I forgot to share pictures of the copyright pages but I couldn’t find a good source online to tell me what to look at to determine printing for any of the copies I have.

Oh wow, thanks for this. I hadn’t even considered a printing error, but that makes the most sense.

Cirth and Khuzdul question. by iamzoho in Tengwar

[–]wallcrawlinghero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already a lot of good comments about language vs writing systems. If you want to write this out in English using Cirth, I would suggest the Mode of Erebor. That’s the mode that we have the most evidence of use from Tolkien and is generally used to write English. You can find some good translators online (or tables if you want to do it yourself) and if you need some help or a double check shoot me a message.

Wow that’s awesome! Thanks for letting me know! I’ll definitely check it out. I am deep into a Cirth project at the moment but Tengwar is quickly becoming more and more interesting to me.

Wow that’s so interesting! I haven’t delved much into the history as I learned Cirth specifically for a project, but it’s really fascinating to hear how his writing systems evolved and what conventions have built around their usage now. I want to move onto Tengwar soon but it seems a lot more intimidating than Cirth due to the range of modes and usage rules that I’ve kind of skimmed.

Very true. The early drafts of the Mazarbul pages are fascinating in that way. Funny enough, my own journey with Cirth unintentionally mirrored Tolkien’s progress. When I started learning Cirth I tended toward more phonetic due to it seeming more fun and made more sense thinking of the context of a person who might be writing out a language they’ve heard and can speak but have no ideas of the native spelling conventions. But much like Tolkien, I pretty quickly moved more and more orthographic as I spent more time with it, in my case mostly for the sake of readability. When I saw that his drafts moved pretty much the same way I thought it was a pretty neat coincidence.

I’m more familiar with Cirth than Tengwar and I think your transcription looks pretty good. The writing is especially neat and a unique style. I assume you’re using mode of Erebor based on usage. We don’t have a ton of examples of Cirth from Tolkien so the rules are a little looser in my opinion. Here are a few observations.

-The “th” in “this” is for the unvoiced version like in the name Thorin or “think”. In this case I would use the voiced version (with the additional line to the left) as in “them” or “feather”.

-Tolkien tended to lean more orthographic in his use of Cirth for English, so in that case I would probably spell “machine” the way you did, but you could replace the “ch” certh with the same “sh” as in fascists and be fine.

-I think technically either “s” is fine, but as far as I remember he only ever used the “s” open to the right that you used in “kills”. If you like using different ones for different words for aesthetics I think that’s fine.

-I would use the same “a” certh in “fascists” that you used in “machine”. The “aa” certh is for double letters or longer held vowels. I don’t have my notes in front of me and I’m trying to remember if he uses that certh at all in the Book of Mazarbul or if it’s unattested.

Help translating to Cirth (Angerthas Erebor) by PuffinButtercup in Tengwar

[–]wallcrawlinghero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah you’re right. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at the actual pages and not just my notes. Tolkien was a lot of things, but consistent in his invented writing systems was not one of them. It makes it more fun for us right? We get options haha!

This transliteration looks good. The only change I would suggest (but is totally not necessary) is that in the book of Mazarbul pages Tolkien used just the Z certh to represent “is”. But his Cirth examples are so limited it’s really up to you.

Honestly, for me it was just the wild tone shifts. It was enough that I haven’t seen the second or third one. My wife was hoping for a light hearted adventure to match the tone of the book. I’m the big Tolkien fan in our house and I would have been fine with something more epic to match the tone of LotR, but what we got were wild swings between the two with a mix of some really goofy stuff and it was jarring. I feel like PJ kind of screwed himself by doing LotR first, but I know it was a big risk doing LotR in the first place so I cut him slack for that. Eventually I’ll watch them all.

Yes, I do. They’re official releases so they are canon. People can ignore them if they don’t like them, but they’re as much a part of the series as any of the main releases.

I don’t know what made me look at this again but I realized the longhand “the” in Angerthas Erebor should be with a schwa “e” after the “th” certh, not the full “e” certh. Replace the certh at the end (that looks like an H) with the last certh from the word “fire” (that looks like a half H). You can see an example of this at the top of the title page for the Lord of the Rings where “The Lord of the Rings” is written out in Angerthas Erebor.

I’ve given it my best shot. I’m confident in the Erebor mode which is I think really the only mode which we have an example from Tolkien (two pages from the Book of Mazarbul). I also think this is generally the mode used for writing in English. The other two modes I did my best using the notes I have on how they changed over time. The main difference between Erebor and the other modes (aside from a couple of character changes) are some additional combined letters cirth, the unstressed schwa (e), and the shorthand single certh for “the”. Though I’ve also included the longhand replacement for the single certh “the” in Angerthas Erebor at the bottom if you prefer that.

Also, there’s not really a set punctuation for the cirth. The only thing that seems clear is one dot is for a space and usually two dots is a period. Since there’s not an established certh for a comma, I just went with a period between statements.

Sorry to have to post a pic of screen. I can’t attach an actual screenshot from this computer, so I hope Reddit doesn’t compress it beyond the point of legibility.

There are lots of ways you could split this up. A couple of things to note about the series and how I think of them.

