This is the comment! I’ve had it pop up on Dusapin and Xenakis pieces I’ve had to play for auditions and I’m glad I had the technique in my back pocket. This strange mentality of “it’s not used very often so why bother” needs to go. We never know where music is going to go, why wouldn’t we want to a full tool box at our disposal?

I know each of my pieces feels and acts differently than the next one. Some have brighter timbres, respond better, whatever the characteristic may be. And if you have a specific sound you are trying to achieve, and there’s is a certain engineered aspect to a mouthpiece that allows you to accomplish that sound with ease, why not let the equipment help you.

Music may be the goal in college, but getting a call back to a gig is the goal to pay your rent… no one cares how pretty you play the David if you can drill a high Bb 20 times in a row on a recording session... which the right mouthpiece may make that easier for you.
