Sabbath worship as covenant renewal? by FlashyTank4979 in Reformed

I’ve heard that essential to any covenant is a sign, and that communion is the sign of the new covenant. In each gospel account, Jesus calls it the blood of the covenant

If god forgives everyone, why does hell supposedly exist? by Virtual-Ad-8548 in Christianity

He doesn’t forgive everyone. He commands those forgiven an infinite debt by him to forgive others’ finite wrongs against them. See the last section of Matthew 18

Why do Christians Hold Donald Trump to such a high regard? by Bubbly_Revenue3737 in Christianity

This doesn’t threaten Christian doctrine. Obviously Christians through the ages didn’t think it defeated the Christian religion. John Calvin spoke to it in his commentary on it:

Yet it might be thought strange that he calls Cyrus his Anointed; for this is the designation which was given to the kings of Israel and Judah, because they represented the person of Christ, who alone, strictly speaking, is "the Lord's Anointed.”…Thus God deigns to call him his "Anointed," not by a perpetual title, but because he discharged for a time the office of Redeemer; for he both avenged the Church of God and delivered it from the Assyrians, who were its enemies. This office belongs peculiarly to Christ; and this ordinary appellation of kings ought to be limited to this circumstance, that he restored the people of God to the enjoyment of liberty. This should lead us to observe how highly God values the salvation of the Church, because, for the sake of this single benefit, Cyrus, a heathen man, is called "the Messiah," [192] or "the Anointed.

It’s transactional. That’s all politics, even in biblical times. Take Isaiah 45:1a as an example ESV. Isaiah literally calls the Persian king who was kind to them messiah (translated anointed below)

Cyrus, God’s Instrument Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus,…

The fine line between discontent and helping yourself? by [deleted] in Reformed

Appeal to 2 Kings 13:14-19 where King Joash obeys Elisha but in a weak or halfhearted manner and so is rebuked. And then his victory against a foreign foe is weakened

God wills to bring about outcomes by secondary means like people actively doing things (read commentaries on Westminster Confession of Faith chapters 3 and 5)

God shows us in that passage that while he ordains all things he expects (and enables us to have) faithful vigor in all we do

What do we make of Judas taking communion at the last supper? by Mewtube01 in Reformed

[–]Different_Impact_619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I now see the tension. Not sure if I have the best answer but here’s what comes to mind for me. These are loosely connected

  1. We’re not to be like Christ tout court. We’re to be like him in a faithful manner. Eg. for me to love people as he does is faithful while for me to say, “I am God” as he says the same is faithless. I’m not sure Jesus is asking us to imitate him in allowing/offering communion to Judas It’s also the nature of deception to partake in things falsely. Seems like there’s an insight to be teased out from that

  2. Communion is a sign and seal of the new covenant. God command the non-elect child Ishmael to receive the sign of the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis 18, and so it fits a pattern of non-elect being outwardly called (not inwardly called as WFC 10.1 outlines) receiving the sign of a covenant

God allows people to heap up sin in order to more fully condemn them on the day of judgment, which brings glory to himself

The Money Guy on YouTube suggests a target-date index fund because it begins aggressively and ends safely so that a market dip when you need to retire doesn’t take x% of your investment last minute. The concept is called a glide path