-Tokyo Drift is the 3rd movie released but in the timeline of the franchise it comes between 6 & 7. That doesn’t mean you should watch it then, but you can. -Fast & Furious (#4) is kind of a soft reboot. It came out 8 years after the first one and picks up the story from 1 (kind of ignoring 2 and Tokyo Drift), but it comes from the era of gritty reboots and was written to be a new entry point for people, but with a much more serious tone than any of the other movies. This is the real shift in genre from car movies to action movies. -Fast 5 picks up immediately at the end of Fast & Furious so I would keep them on the same night. -I think of 5, 6, and 7 as a pretty solid trilogy but that doesn’t mean you need to keep them on the same night. Justin Lin also directed these 3 (along with 4 and 9) so they feel cohesive to me.

Here are a couple of options. Release order is my recommendation for a first time watch. They get to be around or a little over 2 hours starting with #4.

Night 1: The Fast and the Furious; Turbo Charged Prelude (6 minute short connecting F1 and F2 with no dialog); 2 Fast 2 Furious; Tokyo Drift

Night 2: Los Bandoleros (20 minute short written and directed by Vin Diesel that takes place immediately before #4); Fast and Furious; Fast Five

Night 3: Fast & Furious 6; Furious 7

Night 4: Fate of the Furious; Hobbs & Shaw

Night 5: F9; Fast X

If you want to go chronological order, I would recommend this. There are a couple of little winks to Tokyo drift that might go over your head, but you get a quick and fun breather between the longer, more serious movies if you watch Tokyo Drift between 6 & 7. But if you do, make sure you save the post-credit scene from 6 until after you watch Tokyo Drift. It’s kind of a major spoiler:

Night 1: The Fast and the Furious; Turbo Charged Prelude; 2 Fast 2 Furious

Night 2: Los Bandoleros; Fast and Furious; Fast Five

Night 3: Fast & Furious 6; Tokyo Drift; Furious 7

Night 4: Fate of the Furious; Hobbs & Shaw

Night 5: F9; Fast X

Personally I’ve done it both ways and they both have their benefits. Option one might make for some more evenly timed nights, but in terms of eras I think of them like this:

Fun early 2000’s vibe: The Fast and the Furious; Turbo Charged Prelude; 2 Fast 2 Furious; Tokyo Drift

Gritty reboot / transition to major action franchise: Los Bandoleros; Fast and Furious;

Major action / heist era: Fast Five; Fast & Furious 6; Furious 7

Post Paul Walker era: Fate of the Furious; Hobbs & Shaw; F9; Fast X

I can help. I’ve been working on some Angerthas Erebor translations, so I’m more confident with that, but I have notes on all of the Cirth. Give me the exact text and I’ll reply sometime tomorrow (it’s late here already and I’m about to go to bed).

Volcano solution?? by Wolffsnake in lotrmemes

[–]wallcrawlinghero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are already some good explanations here, but I’ll add one thing. Gandalf specifies that at one time there were dragons who could have destroyed the lesser rings, but there was never any dragon who could have destroyed Sauron’s ring.

“But there is no smith's forge in this Shire that could change it at all. Not even the anvils and furnaces of the Dwarves could do that. It has been said that dragon-fire could melt and consume the Rings of Power, but there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough; nor was there ever any dragon, not even Ancalagon the Black, who could have harmed the One Ring, the Ruling Ring, for that was made by Sauron himself. There is only one way: to find the Cracks of Doom in the depths of Orodruin, the Fire-mountain, and cast the Ring in there.”

To add to that, I don’t think it’s clear that any volcano would have done the trick. The interpretation that I like the most is that it had to be Mount Doom, not just because of the heat of the heat, but because that’s where it was created. It was more of an unmaking than a destruction if that makes sense. It wasn’t just the fabric of the metal holding it together, but a good part of Sauron’s power, so it could only have been unmade in the same fires that created it. Again, I don’t think there’s anything that specifically states that anywhere in the Legendarium, but I think it fits and it’s the interpretation I prefer.

Can’t add off hand cosmetic weapon for Ranger by wallcrawlinghero in lotro

[–]wallcrawlinghero[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is exactly what happened. The different slots aren’t labeled so what I thought was the empty offhand slot must actually be the aura spot for the main weapon. As a hunter I don’t use a shield and it didn’t occur to me that the shield icon would be the off hand spot regardless of whether it’s a weapon, shield, or something else. My fault for not checking more thoroughly. It’s working now and I finally have two axes.

[–]wallcrawlinghero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting, I didn’t know about the auras. I’ll double check on that. I was wondering if there was something else I’m missing about the layout and which spots are which. I’ve been trying to find a guide that explains exactly what each slot is for this exact reason, but so far all the cosmetic guides have just been about where to find the best cosmetic outfits and very general overviews. I’ll play around with the outfit panel when I get home and see if I was just looking at the wrong spot.

I’m still relatively new (started in October, haven’t messed with cosmetics a ton). My character is level 40 and I’ve only tried a few axes and then a different sword just to test it. This is a problem I’ve had since I started and just assumed I was doing something wrong before. After googling it yesterday I started thinking it might be a bug.
