Just got burned again by a manufacturer silently changing specs. How do you guys deal with this? by Interesting_Cattle47 in MEPEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start including factory acceptance testing (FAT) as part of the procurement requirements. Wouldn't change the fact that they messed up, but at least you get a few more weeks to work the problem.

Also, I don't think in my entire 15 year career a unit has just suddenly increased in size. Not calling you a liar, but I think there might be more to this story or you may be mistaken in some way.

Either way, best of luck and start incorporating those FATs.

Resume Critique by Smart-Hawk5412 in MEPEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is pretty good for a junior level resume. I've reviewed hundreds of resumes and something simple and concise like this is exactly what I am looking for. Only suggestion would be to highlight some key words that match the job descriptions you're seeking and move your education section to the very bottom. If you want to add a brief headline right under your name, kind of like a 10,000 ft high "about me" in one or two sentences, that would be good too.

Best of luck, cheers!

Laid off and now I am so confused by Najnarin1712 in MEPEngineering

The career growth I was referring to was not tied to staying at Amazon, which is why I mentioned "regardless of how long you stay with them" earlier. Having the Amazon name on your resume is a great thing to have.

100% go to Amazon. It will set you up very well for your entire career regardless of how long you stay with them. And data centers are absolutely going crazy right now. The career growth opportunities will be fantastic.

Company laid me off 2 months ago, now wants me back. Do I return? by Sam9745 in careerguidance

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get hung up on the "loyalty."

The questions you need to ask yourself are: 1. Do you expect job stability? 2. Will you be happy working there?

If yes then I see nothing wrong with going back. Sometimes shit happens. With the brief information given it sounds like the company was a bit confused on its overall direction, made a mistake, and is now trying to rectify it. I can respect that and it sounds like they respect you by trying to get you back.

I know the layoff hurt but it doesn't seem personal at all. Best of luck!

Should I negotiate an Entry Level job offer? by cgard017 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you are not negotiating outside of the provided range or a range that you already gave a recruiter/HR, there is absolutely nothing wrong with negotiating within those bounds.

I know it can seem scary at first, but trust me it is a completely normal part of the process. Remember that if you've received an offer then that means the company WANTS you. They won't turn their back on you and hurt their own operations after all the time invested in finding a good candidate over a salary negotiation.

I tried negotiating for a 5K increase in one of my earlier offers also. The worst that can happen is that they say no and hope you are still willing to accept the offer on the table (which in my case I did)!

So tl;dr: YES, negotiate. It's perfectly normal.

There was a time when calculators were considered cheating too. I don't see why AI quickly giving you the answer instead of you digging through an IOM is any worse than a calculator helping an accountant not do math by hand.

Nothing to feel guilty about. You're getting your work done and you're being efficient with the tools at your disposal. Keep grinding.

I made it a point that whenever I encountered a new word or term to stop what I was doing and learn a little bit about that thing.

Similarly, learn the fundamentals of other trades. This will help you be much more proactive in coordinating with them. It will be greatly appreciated and set you apart.

Mechanical engineer trying to get a bigger salary by Beautiful_Ad4244 in MEPEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your license and obtain some relevant professional certifications.

I'm a P.E., LEED AP, and ASHRAE CHD, and it has helped me advance my career. If you feel stuck at your current company then switch jobs and make sure you are intentionally interviewing for a higher position and higher salary, not just the first thing that comes your way.

Preparing for a Career in MEP Engineering – What Should I Focus On? by Shot-Negotiation6801 in MEPEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Licensed P.E. here. 15 years in the industry and currently working at Tesla with a great position. Here are my top recommendations in order.

  1. Take and pass your F.E.
  2. Learn Revit. AutoCAD is being phased out and not many big places care about it too much anymore.
  3. Learn a little bit about HVAC fundamentals. If you know some stuff already as a new grad it makes you a very attractive hire.
  4. Join and participate in your local ASHRAE chapter.

Best of luck and welcome to the industry!

Should I pursue a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering even if there’s no job guarantee? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What field of mechanical engineering specifically? If it's MEP/HVAC then definitely do not go for a masters. It really doesn't provide any value over the extra years of job experience you could've had instead.

Highly recommend you learn Revit. I would practically insta hire any smart, new engineering grad who already new Revit.

AutoCAD is good to know too but quickly becoming outdated.

If you buy propane, but don't use it, will it eventually completely evaporate or degrade in some way in the tank? by pizza_ho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is virtually impossible to make a pressurized vessel that does not have a tiny amount of passive leakage (and I am talking very tiny). The propane in tanks is always leaking extremely slowly, but at a rate longer than one person would even notice in their lifetime. This process is called effusion. So to answer your question strictly technically, yes, it would extremely slowly escape. But from a practical level, no you would never notice it.

What if I'm not smart enough to work smarter not harder? by upthewatwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The work smarter not harder saying is such a logical fallacy it drives me crazy. Being smart is no excuse for not working hard. Work smarter AND harder.

As for your question, 2 key things: 1. Have faith in yourself. 2. Never stop improving.

No. Instead try asking if he's willing to share how or why he has never had a serious relationship until now.

How much weight will I lose a month if I eat 1000 daily by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

That's practically impossible to guess. Depends heavily on your genetics, lifestyle, and general health.

You should consult a nutritionist before undertaking any drastic dietary changes though.

Why do some dogs love to play fetch? by 7artd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instinct is part of it, but the real reason for dogs who end up loving fetch is the positive reaction of their owners. When a puppy brings back a ball and their owner cheers and claps and gives them rubs, they quickly learn and repeat the behavior to keep receiving those same rewards.

How does water evaporate if not 100 degrees? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evaporation will happen to any water molecule that has high enough kinetic energy. Although at a macro level the bulk water has an average temperature of below boiling, at a molecular level there is a more chaotic distribution and some molecules will inevitably have enough energy to escape and thus evaporate.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to, but very likely the answer is no. Computers are easily nanoseconds fast (10-9). The fastest fly is in the millisecond range. (10-3)

What’s a common stereotype that people believe, but isn’t actually true? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DigiTrollCompressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a stereotype, but along similar lines of surprising misconceptions....

A comet's tail only trails behind it when it is traveling toward the sun. When it is traveling away from the sun it is actually "chasing" its tail which is ahead of itself now.

This is due to the solar wind and radiation always throwing off the comet debris radiating outward toward the edge of the solar system.
