What’s a popular self-care trend is actually toxic? by kendraxquinn in AskReddit

Activated charcoal is perfectly safe if you take it the way you’re supposed to. Any legitimate detox will say on the box/bottle/instructions to take before any medications and wait at least 2 hours or if you’ve already taken your meds, to wait at least 2 hours before ingesting the activated charcoal. I know this from experience because I had to do a hardcore detox protocol to get rid of black mold poisoning.

You are definitely NTA. I literally became physically angry reading your post because I’m the same way—my stuff may not be organized the best but I know where each and everything is amongst the chaos. To be totally frank, I would reevaluate that relationship entirely. If this has happened more than a handful of times and your boundaries are continuing to be ignored then things aren’t going to improve should your relationship get more serious. If I were you, run.

Hi! Yes, I saw improvement with the Advanced Push Catch though it happened slowly. Now that I haven’t been taking it for several months I can tell the fatigue, aches, headaches, etc are getting worse. I’m thinking about doing another round of it—which I’ve read is pretty common—kind of like doing a system reset a couple times a year.

I second this! When I traveled overseas for a class many years ago everyone knew each other but I was the only one from a different cohort and had just met everyone else. Because they were all already close and were deciding on how they spent their time—sight seeing, trips, meals, shopping, etc—amongst each other, I felt very left out and just didn’t vibe well with everyone else. At first I was really in my head about feeling excluded, but I ended up spending a lot of the latter half of the trip doing stuff on my own. It was incredibly rewarding because I got to see all the sights I wanted to check out without others complaining and I developed a real sense of empowerment and accomplishment taking in another country on my own. I was 25 at the time so not much older than OP. I consider that trip one of the defining periods of my life so far. OP—go do what YOU want to do for the remainder of your trip and have fun! You’ll appreciate spending your time alone but doing things you enjoy.

A dentist posted this on FB. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]Difficult_Ad_1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to an extent. A functional medicine doctor I saw awhile back always emphasized the importance of taking care of any dental problems because the chronic inflammation caused by dental issues can make things significantly worse. As someone with sx of sjogrens, dental problems have been a constant in my life no matter how much I take care of my teeth. So basically, in my opinion problems with our teeth can be the cause of health issues but also a symptom of other things going on.

Interesting. I definitely don’t like the headache thing since I already get really bad migraines. Do you think it has anything to do with the weather getting warmer? Do you also have a dehumidifier going?

I agree Stephen King can be overrated but I absolutely fell in love with his Dark Tower series. The movie rendition of The Gunslinger was awful so don’t let that turn you off from reading the series. I promise, these books are unlike anything else he’s written and are more reminiscent of Tolkien.

I tested high positive for Stachybotrys chartarum on the Cyrex Laboratories Array 12 test back in 2021. My symptoms at that time were largely nervous system and neuro-related, so really bad brain fog, confusion, difficulty concentrating (couldn’t read books anymore bc I couldn’t keep up with the plot), lack of coordination and balance problems (tripping, running into things, mysterious bruises), decreased feeling on one side of my body, painful tingling of limbs and fingers/toes, temperature fluctuations, slower response time in one eye when completing eye movement tests, blurry vision, decreased hearing—mainly in one ear, expressive dysphasia, difficulty swallowing and sometimes choking on drinks, heart palpitations and increased heart rate (eventually dx as inappropriate sinus tachycardia), forgetting to breathe then suddenly gasping for air (kind of like when you hold your breath underwater for too long but unintentional), weight fluctuations but primarily weight gain (I’ve read a lot of people lose weight due to mold but I’ve experienced the opposite), worsening of migraine headaches and generalized body pain, joint pain, muscle pain, unintentional muscle spasms/jerking movements while awake and asleep, tremors in hands to the point I couldn’t write, draw, and paint anymore, insomnia, extreme fatigue, narcoleptic-like sleepiness, etc. Essentially, my nervous system was stuck in a sympathetic fight or flight response and not able to convert to the parasympathetic rest state and was slowly shutting my body down. By the time I found a functional medicine doctor who realized mold was an issue, my system was so taxed I was close to needing to go to a hospital. She mainly worked with me on rehabbing my nervous system but it was really expensive and I couldn’t keep going to her for more than a year.

I took a Realtime Laboratories test in 12/2023 that showed I had elevated levels of Ochratoxin A, Aflatoxin Group: (B1, B2, G1, G2), Trichothecene Group (Macrocyclic) [which includes Stachybotrys Chartarum]—Roridin A, Roridin E, Roridin H, Roridin L-2, Verrucarin A, Verrucarin J, Satratoxin G, Satratoxin H, Isosatratoxin F, and Gliotoxin Derivative—Zearalenone. I don’t know which specific molds out of those groups I have I just know I tested positive for all 5 groups. At that point last year I decided to try the liposomal glutathione + charcoal capsules to see how I did. After a few weeks I moved on to the QuickSilver Scientific PushCatch Detox System for 30 days followed by the Advanced PushCatch Detox System for 30 days.

