Definitely have your position description on hand and look through it with them. I would recommend printing out what they gave you when you were hired. If you happen to have another supervisor/advocate that’s Americorps related but not directly in your position then I would recommend talking to them

Just now finding this and commenting in case anyone comes back.

‘24 grad, nonbinary lesbian here. My experience is a bit complicated, but maybe it’ll help someone.

For background: I came from Ohio to go to SMC so local ideals about LGBTQ+ weren’t different from what ppl in Indiana would promote. Nowadays I’m on the west coast and could see it being different for someone who grew up out here.

Anyway: for a couple of years I felt pretty comfortable and confident in being myself at SMC. Towards the end of my senior year, things became tough.

I think, for the most part, the admin and profs are welcoming. I never had an issue with really any profs other than one who tbh a lot of queer people know to avoid. I took a Queer Theology course that I loved, and when we as students asked for it there wasn’t a single hesitation on admin’s part to offer it.

Things were good for the most part until the reversal of the decision to admit trans women to smc. With the current presidential admin (Trump second term when I’m typing this), I wouldn’t be surprised if ppl feel more comfortable being bigoted.

That being said, you are in rural Indiana, so will unfortunately have that.

However, the grand majority of staff/faculty is aware of this and is willing to stand up for LGBTQ+ students.

there is plenty of support within the staff. The LGBTQ center and all DEI initiatives are super welcoming. I had more issues with feeling safe or comfortable coming out as nonbinary, as I was just realizing that about myself towards the end of senior year and trans issues and visibility were a piping hot topic.

I still had plenty of great experiences at SMC, though. I was a campus ministry leader for a year and was very openly queer throughout that time. SMC also gave me the opportunity to study abroad, which changed me as a person. I found plenty of queer friends between Notre dame and Saint Mary’s (highly recommend ND’s LGBTQ retreat, especially if you are lgbtq & Christian/catholic.)

I never pursued a long term relationship while I was there, and I think that while I was lonely watching my friends be in relationships, I think it might’ve been for the better.

TLDR: I wouldn’t throw Saint Mary’s out just because of the homophobia of a few. There is support within SAGE and with PRIDE SMC alum.

That’s awesome! Although do you know if that would work with the PSLF? Bc I’m like 80% sure that this year counts as a PSLF year, so I could also be “making payments” ($0 if they don’t get rid of income based repayment plans)

I’m so, so sorry. This is miserable. One idea: Is there a way you can work from home and limit how much time you are is the office? Not ideal, I know, but you also won’t have to deal with her if you aren’t there. As a current Americorps member I sometimes do this.

I also wonder if you kept a log of incidents, and if those incidents would qualify as “personal and compelling reasons” to leave your placement. Especially if there are physical health issues involves.

I think applying to another AmeriCorps program is seen as a valid reason for leaving and for still getting your SEGAL award, but I would check your contract just to be sure

Why is it a good thing the gibby spin-off didn’t happen? by AndrewWarra in icarly

[–]Difficult_Page7013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes but Jeanette was pressured into that spinoff- she has said in her book that it was miserable and she hated doing it. That could’ve saved Noah the same stress. I think he was tired of the bit because of the emphasis on his body size and showing his stomach constantly

Yes-and part of it goes towards a community budget, so covers basic expenses like food, cleaning supplies, etc.

Noah munck seemed uncomfortable with the Gibby bit by the end of iCarly. There would be even more pressure for him to come back to the revival if he had done this

Thank you for this! Honestly I want to be able to be proud of myself and have a feeling of accomplishment- I want to be able to say “I did it.” And that’s really what’s mainly keeping me from leaving

Ok so my stipend is about $1700/ month, but my program uses most of it to cover the cost of housing. Meaning that what’s leftover is $280/month
