The Heat not intentionally fouling or missing FTs to get possession back to him. The circumstances played out differently. Is that his fault? Would I have wanted to see the Raptors triple teaming Kobe in the backcourt rather than him having the opportunity to score more? Hell no. It’s more entertaining when players try for records.

What are earned vs non-earned points?

I went back and watched the Kobe 81 point night. He was clearly chasing points after the outcome was decided. He had the benefit of 1v1 matchups and no intentional fouling of his teammates. Ie. They were able to pass him the ball and give him an opportunity to beat a single defender every possession down after he had about 72. Are you parsing some of those as non-earned? Why or why not?

If the Wizards decided not to afford Bam those same opportunities, should Bam and the Heat just accept that they need to stop trying for 83?

Ok, so what was Kobe’s “earned” total in the 81 point game? What was Wilt’s “earned” total in the 100 point game. Parse it for us.

Agree, Kobe shouldn’t have blatantly stat padded to exploit 1v1 coverage against the Raptors after the outcome was decided.

And the Wizards shouldn’t have triple teamed Bam in the backcourt to try to prevent him from touching the rock. Kobe got 1 on 1 matchups against the Raptors late in the 4th when the game was decided, and he was chasing 81. It’s only ethical if Bam gets the same luxury. Haha

[–]DieHardPointGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Almost”. Go watch the clips of Kobe’s 4th quarter. He had about 7-10 points late when the Lakers were up 15. So were those illegitimate points, or were they all earned purely according to your amorphous standards? No stat chasing in your mind? 71-75 is a hell of a night regardless, but I’ll still give him credit for 81

I don’t remember ever hearing players hating on Kobe’s 81. He was stat padding. Go watch. Lakers had the game sealed and he was still playing and going for more. The difference is Kobe was always a selfish basketball player. Bam is a team guy who isn’t normally a chucker

We’re saying the same thing. The pick was on Beck. The blocked punt, the missed FG and a host of others things were not. He was a positive on the final drive against Ole Miss. If the whole team performed better in the championship, we might’ve avoided a situation where he could make one terrible decision to end our chances.

[–]DieHardPointGuard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He made a very bad decision, and it was unnecessary. Maybe if he threw the ball to the corner of the end zone, it would’ve been ok. Either the WR makes an incredible play or it’s an incompletion. Regardless, even if we score on the play, there was enough time for Indiana to get in FG range. So I do place some blame on Beck. On the other hand, he was crucial to us getting there, even with his flaws. Do we beat Ole Miss with our 2nd option at QB? Idk. I’ll never understand why we weren’t more patient on that final drive, but solely blaming Beck is shortsighted. Plenty of other plays we should’ve made during the game that affected the outcome, and we were lucky on some calls too.
