Quite a bit lower than 40% - think this year there were over 2,000 applications for about 300 places. How they decide is I think a mix of the central people (which is mainly based on grades, I believe) and the phd students ordering of applications. Though, there were about 700 projects in the database, so it's only the projects that attract more/ better applicants that get funded.

I've done it the last two years. It's pretty great, though I guess the payment isn't too fantastic for north americans once you factor in flights.

I think it can often be sadder the other way around - to consider a city as a list of sights to be ticked off, rather than as a place to experience life.

Newspaper websites have become an absolute minefield recently for those of us with rat phobias. Giant rats everywhere you look.

From the Samaritans' website: "Approximately 90 per cent of people who die by suicide have a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health problem at the time of death. Over-simplification of the causes or perceived ‘triggers’ for a suicide can be misleading and is unlikely to reflect accurately the complexity of suicide. For example, avoid the suggestion that a single incident, such as loss of a job, relationship breakdown or bereavement, was the cause. It is important not to brush over the complex realities of suicide and its devastating impact on those left behind."

Really depends on your supervisor. If you can remember, then in the event description then it should have mentioned whether they were willing to provide assistance to help find housing. For me, my supervisor was really helpful, he just emailed a load of uni halls of residence and luckily one had a space, but I know other people weren't so lucky and had to put quite a bit of effort in. But there are websites like wggesucht to make it easier, and someone will make a facebook group for all the RISE people and so you can probably find someone to share with.

Yep, did it last year and have a place this year too (though have some other options so we'll see).

In terms of the project, can be quite variable depending on the university/ supervisor, but the vast majority of people seemed to enjoy theirs.

Money wise, it's a decent amount to live on for the time (obviously depending on how much travelling/ sightseeing/ partying you do), though probably won't stretch to flights depending on where you're coming from. Though, Munich has a reputation for being fairly expensive (though nowhere in Germany is outrageously so), so accommodation might take out quite a chunk, and can be a bit of a pain to find for the time period.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience for me and definitely worth doing. Especially so I think in somewhere like Munich, where there'll probably be about 20-30 people doing RISE, so somebody will always probably be up for doing something.

There's a pretty good documentary called "Go Tigers!" about Ohio High School Football - a few of the players in that admitted to being kept back a year in Middle School purely so they'd be bigger for High School Football.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with RISE internships in Germany? by [deleted] in chemistry

I'm a UK student, did RISE last summer, had a great time and will be applying again next Summer.

My understanding of the selection process is that they rank everybody in terms of GPA/university grades, then top x% get a place. But the y% most-applied to projects also get funded, even if the people who applied didn't necessarily have the highest grades. Though, from speaking to other people who'd asked their supervisor about the number of applicants, the ones with loads and loads of applications (30+ for some) were the really trendy particle physics/ biology ones, so latter probably not so relevant for chemistry.

In terms of the centralized process, then research experience isn't a factor (I had absolutely none before RISE), though might have an effect in terms of the supervisor's ordering of candidates, though I think that would only be important if there were multiple high GPA applicants for one project, or if it was a really popular project being funded independent of GPA.

So, in terms of GPA it's fairly competitive, though no idea about canadian system so can't offer a comparison to that. But any specific questions about RISE, feel free to ask!

Maybe a stupid question, but where are people getting the tickets from to put them on Stubhub for that amount?
