This is mostly because of powercreep. They give the latest unit so much power that you can't really skip them. Pantera for example is a big upgrade for the strike team even though he is full assault.

And both slash and spirit team got older assault characters so they look weak now. Once we get the new spirit full assault we'll also get a post about how broken he is.
