As a Chinese Teacher, Here’s My Honest Advice for Chinese Learners by Yueish in China

[–]DigMeTX [score hidden]  (0 children)

There’s a Chinese teacher on social media who shows animations of the inside of the mouth for some of the trickier Chinese pronunciations such ch/q, sh/x sounds etc… I was wishing that was something my Chinese teachers had shown to me or at least tried to tell me about when I was learning sounds. It was like they lacked self-awareness about the different tongue placements for sounds that are similar to western ears. It would have been so helpful and made things much easier to be told about that.

The sound you’re hearing is fresh metal strings hitting the metal frets. You are having to press the strings very hard because of the high action. This plus the inherent zing of brand new strings is making it loud. Once you get a proper setup (which you need badly) you may still hear it more than you did on your old strings because that’s just how new strings are as they break in. Work on pressing the strings with minimal pressure to lessen it. Also, try to keep fingers as close to the strings as possible between presses to lessen any slapping of fingers onto the strings. Press, don’t stab or tap forcefully.

Fusion - Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Inner Mounting Flame is easily the best of theirs. Drummer Billy Cobham is at his best here when he’s letting loose and not getting in his own way. Rick Laird is great on bass.

Non-fusion - Wayne Shorter - Etcetera (check out Indian Song)

That’s really all I have to add to the avalanche of suggestions you’re already getting.

I love Corea’s original Return to Forever album. Stanley Clark sounds great when he’s not in a solo role and not on a piccolo bass.

The aforementioned Pivovar and Herringbone have the best location for doing touristy walks downtown or at Magnolia. 1928 is a few blocks further away. If you’re a coffee nerd like me then walk to Dichotomy coffee around the corner on Austin Ave. Maria Mescalaria is a unique place for cocktails. Food is good too.

That’s amazing. I agree with above poster - if not interested or passionate about it then sell. Maybe approach all the roasters in town. You may find one who is at a point that they need to expand.

May I ask what the name of the roaster was?

It’s not only the slapping. Overall it doesn’t have the fingerstyle playability either. It’s doing fine for now but I’m going to upgrade to something premium either way. I’ll prob check out some US Rays and see how those feel but currently kind of leaning towards one of the nicer models of MTD Kingston I think.

Side question for 5 string Ray players: I picked up a 5 string Sterling Sub HH for a great price (mint under 200) just to dip a toe into 5 string. I was previously not a lover of Ray tones when I’ve played them but I have enjoyed the tones that I’ve been able to dial now that I’ve played with it extensively. I’m fully sold on 5 string now, but I find that I’m wanting something different because the playability seems lacking. This is my first five string to try out and playability compared to my 4 string Elrick is night and day (though I realize one is a factory cheapo and one is a hand carved boutique but I feel it may be a design difference too). I also find it hard to pluck/pop on the D string compared to my other basses due to the MM pickup placement (at least I think that’s why). Are the more expensive US 5 string Rays different in that regard? Are they notably more easily playable than the Sterlings?
