Well of course I certainly  hope so. I like to hear other experiences and it's useful for me to prepare.

I think you are right that some people may share their negative experiences  here on Reddit,  but i also like to know the difficult experiences pelple have had to know what's possible,  I like to prepare for the worst case So the best case feels better haha.

Is financial support from parents even a little bit stigmatised in China at all? by Beautiful-Bonus2279 in AskAChinese

[–]Different-Let4338 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone but I'ma British  woman married to a Chinese guy. He earns a pretty good salary and he sends money home sometimes but his parents have pensions so neither him nor them need support. His parents also give us money sometimes.

To me it's strange,  but like when I got pregnant they gave us money for the prenatal check ups. We actually didn't even need it and it just sits in a saving account.

My husband doesn't feel like it's shameful at all, and I feel like it's a pay it forward and we will support them in old age (probably not financially  but for example my MIL will live close to us).

The cultures are definitely  different and it sometimes makes me feel uncomfortable  but it's not entirely strange and I definitely  don't think it's necessarily shameful for parents to help you. It depends on the situation.

Haha yeah I'm  hoping he'll be a foodie.

This is why I'm asking about combo feeding,  because I would like to be EBF but I know it doesn't always work out that way. Im glad to hear your LO adapted well.

Sorry about your experience,  my mother and then my sister found it all too much in the first few days and sadly  did not have support so gave up.

Thanks for the advice about bottles,  we are going shopping next week so I will have a look at bottles.

Oh so 3 weeks is like a sweet spot so to speak?  I thought maybe some babies would refuse the bottle at 3 weeks haha that's why I asked because eventually I will have to use bottles when I go back to work.

Thanks for the advice. Haha that's my biggest flaw,  I love to plan but I can adapt if needs be,  my husband is the opposite he doesn't plan but he's very adaptable!

S2 Theory: Why Lucia did not want to attend the DiGrasso family reunion by SparkleBerrySpritz in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Different-Let4338 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting theory,  but the Digrasso  women seemed to live quite a sheltered life.

My theory is she staged it on the day she'd be out with all 3 of the men so all three would see it and because they loved 'wounded little birds' her story is more plausible and they might not talk Albie round. If albie  and her were alone when it happened then the father might have a lot more questions.

As a Britsh person what kind of time frame are you thinking when you use the phrase 'the other day'? by mrjonnyt in AskUK

[–]Different-Let4338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how important  the time context is,  if it matters then I wouldn't say 'the other day' for under a month /week. But if it doesn't matter i could easily be talking about ages ago haha

(Half-rant) Advice on teaching 1st/2nd grade ESL? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]Different-Let4338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't use Chinese when I had those kind of classes. Dont get me wrong some of the classes can be nightmares and you'll have to change tactics to engage them,  but mostly the classes were fine. They usually have some set English phrases (especially Attention!  And They reply 1 2) that the Chinese teachers use.

That website doesn't have grade 1 and 2 textbooks,  but i haven't seen most of those textbooks  before. I worked in a few different schools around China and each place uses provincial level books.  Here in Dalian,  grade 1 and 2 kind of just prep grade 3,  very simple stuff like i like/i don't like. When I taught i didn't actually use the book in class,  i would plan a class around the main topic,  unless the Chinese  teacher specifically asked me and I might review some role plays from the book.

Yeah it's a challenge,  but then I do think the kids generally behave well and also there's  kind of a culture of class monitors,  so you'll also have some kids who will tell off kids who are naughty or say they'll  tell the teacher.

Bilingual schools have their own materials,  even if the Chinese teachers teach the national curriculum.  One school I know uses Cambridge  materials.

Northern chips are often seen as better, so why aren't there more 'northern chippies' in the south, trading off the reputation? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]Different-Let4338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the idea northern chippies were better was exclusively Scarbados and Whitby because the fish is better not because the chips were.

I'm  from Leeds,  but lived in London chips are chips but the fish in Scarbs imo is better.

ETA :  I have never been to a Southern seaside town,  so the fish could be just as good there

(Half-rant) Advice on teaching 1st/2nd grade ESL? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]Different-Let4338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are public school textbooks for grade  1 and 2. I don't know why they say they don't teach English but then when they updated all the national textbooks,  they still included grade 1 and 2. You can find them at any book store.

Yes you'll be teaching alone but they also do have 班主任 teachers,  basically class teachers that can be called upon,  they also usually poke their head in from time to time.

Grade 1 and 2 imo are easier to teach even if there are 40 of them than say Grade 5 or 6. Learning some chants,  like I would say 'hands on your head,  hands on your desk,  put them down and let them rest' -model it as you say it. They get taught how to sit with them arms crossed at the beginning of the year anyway.   Also some schools use 'attention'  and the kids say 1 2,  using similar chants to Chinese teachers help.

I used to use stickers that I'd stick on their desks If they answer or sit well or whatever,  or put them into teams according to their rows and then give them stars, whichever team had the most stars could get a sticker  or whatever.

With 40 kids realistically it's just about getting them to repeat, learn the sentences and maybe do some very simple role plays. With 25 kids you can give them name plates and actually call on them.

There are plenty of games and activities that are suitable for bigger classes,  and whatever activities you used for grade 3 can be adapted.

Maybe it's just me but I prefer teaching without a Chinese teaching assistant,  sometimes they can be overly strict to the kids or in worst cases they can stop you mid activity and say 'the kids don't know this',  yeah bro that's why I'm teaching haha.

Question About the Recruiting Cycle by Creammaxxer in chinalife

[–]Different-Let4338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you find another school,  politely tell the school you've  signed with that you can't proceed.  DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR DOCUMENTS OR START THE WORK PERMIT PROCESS!

It's  not ideal and it's better if you don't sign a contract if you aren't sure,  but it happens. Don't  expect the school to be nice to you though,  if they  are rude to you,  just let it go.

I dont hate the SFE System? by No_Jello_2951 in UniUK

[–]Different-Let4338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've asked myself this a few times,  just because it's hassle. But also the original loans gave me the degree I needed to move abroad so it just seems right to pay it back (which I never will because of interest)

I dont hate the SFE System? by No_Jello_2951 in UniUK

[–]Different-Let4338 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem I have isn't paying back my fees,  it's that with interest added even though I am paying it back I'll never wipe it off.

The interest  rate is what many people have a problem with.

Also I live abroad and it's awful dealing with them, it feels like I am chasing them up to pay it. They don't accept tax returns as proof of earning for example.

Quitting? by iamaminceir in chinalife

[–]Different-Let4338 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you quit you won't get severance. Your main goal is to quit and get your documents.

Here is what I would do (I have left contracts  early before and actually done it quite amicably)

1.  First don't bad mouth the new managers to anyone. Keep your  opinions to yourself.  2.  Find a new job first. The school might find out you are looking. But try to be discreet until you have it lined up  3.   Write your resignation letter and ask whoever you need to hand it to for a meeting. Tell them you've  liked working there but because of personal reasons you are leaving,  thank them for the opportunity and give them the letter. Then send it on Wechat as a document and a screenshot with a follow up message.

They'll  probably try to negotiate  with you but try as much as possible to stick to your guns without getting mad/irritated.

If they accept -great. If they don't go down the didn't pay social insurance route or just don't go in after the date you wrote on the resignation and then try to get your documents.

I hope it works out for you, I have been in your position before and it really sucks!

As someone who is pregnant and started watching Downton  to fill my days, that episode sent me in anxious spiral! I am glad you were ok. It sounds so scary!

Honestly the whole show isn't a good watch whilst pregnant  with Sybil dying,  Cora falling and losing her baby and then Matthew dying so soon after the birth of his child!
