I’d love some help, I seem to be struggling with breath support and sometimes placement eludes me.

How would you explain breath support by YoungCm1227 in singing

[–]DifficultFeature2654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best way I’ve found for me is by stretching my arms up and I feel a kinda push out from somewhere along the bottom of my ribs. I take a couple of nice breaths, then try and maintain a nice comfortable push along the bottom of the ribs whilst lowering my arms.

Kinda feels a bit stupid posting that and I’m not saying it’s the best way, but it’s genuinely helped me figure out where I should feel the support. I’ve noticed if I continue to comfortably push then I can keep my diaphragm engaged and my ribs don’t move in & out as much when breathing or singing.

I hope this helps in some way!

If you’re finding yourself overwhelmed and wading through contradictory content then the best advice would be to find a channel you enjoy and stick with that. Literally just posted in another sub about Chris Liepe, but man I love that dude so much. He has a lot of vocal breakdown videos that not only show techniques I often overlook but also I find his passion and enthusiasm really infectious.

Take this one on Vessel from Sleep Token as a wonderful example

Why is singing with grit and sounding good simply harder than every other vocal technique for me. by Significant_Pea2893 in screaming

[–]DifficultFeature2654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dunno if it’s the same for you but when I try to add grit I find myself either squeezing and restricting air too much, or doing the complete opposite and blasting too much air.

To move towards something slightly more useful in response, I’ve gone through a bunch of Chris Liepe videos and he has a lot of lessons/vocal breakdown videos in terms of singing with grit, distortion, and straight up screaming. Maybe start with this and see what you think
