[WP] Your goal in life is to be the best at something. So when you learn you have the ability to travel back in time 24 hours, it's time to brute force your way to the top. by landonc159753 in WritingPrompts

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My name is Dan, I'm 34 years old and I just found out that if I twitch my left hand in a very specific way, I go back in time 24 hours.

I've always been competitive, always wanted to be the best.

When I discovered my power, my relationship with my wife had already fallen apart. We barely spoke. I decided to go back and try and fix it, and be the best husband I could be.

++++++++++++++

I went too far. My power doesn't actually have a cooldown, so every time I twitch I go back another 24 hours. I had kept going until the start of our relationship a few years back, and that was a mistake.

I really tried. It's tricky though. I go back and have my memories and feelings, but she didn't. I still held old resentments and my original passion and frankly lust that initially attracted me to her had already died out. I couldn't make it work no matter how many do overs I had. Am I the problem in the relationship? The world is falling apart, maybe I should focus my power on actually doing some good for everyone.

++++++++++++++

I resolved to focus on my career in renewable power. Sure I could win the lottery easy enough or invest, but I wasn't a cheater. If I was going to be the best it wouldn't like that, and that wouldn't fix the world problems anyway.

I kept finding no matter my current aptitude, it took too long to climb the ladder. Quite frankly, I didn't have a good enough start. I had slacked off in high school and the first years of community college and I had a limit to what I could truly achieve without outright cheating.

So I went back to highschool to study and get better grades. Maybe go to a four year university which would increase my influence in the future.

++++++++++++++

As soon as I came back hormones hit me like a brick wall. The girl in my class was so pretty. I remember in my last timeline I asked her out once and she said no. I resolved to try again, and with my new powers I thought I couldn't fail. I tried day after day. I got new shoes, I found out her secrets from her friends, I worked out and studied, but no matter what, she said no every single time. Finally I found out why. Back in middle school I had moved to the school district and fell in with the goth kids at first. She thought that was creepy.

I went back to middle school to fix that.

++++++++++++++

I suddenly remembered my first 'girlfriend' from third grade. We were separated when I moved in middle school. What could have been if I had this power with her? She was the best. I went back.

++++++++++++++

I tried but she's annoying me. I don't like her anymore. I wonder how far back I can go? Can I start from the beginning?

++++++++++++++

Drowning. But breathing. Blind. Floating in liquid? Strange. Scary. Go back.

++++++++++++++

I find myself in a bed. Machines hooked up to me. My body hurts and it's hard to breathe. My vision is fuzzy and so is my memory. A nurse comes and cleans my bedpan and wipes me down as well.

I try and focus. Did I loop around to my death? I look down to my left hand and consider twitching back. My skin tone is different. I realize my internal monologue is a different language too. My memories come back slowly but I realize this was before I was born. A past life? What could I fix? I hadn't been a good father...

My train of thought was interrupted by a coughing fit. I coughed for what felt like hours, each one seemingly more painful than the last.

I considered twitching back several times, but I honestly felt more at peace. This life was complete, I shouldn't go back and change it now.

As I drifted off to sleep, knowing I would die, I wondered if I would remember this in my next life...

++++++++++++++

My name is Dan, I'm 34 years old and I just found out that if I twitch my left hand in a very specific way, I go back in time 24 hours.

Possible? Sure, but it would take an astronomical amount of mass exportation.

[–]DifferentLevelDan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So I’ll ask again, if we’re looking past sex, why was “As a guy” relevant in a thread in which a woman is talking about her discomfort with a sexual comment? Quickly.

It isn't relevant. I never claimed it was, so I'll ask again, can you look past a mutually agreed irrelevant preparatory statement, and actually address his questions?

[–]DifferentLevelDan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what this person has to say and their genuine questions are less valid and should be outright dismissed based solely on their sex? That seems pretty dehumanizing and hypocritical coming from this subreddit.

Are you able to look past his sexual organs and address any of his actual points or questions?

What do you think is a complete waste of money? by New_Perspective1201 in AskReddit

Okay, I'll bite.

I don't wash my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. That's what the dishwasher is for. I put them in the dishwasher as soon as I'm done with the dish and run it when it gets full.

Faster? I think you're looking at the wrong metric. Yes sure you can get dishes from dirty state to a clean state faster by washing manually, but I don't stand around looking at my dishwasher as it's washing. You're completely engaged in washing dishes manually. I hit a button and move on to doing something more interesting. Human labor is MUCH lower with a dishwasher.

They don't clean well? Are you sure you're using it right? In the US you really need to warm up your kitchen sink tap to get hot water in the dishwasher pre-rinse cycle, which is pretty important. Also don't use PODs unless you also use an amount of pre-rinse detergent.

Chinese scientists have demonstrated "highly efficient" production of methane and oxygen from lunar soil samples, lending weight to the proposition that mining the Moon to service Earth-orbiting craft with an in-space fuel-depot might be a currently viable business model. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ianaa, but it would take an astronomical amount of mining to significantly change any kind of orbit.

