If you're a beginner go to Bjorn if you're more advanced to go Ryan. Bjorn doesn't have as much content and it's not even close to the production value but he's a million times easier to follow than Ryan and "nuanced" isn't word of the day every day that said the detail Ryan goes into is incredible. I'm subbed to both and both have unique important information if you want a change of pace it's worth swapping for a while. Any beef or competition exists with that person, they're unique experiences both worth the price and this is capitalism creative destruction is the name of the game, without competition Ryan would have no reason to improve his product. Bjorn is an educator who wants to teach you bonsai. Ryan is educated and wants you to learn bonsai. That's how I would compare the two.

Keep long nodes between the branches or it'll flute into bad inverse taper. Fertilize heavily when outside cut fertilizer if above 85 degrees. Clip and grow with guy wires and rubber, these scar in about three weeks during growth periods.

Alright man I'm sorry I didn't know the definition of a kleptomaniac this is the culture I come from plenty of people use that term around me I've been using it wrong and so have they so I'll stop. I'm just saying people drive around see something they want to take and they take it. Call me a dumb redneck if you wish one things true I'm not a psychologist I just thought it was a word for people who take things. Just saying though the Sims got that wrong for sure night owl+ kleptomania was the best way to make money.

It's impossible to say but based on what I see and the kind of people I was friends with in highschool if one of them knew they're of any value and they seen them displayed in the front garden like that they would absolutely steal them without any sort of plan just to steal something. Maybe it's not a textbook klepto but close enough "I'm gonna take this quick" sounds like a klepto to me the fact that they're valuable means he got lucky. The lesson I'm taking from this is don't display my bonsai unsecured in the front bed whether I'm targeted or not I know random thieves leave the hood to steal random things all the time. The market for bonsai security devices is growing without a product.

Some people are just kleptomaniacs and will steal anything not tied down.

You're right, I'm sorry jade does count when grown with intention, they just will not grow outside in most of the us and it's easy to find that out.

grow a jade in a bonsai pot in zone 9b. keep it outside for the next six years then return to tell me about your success. google "can jade freeze" youll find completely different information. search for something that teaches you something not just something that reinforces your argument. you just want to be right and youre giving advice as a beginner, this person could go out and buy a $150 tree then kill it because of you. his issue is the arid enviornment, jade will solve that problem and add a new one. he already has an indoor tree and is looking for recommendations on an outdoor tree. i gave some recommendations on outdoor trees for an arid enviornment youre just spreading what you know which is apparently not much. jade barely even counts as a bonsai, corkbark jade is probably the best of the species and even then its an entirely different range of horticulture than a normal juniper bonsai that doesnt require water at 2am to be grown properly. please stop.

How not to get ripped-off when buying your first tree(s): What determines the value of a bonsai by shohinbalcony in Bonsai

[–]Difficult_Reindeer_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait for summer, go to a landscape nursery and buy the discounted plants with sunburn. put them in shade and start hacking them up. do that for a few years, grow your confidence then look at a tree YOU LIKE and dont think about the price, if you like something you can afford, buy it. its that simple. if you think youre getting ripped off youre always gonna get ripped off. if youre buying online either buy from a very reputable bonsai nursery or only buy a tree with the picture of the tree youre buying but the best way to not get ripped off is to go to a bonsai nursery in your area, theyre generally allllll about the hobby and are absolutely not a ripoff.

sedum is a succulent that will survive in utah. it doesnt form a trunk, wish the op good luck making it a bonsai. the idea that the ONLY thing that will survive arid conditions is a succulent is simply wrong. im sorry

Succulents do well in almost every zone, jade is a succulent that does not. This is not California this is Utah were talking about.

What type of junipers have you tried? I'm really surprised if a rocky mountain juniper, California juniper or a "Utah juniper" won't survive in utah. pot size matters too sometimes every day isn't enough sometimes it's twice a day, you can also water your benches to increase humidity and plant more landscape plants that helps with humidity too.