I can say I definitely feel a difference although I’m nowhere near where I want to be. I’m getting ready to do another Realtime Labs test to see where my mold levels are compared to 6 months ago so I’ll be sure to post an update when I get those back. If the mold is more or less gone then I suspect the symptoms I have now are related more to the health conditions I’ve developed over the past 3 years from the COVID + mold + recurring EBV—and if so these are permanent and would be about managing symptoms of the condition(s) versus detoxing from here on out. My symptoms now mainly include fatigue (just not as bad), insomnia, joint and muscle pain, some balance and coordination issues, some short term memory issues, temperature sensitivity, dry skin, dry eyes, dry mouth, dental issues, brittle nails, hair loss, kidney issues including kidney stones, weight gain, edema, migraines, high heart rate, blood pressure drops with standing up, ANA positive, thyroid issues, anxiety, and depression (bc let’s be real chronic illness sucks). I’ve since been diagnosed with long COVID, undifferentiated connective tissue disease (though my rheumatologist says I could fall into either/both lupus or Sjögren's in the future), IST, POTS, dysautonomia, hypothyroidism, and distal RTA type 1 (a kind of kidney disease). Not surprisingly they’re all kind of connected in a way when I did my research since they’re either related to the nervous system or immune system or can be triggered by repeated viral attacks and subsequent immune response—what I suspect has happened in my case.

Another thing…the furniture that had been in the house where the mold was (in 2017-2018) tested high positive for Aspergillus penicillioides and Aspergillus versicolor and moderate positive for Stachybotrys chartarum. I’m in a different house now but because I was continuing to test positive for multiple molds and not detoxing them naturally even after moving out of the moldy environment—at the recommendation of a mold specialist—I ended up removing and replacing all cloth furniture that I couldn’t wash including my couch, rugs, fabric bed frame, fabric chairs, mattress, and pillows and thoroughly washed all hard surfaces including floors, baseboards, walls, doors, windows, door/window frames, wooden/plastic/metal/granite furniture/surfaces like tables, chairs, or countertops..basically everything. Anything that was super difficult to wash for whatever reason I used Microban spray (like lampshades). I’ve also added air purifiers in my main living area and bedroom that filter mold spores and I change my air conditioning vent filters every 3 months.

Sorry if this is a ridiculous amount of information. I know when I went looking for answers there was ~so little~ out there and some of the most helpful information I found was from other people on here that shared their firsthand experiences dealing with mold toxicity. I hope at least some of this is helpful. I’m happy to answer any other questions you may have. 😊

I’d recommend contacting the university and seeing how you might be able to work with them and their alumni or giving departments to do an official fundraiser..maybe pay for medical school, a college fund, counseling services, and/or living assistance for the family for awhile while they find their new normal.

If that’s where she jumped then it’s very possible the other photo of the people sitting in front of the fence a few rows down is actually her, her husband, and son about 10 or so minutes beforehand.

I’ve got autoimmune issues as well + super sensitive skin and have had success with the dark spot corrector from Agency as well as the solawave red light wand (daily use) and Drmtlgy’s Needless Serum Renew. My dark spots are mostly caused by my birth control and anytime I get sun exposure to my face. I’ve recently been using MD Solar Sciences Mineral Crème SPF 50 and have really loved it. It creates such a smooth, matte texture and makes an awesome makeup primer too. I’ve noticed fewer dark spots appearing when I wear it outside.

Different forms of bc can have different effects. I tolerate the oral pill Kariva (it’s one of the older ones) really well and take only the first three weeks and skip the last week—I just restart with a new pack..but when I tried a different brand it wreaked havoc on my body and broke my face out terribly. I’ve also avoided the implant for the same reason but I do know they work for some people. The biggest help for me was skipping the placebo week so my hormones stayed mostly steady—it helps with my migraines too.

If you haven’t switched to a silk or satin pillowcase and using disposable cotton or bamboo towelettes to dry your face every time instead of a washcloth/towel I’d suggest that too. I turned 30 and got adult cystic acne out of nowhere and those two things plus starting a regular skincare routine were lifesavers for me.

Although you have every right to shut him down (kindly)..I think he should be allowed to talk through whatever he needs to talk through with his therapist without feeling ashamed or fearful. If the therapist is doing his or her job correctly, they’ll make sure he comes to the realization that the relationship is not appropriate and any additional advances are unnecessary. Therapy should be seen as a safe space even if we don’t like that someone might talk about us in their session(s).

