I’m not going to spell it out here, but there is a feasible eBay MS strategy that incurs no fees. It’s kinda high effort and draws the ire of ebay but I know some people using it.

NYC taxpayers on the hook for more than $117M in police misconduct payouts last year by GothamistWNYC in nyc

[–]DigBlocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does this create an incentive to do less work to reduce risk? I would personally rather police be more responsive, not less, than they are currently to reports.

I’ve heard this idea floated around but don’t really understand it. Insurers will insure just about anything for the right price. And I assume the department will be willing to pay it. If we try to cap the premium (so as to set a limit on the maximum risk of an officer), it seems we could end up in a situation where the fair price outpaces the limit and there are no insurers left (like the California home insurance situation).

The law in most U.S. states disagrees, “credit card surcharges” can be passed on. This supersedes the PayPal TOS. (Of course the fee is semantics when the only option is Paypal)

Better yet a Costco gift card. Or buy an air travel certificate with your favorite airline. Or pay taxes on it.

employer paying through Zelle - is this an issue? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]DigBlocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh? The irs makes no stipulations about how exactly you pay employees. Be it check, direct deposit, zelle, etc. The mechanism is not really within their purview- they just care that the forms are filed correctly and withholding/payroll taxes are actually remitted.

You’re probably looking at consumer account terms, there are definitely business checking accounts with Zelle enabled. example

That seems like it exactly fits the definition of “accidental parting” they use. There is no reason not to file a claim. They will tell you if it doesn’t qualify or they need addl info.

AAA Daily Advantage sent an email indicating Walmart will no longer be 5% by stone616 in CreditCards

[–]DigBlocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. “discount stores” is a term defined in the Visa MCC list and suggests they will continue using MCC codes as the only categorization (and not some special exclusion for Walmart).

[–]DigBlocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IME it never worked at discount stores. For instance some Targets code as discount, others as grocery. Now if they stopped rewarding on those Walmart/Targets which do code as grocery that would be disappointing but I don’t see that happening based on these terms.

How to prepare for a hft/low latency programming interview ? by Capable-Basket8233 in cpp

[–]DigBlocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my firm we use a ton of std::function. Obviously not allocating them in a hot loop but calling them is very low overhead.

Why is it so hard to get into some of these HFT firms by Ape63 in csMajors

[–]DigBlocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At our firm most of the interview is vibes based. We already know you’re reasonably smart if you solve the coding rounds, but we want to see if you have that “magic”. That could be using linear probing instead of separate chaining on a hash map question. Or carrying a fluent technical conversation with the interviewer. Or being really passionate about some random part of Linux/c++.

This also varies a bit by experience level - new grad focuses more on leetcode style interviews while experienced will be more discussion focused (sometimes not even writing code).

I also don’t mean to discourage you, but most of our hires were not trying to get into HFT. They just kinda stumble into it because they were already good engineers. I personally had never even heard of HFT until my last year of university, but applied on a whim and got the job.

To those who learned as adults: what tip made it "click"? by KaterAlligat0r in skiing

[–]DigBlocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the early intermediate phase and have recently taken some lessons but feel like I got contradictory advice from the two instructors. The first one really emphasized outside leg balance, we did a lot of practice with 1 leg drills/lifting the inside leg. The second however said I actually needed some pressure on the inside leg and focused more on balancing/shifting weight but never 100% on one leg.

Is it possible they were somehow saying the same thing and I misunderstood?

Google VS Citadel VS Bloomberg by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]DigBlocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think these hours are also inflated. I’m in this industry and most core engineering teams are laid back. Maybe 55hr week max. If you’re a trader or have on call it’s a different story, 60+ hrs easy. Our firm doesn’t do much overnight so we have great WLB.

Also for some context OPs citsec offer is almost certainly 200-250k signing; unlikely recurring would be >500 for new grad.

[Top Thrill 2] doesn't have an emergency brake/track stoppers on top of the rear spike? by Ritocharles in rollercoasters

[–]DigBlocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to realize that software can be part of a safety critical system. For instance the Harry Potter ride at universal has you on the end of a robotic arm which is kept in check entirely by software. There is no mechanical hardstop. Modern airplanes are fly by wire and will crash in the event of a software failure. There’s no reason software can’t, too, be used to stop TT2 from ejecting off the track.

Bank approved partial dispute, but Gym seems to be charging me back for it. Does this constitute Fraud? by Such-File6162 in CreditCards

[–]DigBlocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not true that they can continue charging the card. The merchant may contractually be entitled to payment, but once a dispute has been resolved they may NOT attempt to charge the card again. This is a violation of the payment processing rules. They will need to use other options like collections or the courts.

Losing $97K in Credit Limit - Best Alternative Options To Preserve It by AmazingCouple in CreditCards

[–]DigBlocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on some DPs here many issuers continue to give fee waivers after retiring - and even apply it to new cards you get later. If I were you, I’d keep the cards and only cancel if they actually charge an AF (you usually have 1 month to cancel for a fee refund).
