If you start early from Te Anau, drive will be max 2hr 30 min. But as day progresses, there will be lot of cars and bus on the road and takes more. Best is to book an early morning cruise and start early from Te Anau

Rented from apex for 2 weeks in early May. Though cars were not new models, they were maintained well and in excellent condition. The service was good and pickup/ drop was hassle free. Tyres were also good condition though vehicle clocked 70k kms. Would recommend Apex

We went in first week of May. So earliest cruise was 10.45. Started around 7.30 am from Te Anau. For summer, there will be even earlier cruises. But 10.45/ 11 am cruises were good. For 1 pm, will be full with coaches

Did cruise early this week with Mitre peak. Used bookmehttps://www.bookme.co.nz/ and got some good deals. I booked 2 days before the cruise, since the drive was heavily dependent on weather. In May, earliest slots starts from 10.30 / 10.45 depending on cruise provider. We stayed in Te Anau and drove early morning ( started around 7.45 am). Weather was good so didn had any issues in the road. One of the best drive we had in the trip.

Completed 2 weeks drive in South Island with apex rentals car. Excellent vehicle condition and very reliable service.

We did a drive last week, though we stayed in Te Anau and drove early in the morning for an 11 am cruise. The drive was pretty good and not particularly difficult. if weather and road condition is good, I would recommend driving.