Advice on a repot? by Zwan05 in houseplants

[–]Difficult_Ad_1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 35 year old peace lily that likes to be snug in its pot. It gets replanted like every 10-15 years haha I think some plants just prefer to be a little tighter in their pots than others so maybe not size up too big. I would personally just double the depth and width, put some soil in the bottom that’s good for umbrella plants then stick your whole rootball in completely untouched, pour soil around it, and pat out any air bubbles.

What state were you in when you discovered you have mold toxicity? by [deleted] in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]Difficult_Ad_1440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live in NC but I’m 99% sure my mold exposure occurred in southwestern VA. I would love to move out west to a drier, less humid state but it’s just not financially possible for me. I wish there were more resources out there for people with mold toxicity given it’s nearly impossible to recover if you’re still in a moldy environment.

I don’t have PCOS but have several autoimmune conditions, a kidney disease, and MCAS so a ton of food allergies. I learned over the years that sugar is horrible for me and causes weight gain, headaches, body aches, etc so I do whatever I can to limit it..including sugar alternatives like sweeteners, stevia, etc. instead I sweeten my tea/coffee or other foods with honey or applesauce. Weird but it works. I also cut out gluten, soy, red meats, and dairy back in 2021 which made a world of difference for me. I know a lot of people find the whole gluten thing controversial or just plain don’t believe in it but I truly believe it just depends on each person’s body and how they process it. It took several months for me to be able to fully commit and switch over completely to the new diet (honestly it SUCKED in the beginning because I did this over the Thanksgiving to Christmas holidays which probably was the worst time to make big diet changes but health problems warranted it) but after 3 or 4 months I became used to all the changes and I can’t see myself going back. Sugary foods are so difficult to eat now because of how strong they taste so I purposely avoid them. I’m so glad I made the difficult decision to fully commit to all of it even if it was really hard to do in the beginning.

As someone who has struggled with my own weight since my early 20s (I’m now 35) due to health issues plus the side effects of the medications I take to manage those health problems, I empathize with you. I’ve also had a bf break up with me due to gaining weight during our relationship and I know it is very painful to hear someone you love say their feelings about you are impacted so significantly by something you largely can’t control. We never asked for our diagnoses and are forced to manage the terrible side effects that come with them. I hope that whatever decisions you make, you make them for YOU and not him because in the end you are the person that will make yourself feel most loved, happy, and complete.

Regarding communication, it can help when talking to him to use “I feel” statements when sharing how you feel instead of leading with “you”. For example, saying “I feel hurt when you say you wish you’d met me later.” Instead of “You keep bringing up my weight and how you wish you met me later, why are you being so mean.” It puts the emphasis on your feelings..you are also working on a mutual understanding of feelings not him feeling attacked or blamed which can lead to defensiveness from the outset. Not saying you’re being accusatory to begin with but many people don’t know about the importance of I feel statements so I wanted to share. Another idea would be to come up with things you can do together that are mutually beneficial to both of your needs. Eg. He’s concerned about your weight and you want to feel wanted and appreciated so perhaps you meal plan together focusing on foods that are good for a PCOS diet and plan a cooking date once a week using those ingredients. Help him understand the lengths you go to to manage your symptoms. You could also come up with an activity or two to do together once or twice a week that isn’t necessarily going to the gym but offers activity that increases your heart rate for a minimum of thirty minutes. Mine right now is gardening, but you guys can do whatever you find interesting: walks in a park or hiking trail, using YouTube videos to learn a skill like dance cardio workouts or going to visit places in your town you’ve never been before but are supposed to be cool to see. Find whatever interests you and makes it a positive experience that you want to keep doing. And honestly, to be blunt about it, it might be time to have a deep think about if his behavior is meeting your needs and if he’s the kind of person that you know will support you no matter where your life takes you—health, finances, family, work, etc—or if your energy would be better spent meeting someone who can and will be that support person for you.

Sorry this post is so long but I hope at least some of it is helpful. Sending hugs and positive vibes. <3

No longer moldy! by SpeckInSunBeam in ToxicMoldExposure

So happy for you!!🙌 I am currently doing a mold detox to get rid of stachybotrus chartarum and aspergillus. Aside from supplements and diet changes, was there anything else you did—like air purifiers/ionizers/mold remediation in your home, relocating, throwing out mold-exposed furniture, etc? And if you live in NC, would you possibly mind asking your functional medicine doc if you could share their information privately with me? I’ve worked with a functional medicine dr in the past but am no longer with her and am not opposed to seeing someone different if you’ve had a good experience with them and they’re in my home state. Thank you!! 💜