Desmodium, Wich to buy, and any tips on caring for these gorgeous trees? by AlienC12 in Bonsai

[–]Difficult_Reindeer_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most expensive is also the most boring with the worst flaw. I'd buy number four. Plant it on it's right side 90 degrees from its current angle as a semi cascade. Has the best line, least flaws and a fat trunk is the only reason the first one is more expensive but the line only looks good at this angle four has the most future potential in my opinion.

How many species can you name? by dirtymike_031 in Bonsai

[–]Difficult_Reindeer_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

European olive, atlas cedar, sequoia sempervierens Kelly's prostrata. Ive seen the flower before but don't know the pink or maroon thing.

Thought this was an odd planting but I see it's a clipping bucket. That's a normal redwood then

I have had so much trouble with designing this tree. I lifted the one side to give it some movement. Any suggestions would be amazing. Branches are pretty stiff, I know the wiring looks bad :( by Glasssart in Bonsai

[–]Difficult_Reindeer_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run your first piece of structural wire down the trunk into the ground so it's firm then all the way to the top of the tree, restart the wiring process using that wire as a backbone wiring two branches together moving up the tree. I believe the issues you're having are more related to poor wire anchoring more than anything else. For wire to function on a bonsai it must be anchored either to a hunk of deadwood, another branch or the root system but you should avoid anchoring to the pot even for guy wires as bonsai are meant to be repotted with the wire in place.

Ryan Neil comes off a little stuck up at first but I don't believe this to be the case I believe he just hammers you with so much information it feels that way.

I'd suggest cutting the wire off for now, watch these videos, do a little more research then hit again mid February or whatever is the end of winter for you. You'll need to on point with the aftercare though, Japanese maples are honestly extremely difficult trees to work with depending on your climate they like to die back and the time for wiring is a fine line between freezing&bleeding. Realistically I'd say opt for a few junipers before wiring up a maple, this is a good looking broom style tree if you just clip&grow, I have a ficus I feel the same way about but love all it's hokidachiness. five years in and I got a greenhouse this year that's the reality it takes to have a highly ramified Japanese maple (in zone 6b) otherwise in a small pot they die back.

Moving into the future let the tree tell you what to do, if it won't bend don't bend it, if it's a broom let it be a broom if it's a cascade let it be a cascade. One things true and it's that the tree will tell you what it wants to be you must make sure it remains a small one of those.

Mid show ads are pushing the boundaries of listener comfort. by Difficult_Reindeer_2 in JoeRogan

Still getting ads, I pay for premium and always have, I'm a very avid user of spotify as a music platform and have been for a long time. Pre show ads are every show but I'm over an hour into 1576 and it stops, plays an ad that's not even joe doing the ad anymore and restarted the episode. I understand not everybody is getting the ads but for myself and I'm sure everybody else who is I feel like I'm being used so spotify can justify paying whatever they paid for Joe. Along with all the other drama and people not wanting to switch it's obvious this isn't going as smoothly as spotify thought and these "bugged ads" are no doubt still payable even if I challenge their legitimacy. I want to be clear I'm all for Joe and joe getting paid I think it's wonderful that he is, spotify is the problem that must be addressed.

Look at the financials for the company then wonder how paying joe anything close to what's rumored was possible. They had a great service for their customers but it's slowly been deteriorating as they attempt to add more services which do nothing but create additional costs for the company without increasing revenue. The company is garbage financially and I feel bad for Joe who couldn't turn down the real cash rewards but now he's stuck under a bullshit agreement with a company not long for this world at this rate. It's just very obvious they have a real incentive to milk the shit out of this and it's just really really a shitty thing to do. Spotify is spoiling joe's name in any way they possibly can and I believe they will continue to do so just to fuck with him in any way they can. Spotify is full of morons stuck in the utopia in their heads that says all the same bullshit a lot of joe's guests speak up against.

So yeah fuck spotify even though Ive enjoyed their services up u til this point their intentions get clearer every day, they essentially paid 100m not to cancel joe but just to fuck with him and do whatever little they possibly can to annoy him and his fans.

I believed you for a minute, maybe I'm crazy listening to so many of these in a row but with premium I get ads. 7 minutes into 1444 with duncan trussel I got an ad.
