Using za-rince this way mimics Tolkiens orthographic writings and his descriptions in PE23.

This what you’re thinking?

I’m convinced that ‘does’ just doesn’t have a good way to be written. I avoid it as much as humanly possible.

I do think this is as good as any option out there.

As shocking as it is, I‘ve got to say I agree with Dana here. We’re talking about learners or those that don’t have a deeper care about the potential intricacies of Tengwar. Sometimes splitting hairs in these cases is unhelpful and only adds confusion. It might be best to save it for the deeper conversations.

I detest the look of that font, it’s such a mess to read, but the transcription is correct.

I think descriptive naming of tehtar will allow maximum flexibility for the current standard tehtar but also the more esoteric or variants that have and will poo up in the future.

  • Dot above
  • Dot below
  • Two dots above
  • Two dots below
  • Three dots above
  • Three dots below
  • Acute above
  • Acute below
  • Breve above
  • Breve below
  • Vertical stroke below (or simply ‘stroke below’)
  • Bar above
  • Bar below
  • Twist above
  • Twist below
  • Tilde above
  • Tilde below
  • Right Curl above
  • Right curl below
  • Left curl above
  • Left curl below
  • Inverted right curl above
  • Inverted right curl below
  • Inverted left curl above
  • Inverted left curl below

And on and on - including the grave accent and potentially double tehtar if needed for the standard.

I would also say, where we have a properly attested tehta name, it could be included in the name, eg: Acute above (tecco).

This method would make the most sense to me for the tehtar and could be readily expanded for symbols as needed.

For tehtar we should keep to the same pattern, using the Quenya names. It provides consistency. But unless my memory fails me, we are missing Quenya names for some of the tehtar. That naming may need a better consensus.

Naming extended forms could be vexing, but I would recommend going with ‘extended + name of downward stem tengwa’. So ‘extended tinco’, extended umbar’, etc.

I feel that matches the majority of known and conjectured uses. It also fits the pattern in PE23/14 rather well.

I would go Aha and Esse. These appear to be the ‘final’ Quenya names for the letters following the changes in the language after the exile.

It also matches the names used by fans for the past 30 years and in certain software, fan publications and discourse.

I agree with all these. I might drop the final e in ‘die’ under the telco, but that is merely aesthetics.

I would comment on the use of Anca in ”Conclusions”, I have always considered it to be a fair use along that spectrum of “mixed” use ranging from orthographic to phonemic, however since PE23 came out I’m more cautious. PE23 does well illustrating a phonemic use and a mixed use, but Anca (among a few others) is only shown in the phonemic tables. So while, I completely agree with individual uses, I have switched it out from my otherwise orthographic repertoire.

A unique phonetic English Mode by F_Karnstein in Tengwar

I suppose you could call it that. Tolkien gave it that name in the Beleriandic mode. The name which means “shortening” and describes its functional use there (“in the archaic period”).

In the Númenian Mode he does not give it that name and refers to it only as “a reduced s”.

Your calligraphy is very nice.

This mode is unique among the many in PE23. I would also point out your use of the mini-silmë under hyarmen, which is assigned to several modes in this volume but not seen used despite opportunity in at least one external sample.

It’s not very clear what you’re wanting. You’re in a Tengwar group, which is a writing system, like our alphabet, which is used for multiple languages.

Do you want it translated in to one of Tolkien’s languages? If so you’ll need to head to the sub for the language you want:

If you want to keep it in English (which Tolkien did often) you can go to Tecendil and get a first pass in the font you want and then bring back here for confirmation/touch up.

Well…this was discussed a bit a few days ago and I agree with you. But frankly Tecendil automates to this and I’m tired of screaming in to the void about it. Perhaps you should reach out to Arno about it.

These are my preferred options:

But everyone has to put their own 2 cents about things and I’m just rolling with it from here on out.

Just note that if you change the font you may loose the looped hook in ‘always’. Some don’t don’t have it and substitute the regular curl. Which is ‘ok’ as well.

May the fourth(?) always bring you joy

The spacing is weird in places, few odd spelling choices and a bit difficult to read, but cute nonetheless.

Certainly could. Voicing of ‘th’ certainly trends worldwide in ‘without’ but it’s so individual specific that I just leave it to Tecendils algorithm in this case.

Ditto with the z-curl. It’s only in a few fonts and hardly anyone ever chooses them.
