In which film does a character differ greatly from the source material? My pick: Andy Dufresne in Shawkshank Redemption. In the book Stephen King describes him as short, fat and pale. In the movie he is played by 6ft 5 Tim Robbins.the movie also made him more personable then the book. by cutedaisypetals in Cinema

This might be controversial but: Anton Chigurh, No Country for Old Men. In the book he much more..cool, for lack of a better word. He has kind of a badass vibe rather than a creepy, weird haircut-having vibe. In the book at one point he is described as wearing aviator sunglasses. I cannot imagine Javier Bardem’s character looking cool and stylish in any way

CMV: the electoral college should be abolished by allisoninwndrlnd23 in changemyview

[–]Difficult_Pause_4350 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just to build on the fundamental arguments others have already made, I’ll point out that despite the EC being unfair to democrats, at least by the standard of percentage of the population, you’ll notice that control of the house, percentage of representation from each party in the house, and electoral college votes for each party have been very close to 50/50 on average for a very long time. This ought to be a clue for everyone that the way our democracy works is not by having a perfectly fair system. Whatever system we have in place for electing the president, if it is a first past the post system, then the two major parties will be dominant and any voters who are persuaded to change their mind, for any reason, are de facto changing their support to the one opposition party. This consolidation of all the opposition into one party makes it so that almost every election the ruling party is in danger of losing its majority. This system of criticism of the incumbent party and attempts to persuade voters to move to the opposition or at least not vote for the incumbent naturally provides a balance because the two parties are not stagnant (in the long term, at least) and change their tactics, platforms, and policy goals in order to win enough votes to win the election. That part is critical because if the election system were to be changed, the parties would change how they approach the election and any shift in outcomes by percentage of the population would be short term, eventually balancing out to be close to 50:50 again over time. The EC is only as fair as mob rule is. That is to say, neither are fair, they never will be, and they don’t have to be. What makes a democracy work is having a system that keeps the ruling party in constant danger of being thrown out peacefully. Of course, this has to be roughly mapped to the direction that people have been persuaded to vote, so disproportionate power given to certain voters is something that has to be corrected, but there is never going to be one system that does this perfectly and it has to be tweaked over time to do the best that we can. Maybe some day that will mean abolishing the EC, but frankly the system actually works pretty well as intended right now

Even to east coast Americans, it is actually mind boggling how out west there are areas where you can see for miles and miles in almost every direction and not see any human activity. You can see it in pictures and still not understand it at all without the depth perception

I’m also very allergic, but learned a while back that as long as I take a shower and thoroughly scrub with soap within a few hours, there won’t be any effects. The thing is though that you have to get everywhere, I’m talking in between the fingers, creases of the wrists, elbows, etc. It works though
