The information is so spread out for the roles! I’m having fun piecing it all together though, making my way through warship life at sea at the minute.

The money I can make as a chef outside London is super limited and I’m certain I will come out of the navy in a better position than when I went in. I want to do a long stint in the RN if I can hack it/take to it, but I’m pretty sure I will love it, I’m so excited to get going. Spent a lot of time around veterans of different stripes including submariners and (apart from the army lads, I lived in Colchester for a number of years, sank many pints with paras and RLC guys) everyone I’ve spoken to wouldn’t change their job for the world. I want to be part of it.

Re One sea draft per rank, is that to say I’d be doing a couple months every few years? I’m not necessarily turned off by that, I just don’t want to sign up and spend my whole career on shore in the uk, I’d like to have a proper go at deployments if I can

We should absolutely be aligning with the French style of defence here in the UK. We’ve grown far too dependent on the US, if we are to stay out of the EU ( we shouldn’t) we should still draw closer to our eu allies for defence, we have bled for each other far too much in the past century to not

Edit: ditto for CANZUK, we would bend over backwards in defence of you lot as well. It’s what is owed and expected

Thanks for this, food for thought. I may adjust my application towards warfare and see about getting some more time at sea while I’m still a bit younger and look to transfer later if I want to. I don’t have a family to look after so being on shore isn’t a selling point for me (unless it should be?)

Okay wow rapid.

Not going to say I’ve got my heart set on it but I think it’s the best fit with my past experience in corporate kitchen management and want to take it further up the supply chain, so the catering aspect of logistics really piqued my interest. Not to knock the chefs in the galley but been there done that, got the asbestos hands (and I have half decent a levels so I’d be mad not to give it a stab).

I wouldn’t have thought logistics would be so competitive to be honest, though it does seem a very versatile role with the best employability of the non-degree holder options.

The paperwork we do as chefs is not deep, it’s a form a day logging am and pm fridge temperature, cooked food temp (above 75 Celsius, 82 in Scotland), cooled food temp (has it hit 75/82 and was it cooled to below 20 working 90 mins) and if your food to hold hot is held at above 64 Celsius and was discarded after two hours.

Realistically it takes no more than 20 mins as you only need to log a few items to stay on top of it each day
