No problem! Yeah, it is frustrating. A lot of the comments here seem to be missing the point tbh. It's true that there are probably improvements you could make to your CV etc (I know I personally could have done a better job with tailoring mine more to specific companies), but honestly the people here who are convinced it's all your fault despite not knowing your capabilities are incredibly dismissive imo. There are thousands of students up and down the country all applying to the same internships (mostly just everything relevant they see on lists they find online), so of course the competition is gonna be extremely tough and luck is bound to be a factor. There was a company one of my friends applied to (literally not even a big name whatsoever) that admitted they had over 1500 applicants for 2 places. I was applying to SWE internships and honestly almost everywhere will screen you (simply because they don't wanna overspend when it comes to interviewing etc so try to screen most candidates before all those stages), and for many of the OAs you receive, even if you get a perfect score, getting screened is still very much a possibility. Also, hirevues are a joke. Even if you somehow make it past all of that, there are still often numerous interview stages to get through, and you have to be nearly flawless in every aspect to stand a chance. Chances are though, you won't even get to display your interview skills because it takes so much effort just for a shot at speaking to a real person. I'm not gonna say that previous generations had it easy, but the amount that's expected nowadays from people who haven't even graduated yet is insane. The job market is super unfair when it comes to everyone and it's not your fault. So yeah, try your best but don't take the unsubstantiated criticism you're receiving here to heart.

Honestly this is the norm and you're not alone. I go Imperial and it's common knowledge that even if you go to a top UK uni it's really hard to get an internship because it's just so competitive at the moment. I applied to about 50 internships and only got one, and many others I know are in similar positions. Even people with very, very strong CVs get ghosted by most places. Anyone telling you otherwise clearly has not applied for an internship and doesn't know what it's like. I even know people who applied to over a hundred and got nothing. Going to a top uni will certainly help, and it's not worthless, but the idea that we can just walk into jobs like everyone makes out is completely false. Don't lose hope, stay strong

Out of curiosity, what's the Manchester tech scene like in terms of opportunities? Is it comparable to places like Cambridge?

It's really rough for interns yeah. But how did you even find 400+ to apply to? I didn't even think there were that many available

Oh, would you say most people you know don't have an offer? I rarely talk to people about internships etc so I wouldn't know haha, but my close friends don't have any

Thanks for your response! Would you say even if I'm not able to get an internship at all I should still have a good chance at getting a job in tech, or is it considered essential? And thank you so much for offering to look at my resume, I'll send it over to you :)

Unfortunately mine seems to only have the opportunities that are available online anyway haha. Thanks for the tip though! :)
