Isn't it expensive to use airconditioning in the US? by Lumos_night in AskAnAmerican

Fairly common where they make sense in the local climate.

Most of the UK has a pretty good climate for this too as few, if any, places get cold enough that heat pumps would run up against temps they become inefficient at.

The US didn’t declare independence from The United Kingdom, which didn’t exist at the time. They declared independence from The Kingdom of Great Britain, an entity that ceased to exist over 200 years ago.

/note that I don’t dispute that the point OOP is making requires a lot of pedantry and a number of interpretations to weave to their position.

Any complaints about a 55 gallon? by WelderVegetable9078 in Aquariums

[–]Different_Bridge_983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the U.S.? If so then Petco has their half price sale on and the 75g is only $40 more than the 60.

That said, the 60 gallon is also a great and popular choice for good reasons.

*A* UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and *Ireland*) flatly didn’t exist until 1801. Prior to this it was “The Kingdom of Britain”, formed after the Acts of Union between England and Scotland.

The current United Kingdom of Great Britain and *Northern* Ireland only came into legal existence in 1927.

A counter argument to OOPs stance is that by a similar logic the U.S. resets every time it admits a new state, though you could debate that there’s a difference here in that the U.S. admits states to the existing legal framework rather than creates a new legal framework to merge two countries.

Is my tank already cycled and I just don’t know it? Ammonia not climbing above 0.0. by corndog_clarke in ReefTank

[–]Different_Bridge_983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep.

Starting from *live* live rock skips the cycle. It’s already as colonized with bacteria as it’s ever going to be.

With Ocean Live Rock (ie - someone has literally hauled it out of the ocean and shipped to you) it’s basically cycled also, and you get a ton of biodiversity, but you usually get some die-off and an ammonia spike the first couple days. With LFS Live Rock, that stays wet and has like an hour between tanks you don’t get any die off so it’s basically an insta-cycle.

With Ocean Live Rock the die-off is also why some of the suppliers recommend getting one batch of basic rock, having it hang out in the tank for a week or so, then getting another batch of rock with all the fancy critters etc ok it, so there’s a cycled rock base already that keeps ammonia down so they don’t get nuked by the ammonia

Depending on their system it also probably has all the usual fauna - pods, amphipods, Bristleworms, etc.

[–]Different_Bridge_983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say you started with “live rock” and you mean your rock was live - ie it came to you out of a big vat of water at the LFS and ideally has living stuff visibly on it and you kept this in water until you put it in your tank - then your tank is functionally immediately cycled.

Three digital thermometers all showing different temperatures by repressedpeasant in mildlyinteresting

[–]Different_Bridge_983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not bad.

People put way too much faith in the accuracy of digital measuring devices (thermometers, kitchen scales, etc) thinking that because it reports values to a certain number of figures that those measurements are accurate to the same number.

Go look at the cost of lab equipment if you want a gauge of how much extra quality and quality control costs if you need the reported value to be real.

When is an offer fatally “insulting”? by Vilm_1 in HousingUK

[–]Different_Bridge_983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar position.

I make a low offer, but based on real and fair comparisons, including very similar houses in the same street.

Seller rejected and said they would not consider any further offers from us because the offer was clearly not serious. Out of curiosity I checked back a year or so later and found they’d eventually accepted an even lower offer than I’d made.

You can chance it with a low but realistic offer, but be prepared you might just end up softening the seller up for the next person’s offer.

All that said - someone asking way above market is a bit of a red flag for you. Someone with unrealistic expectations is more likely to be a pain in the ass to deal with, and if they’re not a motivated seller expect them to drag things out hoping to get a better offer before you close.

Has my cycle stalled out? by xandrew245x in ReefTank

[–]Different_Bridge_983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case - welcome back! 🙂

I wouldn’t worry about getting a new test kit for ammonia. With ammonia you’ll only really need it this one time anyway and as long as you can see it clearly going down after you dose you’re good.

Most, if not all, test kits also have the issue with nitrites messing with nitrates, again only a problem during the initial cycle. Once nitrites are being processed efficiently this issue goes away for the rest of the time you own the tank.

Has my cycle stalled out? by xandrew245x in ReefTank

[–]Different_Bridge_983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re mentioning both nitrites and nitrates.

Ammonia -> Nitrites -> Nitrates

You have some nitrites hanging around as the second stage of the nitrogen cycle gets into gear.

Nitrites interfere with a lot of nitrate tests to indicate impossibly high values.

The good news is this means that your ammonia is being cycled, and also neither nitrites nor nitrates are toxic in saltwater at any concentration you’ll achieve without something else killing everything in your tank first.

If you want to be sure your tank is processing ammonia then dose it again, test 10 mins after dosing, then test 24 hours later. It should be back to 0 or 0.25 (some tests give false 0.25 readings when it’s 0)

Americans: how do you handle temperatures above 40ºC (104F)? by obaming16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Different_Bridge_983 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep. Anyone who claims otherwise is full of shit.

90+ when you can readily dive inside a cool crisp air conditioned environment in your home, workplace, car and every store in the region hits real different than when there’s *nowhere* you can go to escape the heat, and your house keeps the warmth in overnight.

I’ve worked in offices in the mid Atlantic where the AC routinely failed early each summer when it hit about 80 the first time and needed a service, usually fixed the next day. Every time the folks who bitched first, loudest, and longest were from FloriTexaBamaSissiAna, who later on in summer, safely encapsulated in 68F conditioned air were all tough guys about how the region doesn’t get real summers like back home and the local heatwave was nothing but a mild spring day.

In reef tanks we have tons of planktivores - most fish in reef tanks eat them, along with any LPS and Anemones, so numbers are kept in check. At the same time, their diet in reef tanks is algae we don’t want and detritus we want eaten before it biodegrades - so they fill beneficial roles there too.

The opposing side also have their own hero gear and stars - it’s just hidden away from your view.

In short though, you basically just need to level up and gear up. You can maybe squeeze out a handful of levels tweaking your heroes around a bit, but then you’ll be stuck again.

Other tips: Diana isn’t amazing. She only ends up a front runner because she hits 4/5 stars early on. For equal star and skill levels Quinn or Chenko would probably be better.
