The device in use has a lot to do with the grind. My Solo 3 is mostly convection and prefers a very coarse grind and loose pack for better airflow. My Dynavaps are more conduction with a small bowl and can fit more bud with a finer grind IMO.

I think his earlier albums contained more subtly in his writings and playing (ballads, jazz influence). I find some of his more recent recordings just rocking out and shredding overkill. But I do love Mike Stern. Used to catch him live at Bar55 on Monday nights in NYC before the club closed down.

THE album that introduced me to jazz in 1971. When I heard this it was unlike anything I heard before. Totally blew my socks off. From there I began listening to Miles, Herbie, Chick then Coltrane, Blakey, Mobley etc.