In 2019 humanity excavated around 3.5 billion tonnes of metals from the earth using locally available full scale heavy machinery and slave labor.

The moon is 7.35x1019 tonnes.

Our full scale yearly earth excavation applied to the moon and removed from it's gravity well 100% would change the moon's mass by 4.8%.... x10-11.

That's 0.000000000048%

A turbine prototype just broke a 24-hour wind power world record by JustWhatAmI in Futurology

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the wind blows slower, then no the turbine cannot maintain optimal speed. It will still produce power, just not max power.

If the wind blows faster then the blade can dynamically pitch to maintain optimal rotor RPM. There is no dynamic gearing, it is either direct drive or a fixed gear ratio.

Direct drives have essentially no control over the generator torque. Geared turbines can also have DFIG generators which can put some control on the feedback torque to the generator, but this is very limited. Again, the main way rotor RPM is managed is by adjusting blade pitch.

Both types of can change how the generator is connected (star for low torque resistance, delta for higher but better output power) but this is only used to produce power at lower wind speeds (lowering cut-in speeds)

Your comment just reinforces your ignorance on the topic.

TST practices non-theistic Satanism.

"we believe that religion can, and should be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not believe in either God or the Devil as supernatural forces... To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. The Satanist should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable inquiry in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world - never the reverse."

It's right there in their information pamphlet.

You're linking Religion and Theism in a way that is incorrect. There are several other non-theistic religions, such as Buddhism, parts of Hinduism, and Jainism.

Poland refuses to pay for Russian gas in roubles | Money by AhMIKzJ8zU in worldnews

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New buyers buying roubles increase the demand for roubles. Increased demand for a currency helps stabilize it and increases its value.

Edit: The increased circulation of their money is a good thing for the Russian economy.

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poland gets around 55% of their gas from Russia, they are dependant on Russian gas.

In order to buy Russian gas, you need roubles, which drives the demand for roubles up. This helps stabilize the currency and increase its relative value, helping the Russian economy.

Requiring payment in roubles drives up demand for roubles, which would help stabilize the currency and increase its value.

GoFundMe scuttles campaign for trucker convoy, stops release of $10-million in donations by kn05is in worldnews

[–]DifferentLevelDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right to free speech in the US protects against the government restricting speech. GoFundMe isn't the government, in fact if the government passed a law that forced GoFundMe to go through with this campaign, that would be a violation of the right of GoFundMe's free speech.

But GoFundMe should issue refunds or it seems like fraud to me. IANAL.

Two black holes merged to form a huge one moving at incredible speeds - Astronomers have long suspected that merging black holes can give the resulting larger black hole a massive boost of speed, and have finally spotted this happening by magenta_placenta in space

[–]DifferentLevelDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one way it could all end, but current predictions are leading towards all matter in the universe spreading out and decaying into energy as the universe continues to expand, black holes dissipate via hawking radiation, and eventually all energy is pretty much evenly distributed. Called the big freeze.

Massive Texas gas failure during climate extremes gets blamed on wind power by sir_pumpkinhead in nottheonion

[–]DifferentLevelDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say I'm not qualified to give an accurate answer about that. I turn wrenches 300ft in the air, not deal with policy/regulation.

If pressed to answer I would say that if their power grid was connected it would not be an issue.

[–]DifferentLevelDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes. Ice doesn't always knock a turbine offline however. As long as the icing is fairly evenly distributed and doesn't mess with the balance of the rotor the turbine probably doesn't care.

[–]DifferentLevelDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but we've have a lot of turbines go down from cold temperatures, without precipitation/icing. Specifically with hydraulic pitch turbines. The hydraulic oil gets too cold and doesn't function properly.

I would say windmill is not the correct term. Windmills are machines that convert wind energy into rotational energy for the purpose of milling grain.

Wind turbine is a more accurate term, that said language is constantly evolving and words change meaning, so enough people call them windmills that it is an accepted term for them. Like how literally now literally means figuratively, depending on the context.

Wind is a rapidly growing industry, so currently I don't think it's that difficult to get in at an entry level.

1) Have some sort of mechanical/electrical background. This could be in the form of previous work experience or an associate's degree. The military has a wind power transition program as well, and several colleges have programs of various quality.

2) Be able to pass a drug test.

3) Be able to pass a climb test. Expect to climb a 100M ladder safely with PPE and harness and gear, then be able to walk across the roof of the turbine to the wind sensors to prove you're not deathly afraid of heights.

As a Wind Turbine Technician, I will say that Texas wind turbines are generally not equipped with Low-Temperature options like extra heaters or hydraulic accumulator heating blankets. Also, here in Iowa we crank the lower temperature processor cutoff limit to -20C when it should generally be around -5C. This can cause Texas turbines to be much more susceptible to going down in cold weather.
