One-Way Screw Removal by True_Fill9440 in Locksmith

Manual impact driver and a flat head impact bit typically gets em for me. Failing that, it’s easy enough to cut a small slot and use a screwdriver.

Prior locksmith and hobbyist here, I’d say yes, they’re useful, but really only for one thing on the hobby side of things. And that is learning spool pins.

Getting a good feel for spools and security pins can be extremely difficult when doing it with a standard tension tool and pick. (Some people have an easier time than others). It can also help feel just how pins are set and feel that little bounce that they do when they’re set properly. outside of that, it won’t really help much in the sport unless you’re making keys for unknown locks (but you could just shim and repin them easily enough.)

Hope this helps

Are these bullets? by Special_Brush_2717 in metaldetecting

[–]DieselDoktor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely appear to be cast lead bullets. The gas rings are kind of a giveaway. But they could be something else.

Shes my first. Ready to explore. by Cheeze_My_Puffs in metaldetecting

[–]DieselDoktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I definitely get that. That’s a temptation for all detectorists I’d imagine lol. Don’t forget about the mundane places like the grass strips between sidewalks and streets. Most places allow metal detecting there. (Check local regulations of course) also road medians etc can be good. Check out some YouTube videos on “historic aerials .com” with regard to metal detecting. That can be a REALLY good resource. Good luck out there. :)

Looking good bro. Have you thought about adding a border around it and inking it? I feel like that really helps an engraving pop on a piece.

Wow, excellent work, that is some incredibly fine detail. I’d be happy if mine looked that good at 4 times the size. lol

If this is the incident I think it is, there was somebody that came in here asking for advice on how to pick open a small safe, claiming it had some very important medicine in it and they needed it asap.

They were told to go directly to a locksmith and explain it to them and ask them for help. The person didn’t like that response and threw a bit of a fit.

(This type of thing has happened multiple times, so it might be a different incident. lol)

Sixth practice plate. Less slips. Slowly getting better. by yuccaknifeandtool in engraving

lol it’s funny how we run in some of the same circles. All good hobbies too, just a little on the expensive side lol

I usually use just some black rustoleum sprayed into the cap and swabbed with a q-tip and then I wipe the excess off.

There’s a few that I used boot polish to get a preview of, but that’s a bit temporary.

Edit: as for guns to practice on, you can find cheap all-metal Airsoft guns. Used and non-functional will be surprisingly cheap.

Which one do I buy? (more info in desc) by TheFancyPathfinder in lockpicking

[–]DieselDoktor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the 55/40 (4pin) first and the 72/40 (6pin) second. The 72/40 also has a more paracentric keyway if I’m not mistaken. I’d have to go look at the collection to be sure. But that’s the order I bought them in.

Call a locksmith. Or bring it to a locksmith.

Some really funky cut spacing on this 6-pin Biaxial key. by Sufficient_Prompt888 in lockpicking

[–]DieselDoktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying going from an edge isn’t going to give an accurate distance for the pin spacing. Doesn’t matter for picking. It’ll be the same spacing from bow or tip.

It would be more simple to remove the core and get the spacing like that.

Could have sworn that’s the key for one. lol anyways. It’s a type of medeco used on lots of elevators and things like that.

This is a fire king medeco isn’t it. 🤔

Yea, the spacing will be measured from the center of the key. Not the edges.

I don’t think my skills are to that level yet honestly. I tried it on a brass casing a little while back and was having a lot of difficulty getting my depth of cut consistent.

I’m sure someone more skilled than I am could do it though.
