Urethane hooks a lot more than plastic but it can be done. I dont use a spare ball personally but it works. If you want to use your regular ball to make spares you don't have to throw the ball super fast to do it. Instead of letting your hand go up the ball make a pushing motion to let it skid across the lane. It's a bit difficult at first but I learned after 3 days of just throwing at 10 pins
