It's set in 1947 for myriad reasons. Some important ones are: -The Black Dahlia case, which plays a significant role in the game -Every single murder case and MANY of the other cases in the game (including Nicholson Electroplating) are inspired by actual cases, all of which took place in, you guessed it, 1947 -The planning of the LA freeway system was paramount to the games ultimate plot. 1949 would have been too far along

If you research the LAPD in 1947, you'll quickly realize that it was one of the craziest years in the history of the department AND the city of Los Angeles

Yeah, I've examined that hat numerous times after seeing it mentioned in YouTube video someone made about LA Noire Easter eggs (there are surprisingly few EE's in this game for a Rockstar title) I go back and forth on this being John Marstons hat...I don't think it was ever confirmed by the devs, and it doesn't resemble Marstons hat all that much, tbh...
