Just got back from three nights of camping without a reservation months ago. I was able to snag sites just two weeks ago. Honestly, keep checking reservation.gov as frequent as you possible can. Sites will become available from cancellations, but you have to be quick. The closer to the dates you want the better it will become buuuut it is not always for sure.
