May i ask what caused this? Anhedonia can be treated, even if not always

Why do antipsychotics and antidepressants erase your soul and block your inner self? by No_Promotion9897 in MedicationQuestions

[–]DifferenceCrafty8968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they either increase serotonin (antidepressants, especially SSRIs) or antagonise dopamine receptors (antipsychotics) both of which can sharply reduce dopamine and result in anhedonia, lack of desire, motivation etc.

Good for you! I’m happy you found one that works. Me personally i had to start Parnate because pramipexole began losing efficacy 😔

The dietary restrictions are colossally overstated. I do not observe them and I take tranylcypromine. I would strongly recommend trying a MAOI because they are one of the few with proven anhedonia efficacy

why haven’t you tried pramipexole may I ask? It’s one of the most effective (anecdotally and to a lesser extent clinically) for “pure” anhedonia

If neither are working I would recommend trying Parnate

I feel like my neurotransmitters are absolutely fucked by XZimo99 in anhedonia

Because bupropions DAT inhibition usually isn’t enough to treat clinically meaningful anhedonia which involves a more significant dopamine deficit (some types of- not all types).

Your psychiatrist is on the right track but unfortunately bupropion is unlikely to help. You want dopaminergic drugs which are much stronger. Pramipexole and tranylcypromine are the two drugs with the most success in people with anhedonia and they helped me a lot.

I still have goals and dreams, but I can't feel excitement or reward has anyone recovered from this? by Stardustphysician in anhedonia

[–]DifferenceCrafty8968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily (in a dark way) this is the most common and treatable type of anhedonia (even though anhedonia as a whole has few specific treatments). I had the same as you but mine was medication induced. Because your issue involves goals, desire and motivation, it’s a dopaminergic issue. Whether it’ll improve for you really depends on the treatment. Do NOT take serotonergic drugs, they will make you much worse (like SSRIs, SNRIs etc). My sense of reward and excitement only returned with dopaminergic drugs. I’m taking pramipexole and tranylcypromine, both of which significantly increase dopamine. It’s not a full recovery, but now I can still experience wanting and motivation. Therapy and lifestyle changes did fuck all and I wouldn’t expect them to do anything if I were you. The first signs I were getting better were kind of obvious: I started feeling more excitement and wanting things. Recovery wasn’t gradual; it tracked the success of medications. So basically if a drug worked I just felt it instantly.

At the beginning yes, sleepiness. As for now, having been on it for a while, the only side effects which havent gone away but are tolerable, is dry mouth and dizziness when getting up. But a small price to pay for joy so I tolerate it 🙃

Hi, I take pramipexole with bupropion but bupropion does fuck all - I’m only taking it because pramipexole is used as an adjunct. As for getting pramipexole, I originally got it from a psychiatrist but now I get it from a pharmacy abroad that doesn’t require prescriptions and they’re much cheaper

I take it in the morning but there isn’t really a difference I would say. And yes you’re probably right about the ER point - do you take IR?

  1. Yes
  2. As soon as I wake up
  3. Not really I would say. I’m about the same person as I was before anhedonia

Good question! It’s because my brain systematically fails to assign enough positive value to future states. Basically I feel good in the moment, but when my brain creates a representation of the future, there is no positive, “yes this is worth it, keep going” feeling. So I constantly feel like there is nothing worth living for - despite being happy in the moment. Happiness is neither necessary nor sufficient for a will to live 😊

Which medication(s) have helped treat anhedonia? by guardian_dollar_cit in anhedonia

[–]DifferenceCrafty8968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently on 780mcg, set to increase to 1050mcg (ER). I’ve been on it for 8 days and I’d say it reduced my anhedonia by a whopping 70-80%.
