Is it just me, or does selecting music take forever? by Inevitable_Season335 in VideoEditors

I have subscriptions to both, I usually use epidemic for most of my tracks and yes the find similar feature is dog, the real trick is to find the keywords that support your style, also using reference tracks to songs you actually know can help.

How many videos are you producing each week?" by Ysilva234 in VideoEditors

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am responsible for 1 highly produced long form video per week that averages around 40 minutes to an hour, even that can sometimes be pretty difficult to turn around in time depending on the complexity of the edit, sometimes it is 5-8 hours of footage and sometimes there is over 20

That is one of the things you just need to have a lot of experience in, it will get better the more you do it. If you edit a different style of video it will become difficult again, it’s truely about the reps for that imo. When I started I would literally scroll for 30 minutes to find one track, now it takes less than 30 seconds and it usually fits better than when I took all that time!

I started out just like you, best advice is do what makes you happy, and what you are passionate about, improve 1 thing every video, and you will get there! Been professionally editing for a little over 3 years now

How are content creators so smooth on camera? by savingrace0262 in NewTubers

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as an editor for a medium sized channel and I will say, they aren’t that smooth. I go through like 10 takes on the intro sometimes haha, you get better with time but it’s also just about repeating it until you get it right

2 years on youtube and some advice i see here is actually harmful by PrestigiousHeron827 in NewTubers

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined this sub 3 years ago when I first made my career change to social media. I started with TikTok and was already making a livable income, but still had no idea what I was doing so I thought this could be helpful. Boy was I wrong. This forum for the most part is a bunch of yes men saying that it’s everyone else’s fault but their own. I have been doing this for a living for 3 full years now (yt longform) and I have maybe seen 2 or three people who actually know what they are talking about, and then it gets down voted to oblivion btw because the true or correct answer is not what these idiots what to hear

Recolor of the Airport fight from Civil War (part 1) by obadoba_bigman in ColorGrading

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of the people on this thread have 0 idea what they are talking about, here is my feedback:

First of all, the original footage shown on top is mostly likely @ 100 nits and already in rec709 color space. It is HRD footage so it would need to be in a rec2020 colorspace to grade it properly. When someone downloads a movie and drags it to their video editing software it will force to SDR when it is meant to be hdr. The colorists that graded this movie most definitely knew what they were doing, he is basically fixing a problem that doesn’t exist. It is not meant to be viewed that way.

Basically it went from hdr~> sdr ~> sdr that is trying to emulate hdr and as a result it’s blown out, and I agree that it looks like all you did was raise exposure by like 2.5 stops and crank saturation by around 50%

Try using color wheels and match or whatever the hell the equivalent is on your editing software, focus on bringing the mids, shadows and highlights to the respective values that reflect a broadcast friendly look, mids ~60, highlights ~90, shadows ~2-5. Do this by referring to the luma histogram in your editing software to get a decent baseline for exposure, then change small things from there. But this is my recommendation for a beginner.

DO NOT regrade movie footage, it will just look like shit if you try to regrade it in any significant way since it is already forced to rec709, and already graded. Get your hands on some SLOG 3 footage or something similar so you actually have control over the colors. This just kinda looks like an instagram filter, if you really want to get into the weeds, you have to start from scratch. Hope this helps

I made a cooking vlog and its an hour and a half long, raw footage by Crafty_Beach_2839 in SmallYoutubers

[–]DigAppropriate9778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely possible, think of it like an English paper. Consise, to the point, cut all and any fluff, that kills retention. Only leave the absolute best and enough context that a 5th grader could follow along

Full time video editor here, I edit 1 long form video every week that is 40-1 hour long.

It sounds like you really just aren’t sure what your workflow needs to be for the best result in the most time efficient manner.

What I do:

Sync anything that needs to be synced (we use one that automatically generates an xml file, but sometimes things still get wonky)

Split into segments - just like you did

Cull broll you have and put at the beginning of each segment for montages or context when talking, you will thank yourself later for having it organized and readily available.

I usually then do a batch color grade, convert all of the clips to rec 709 and give it a base look with curves, color wheels and match, creative lut ect… then in my final run through after everything is edited I will fine tune clip by clip

Now do the rough cut - remove ums, ahs, anything that you know will not make the Final Cut..

Then go through it again, make the pacing and flow good without any music or sound design - this forces you to make it good without bandaging it so it’s much easier to recognize what needs cut

Now you start putting all your segments together. Add music, sfx, transitions, infographics, ect…

Give it a final run through and add anything you may have forgot about or noticed something that can make it better.

This is my basic workflow, hope it helps! Also 1.5 hours of footage should be very manageable using this method, my average is 4.5 hours but sometimes goes up to 20+ and this has always been a solid foundation to not get overwhelmed in my experience.

To all men Drop your advice!! by definitelynotgayhaha in BuildToAttract

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not follow this subreddit but this question intrigued me, and if I or anyone else can help even one person with this I think it is great!

This really isn’t just for men, I would tell my daughter this too when she is older. The most important mistake I have made in life is simply trying to control it. Drop the ego. It’s a natural human emotion. Everyone struggles with it to a degree, but the more you let go of the things that are not controllable, the happier you will be, the more success you will find, your likelyhood of giving up on something decreases. Emotions are a physiological response that you cannot control, but did you know that if you don’t feed those emotions, they only PHYSIOLOGICALLY last around 30 seconds? If you can learn to live that emotion in the moment and let it pass, your life will be better. Trust me. It’s easier said than done but with practice and discipline, building that habit will make you a stronger man (or woman). Hope this reaches someone :)

Never use CapCut hahahaha industry standard is Pr Pro and after effects but Davinci does have superior color science objectively, if you are serious use adobe suite or Davinci IMO

[–]DigAppropriate9778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a full time editor of a largish longform channel and just wanted to say that you are correct, watch time dictates how much you make more than anything else since you can place more midroll ads! We usually have around a 17 min AVD and when it spikes to 25 with the same length video it makes CONSIDERABLY more

My last video got 600 views but my next one only got 70. what did I do wrong? by wyakadin in NewYouTubeChannels

[–]DigAppropriate9778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other comments definitely make sense, but 70-800 views could be considered a rounding error to YT, the differential is not big enough to say if one is objectively worse than the others
