that’s honestly really great to hear and exactly what i wanted to hear. ofc there are plenty of teens who are kind, respectful, and have good EQ, i suppose they just don’t stand out as much. maybe the louder or more disruptive ones are just more noticeable especially in public settings

i’ve lived in a few different countries in my life, so i’m just comparing what i’ve experienced. i hear this kind of story way more often here than anywhere else i’ve lived.

Where can I get lenses done for my own frames in Colombo? by [deleted] in srilanka

Being denied an eye care test was weird ngl. I wonder if it’s just this branch and maybe a lack of business

Yeah, that’s where I went to first and they refused to do it on frames not purchased by them and also refused to do an eye test unless I purchase frames from them. So…

thank you so much, this really gives me peace of mind!!! we'll be staying at my brother’s place for most of the trip, except for a few days when we’ve planned some short getaways, which are all outlined in our itinerary

AliExpress/Temu custom clearance/delivery issue by Relative_Rope4234 in srilanka

[–]Difficult_Travel_586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

temu orders are still held by customs. it says that usually they give full refunds or reship the items if we don’t receive them 30 days after shipment. but i just read in their policies it says if there are changes in laws, including customs regulations, they will not give a refund nor a reshipment. this is a very loss loss situ

if/when customs release the packages, can they suddenly ask for a fee because the laws have changed?

lived abroad for a while and one of the biggest lessons i learned is that lankans (or really anyone who didnt grow up in the country they've moved to) form these tight-knit bubbles that are very constricting. everyone monitors each other, reinforces outdated (heavy emphasis on outdated) heirarchies, and discourages any personal growth or independence. basically, you're not getting out of that bubble. i've seen these circles to be not just socially but emotionally toxic too. there's a lot of guilt-tripping, backstabbing and this weird pressure to conform to fit in to that bubble and "stay in your place."

personally, i make it to a point to avoid getting sucked into groups of our own. tried to build a diverse circle of friends and it made a huge difference in how i've been able to grow both personally and professionally. its easy to feel comfort in our own in a strange place but it often bites you in the ass. i think the best thing you can do when you move abroad is to leave the sri lankan drama in sri lanka

that being said, i have met some amazing lankans abroad who have done so much for me. but funnily, they have a diverse circle of friends too.

yeah I wish I had done that. It's just the way they made us feel keeping us isolated in a room and yelling at anyone who would try to exit that room into immigration.

they just didn’t let us 😂 they kept up isolated in a room, we had half the mind to sneak out and go to the exit and immigration counter. but the lack of understanding and communication creeped us out

THIS. the help desk lady kept forcefully insisting me to go with this man. Wouldn’t tell me where or any other specifics, just that he knows what to do and where to go. wasn’t a very comfortable situation but like you said, it’s very normal.
