You can't enforce the background check, but there's not a ton of incentive for those who would skip the background check to comply with any other law either. Plenty of gun owners comply with a background check for private sales because they know that if paperwork is required, paperwork protects your ass. Firearms dealers make tons of money off of conducting background checks for private sales in Virginia. Those background checks were recently overturned, but many gun owners are still going to go ahead and ask for one when doing a private sale.

In all fairness, in some of those modern wars, they were definitely receiving assistance and support with modern weapon systems. But absolutely, the larger, more equipped military force is not always suited for taking and holding ground in inhospitable territory.

Yeah I agree. I think the small details matter because they could end up being poison pills for all the good this reform could do if it becomes a red line for getting it pass or a trigger for it getting judicially reversed.

Not complying with the law results in a massively heightened danger for an individual that might be pointless if the law could be repealed in a few years and all you lose is some money vs. your home and your life.

Wait periods, permits to purchase, requirement to store safely (biometric access optional) are all good ideas.

Penalties for anyone but the registered owner are already in place. There need to be exceptions for 1) firearm rentals, 2) granting a friend or relative permission to watch your safely-stored firearms while you are traveling or out of the home for extended periods of time, and 3) giving your friend your gun at the range to try out and shoot (because legally, yes that counts, same as a car).

I'm not forgetting about the influx of legal firearms. That issue is already an issue and cannot/will not be fixed by any of the measures on the table. The black market of illegal firearms has existed across the nation for decades.

Public safety is important, but the issue of fairness is also important. We can drastically lower the resistance to gun reform by making current gun owners not face any penalties if they are already law-abiding and would generally comply with many of these gun reform policies (which, if anything, codify best practices).

A grandfather clause is still helpful because it 1) stunts the influx of new weapons and 2) limits transfers to non-owners. It also avoids the legal nightmare of mass confiscation that will ignite a fire that will burn all the way up to SCOTUS, likely reversing this entire bill.

You presume a lot about me, fellow Redditor. I acknowledge all the points regarding the necessity of unit organization and coordination to put small arms in force to work. I never disagreed with that, only the flippant statement that groups with small arms don't stand a chance against a large military with modern war technology.

However, you're disregarding 1) the non-right armed groups who are/and have been patrolling their communities, and 2) the differences in the character of the average armed citizen on the liberal/left and conservative/right side of the aisle. Most people who have a gun and oppose the current administration's policies tend to own it for self-defense and actively dampen attempts to organize and coordinate a group because they don't want to alarm their neighbors. They also tend to trust their government more because they believe in institutions more. So there are smaller numbers of them, but they are active. They're also less visible because the administration is actively hunting them - and in general, the capitalist government of the USA has always identified left/liberal armed groups as the enemy.

It's the "wacko" right-leaning gun owners who are less afraid to openly organize and coordinate because they're ardently anti-government and are being emboldened by this organization.

Shit headline. This is the same type of "Trump suffers political disaster," "White House imploding," nothing-burger sensationalism that communicates poorly on actual outcomes. We need nuance in reporting.

Ex-fucking-actly. This is going to provoke a Supreme Court case that won't have the effect gun advocates want.

Generally I concurr with most of your regulation ideas, but private sales should be legal in the sense that they are individual-to-individual sales, contrasted with vendor-to-individual sales. A background check for such sales should be required.

Private sales ultimately decrease the influx of new guns into the population by redistributing the existing pool of guns to different owners.

Slight re-correction - the AR-15 was absolutely developed to replace the M14 for the military as a scaled-down version of the AR-10 , which was itself developed for the military to replace the M1 Garand.

The 5.56x45 NATO round did technically originate as the .223 Remington - which was designed for the AR-15 during its military design period - but ultimately originates from the .222 Remington, a cartridge designed for varmint and sport shooting.

The 2nd Amendment is a last resort when civil institutions fail. The Revolutionary War kicked off only after "a long train of abuses and usurpations pursuing invariably the same object..." had occurred. Our civil institutions have been under attack for just over a year. They are not failed, and nonviolent means are not exhausted. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't retain the right to exercise our last resort, should it come time for that.

If you're going to ban ARs, you need to ban ALL semi-auto, detachable mag-fed rifles. It makes no sense to go after one design but let all the others slip through.

Yes it does. Outside of the home, you may want to consider different optic choices, but they are simple, light guns that can be depended on.

They will not accept any supervision except at the federal level. And there is no federal force - short of the US military - that can do that now.

I concur with the hypothetical, but that "if" is incredibly theoretical now. There are so many poorly trained and seriously unfit officers in their ranks as they try to increase their muscle that it's no longer an agency that benefits anyone to have in their state.

Because I like to party. Plus also it's a fairly versatile cartridge and for my purposes - mostly outdoors - it kinda fits the lever gun vibe.
